Purpose: The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of addition of fiber glass on the physical properties of silanized fiber mesh and non silanized mesh of denture base resins. Methods: The denture base resins were used in this study heat curing acrylic resins(Vertex Rs, Lucitone 199, $20{\times}80mm$) and fiber glass(SES, Green B&D co., Ltd, $20{\times}80mm$) were used as reinforcement. The specimens were stored in distilled water at $37{\pm}2^{\circ}C$ for 72 hours before test. Bending strength and tensile strength were measured by an universal testing machine(Instron 4301, Instron Corp.). Penetration distribution on fiber was observed by scanning electron microscopy(JSM 840A, Jeol Ltd). Results: The bending strength and modulus were increased by 30% after adding fiber glass on denture base resins. Tensile strength showed significant increasing by adding fiber glass on denture base resins. Conclusion: In this study, Addition of silanized fiber in denture base resins were improved physical properties. we confirmed the fiber glass possibility of the replacement about conventional materials.
ZTA tubes were prepared by centrifugal casting and sintered at $1600^{\circ}C$ for 2 hrs. The ZTA tubes were machined into specimens of $3{\times}4{\times}40$ mm. Molten Soda lime glass (SLG) was penetrated into the surface of ZTA at an optimized condition of $1500^{\circ}C$ for the holding time of 5 h and furnace cooled. The extra glass on the surface was removed using a resin bonded diamond wheel. The glass penetrated samples were tested for their flexural strength using four point bend test. Vickers Indentation cracks were made on the glass penetrated surface at different loads of 9.8 N, 49 N, 98 N and 196 N. The residual compression on the surface enhanced the flexural strength and crack arrest behaviour remarkably. This was attributed to the thermoelastic mismatch between the glass and ZTA matrix during cooling.
In this study, adaptation of compomer to saliva contaminated dentin was evaluated with scanning electron microscope(SEM) and confocal laser scanning microscope(CLSM). For the SEM study, the occulusal surfaces of thirty two molar teeth were grounded to exposure dentin surfaces. The specimen were randomly assigned to control and three experimental groups with four samples in each group. In control group, Dyract and F-2000 compomer were bonded on the specimens according to the manufactures direction. Experimental groups were subdivided into three groups. They were contaminated with saliva on dentin surfaces ; Experimental group 1 : Saliva was dried with compressed air. Experimental group 2 : Saliva was rinsed with air-water spray and dried. Experimental group 3 : After polymerization of an adhesive, they were contaminated with saliva, and then saliva was rinsed with air-water spray and dried. Dyract and F-2000 compomer were bonded on saliva-treated dentin surfaces. The interfaces between dentin and compomer were observed with SEM. For the CLSM study, Class V cavities were prepared in buccal and ligual surfacess of thirty two molars. The specimens were divided into control and experimental groups. Class V cavities in experimental group were contaminated with saliva and those surfaces in each experimental groups received the same treatments as for the SEM study. Cavities were applied Prime & Bond 2.1 and F-2000 compomer primer/adhesive that were mixed with fluorescein, and then were filled with Dyract and F-2000 compomer. Specimens were embedded in transparent acrylic resin and sectioned buccolingual1y with diamond wheel saw, and then mounted on cover slide for CLSM study. The interface between cavity and compomer was observed by fluoresence imaging with a CLSM. The results were as follows : 1. In SEM exammination of Dyract group, control group, experimental group 2, 3 showed close adaptation to dentin and hybrid layer of $3{\sim}4{\mu}m$ diameter. Interfacial gap between compomer and dentin in experimental group 1 was wider than in control group. 2. In SEM examination of F-2000 group, adaptation to dentin of control group was closer than Dytact control group, but hybrid-like layer was not observed. Interfacial gap between compomer and dentin in experimental group 1 was wider than in Dyract experimental group 1. 3. In dissolution specimens of Dyract and F-2000 group, resin tags penetrated through dentinal tubules in control group and experimental group 1 and 3, but the penetration of resin tag was irregular and partial in experimental group 1. 4. In CLSM exammination of Dyract and F-2000 group, adhesive patterns of control and experimental groups showed same as in SEM. This result suggests the treatment methods, rinsing & drying, repeating all adhesive procedures, will produce good effect on adaptation of compomer to dentin if the dentin surface or polymerized adhesive is contaminated by saliva.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the bonding of compomer to deciduous dentin which is known to have been developed to improve the weak properties of glass ionomer cement and composite resin. 120 sound primary molars were used for the shear bond strength test and another 24 for the scanning electron microscopic evaluation. Each material was ailed into polyethylene mold attached to exposed dentinal surface($3{\times}4mm$ in diameter) of sample blocks. Shearbond strength was measured using Universal testing machine and data were analyzed statistically with Oneway-ANOVA and Scheffe test. Scanning electron microscopic observation was performed in order to evaluate the pattern of distribution and penetration of resin tags and hybrid layer. Compomer groups(II-V) showed significantly higher bond strength values than glass ionomer group(I)(p<.05). Etching-compomer groups(III, V) showed the significantly higher bond strength than non-etching compomer groups(II, IV)(p<.05), but slightly lower values than composite resin group(VI) with no statistically significant difference(p>.05). No significantly different bond strength was found between compomer groups of different bonding system(p>.05). Scanning electron micrographs showed more irregular distribution of short and thin resin tags in non-etching compomer groups(II, IV) whereas the more regular and intimate distribution of long and thick tags in etching compomer groups(III, V) and composite resin group(VI). The evaluation of hybrid layer also showed more regular formation of thicker layer in etching compomer groups(III, V). Based on the results of present study, the use of compomer as an esthetic restorative material for primary molars might be justified.
The purpose of the study is to evaluate the degree of the marginal leakage of class V cavities with 4 brands of esthetic filling materials by means of the dye penetration at the enamel & dentinal margins. 160 cavities of class V were prepared on the buccal & lingual surfaces of 80 extracted premolar teeth, which divided into 4 groups. The four groups of cavities were filled with Durafill$^{(R)}$-Durafill bond$^{(R)}$(KuIzer & Co GmbH), Bisfil M$^{(R)}$-Resin bond$^{(R)}$(BISCO Inc.), Silux$^{(R)}$-Scotchbond$^{(R)}$(3M Co.) and Fuji ionomer$^{(R)}$(type II, G-C Co.) each. All specimens were immersed in 2% methylene blue dye solution for 24 hours at $37^{\circ}C$ after a 30-second thermocycling at $4^{\circ}C$ and $60^{\circ}C$ and longitudinally sectioned with diamond disk into two parts. The results were as follows : 1. At enamel margins, the group filled with Durafill$^{(R)}$-Durafill bond$^{(R)}$, Bisfil M$^{(R)}$-Resin bond$^{(R)}$ and Silux$^{(R)}$-Scotchbond$^{(R)}$ show no significant difference each other(p>0.05), and the above groups show less marginal leakage comparing with the group filled with Fuji ionomer$^{(R)}$(p<0.01). 2. At dentinal margins, the group filled with Silux$^{(R)}$-Scotchbond$^{(R)}$ or Fuji ionomer$^{(R)}$ show less marginal leakage than that with Durafill$^{(R)}$-Durafill bond$^{(R)}$ or Bisfil M$^{(R)}$-Resin bond$^{(R)}$(p<0.01). 3. The enamel margins show less marginal leakage than dentinal margins in all the class V cavities(p<0.01).
Compomer is composed of matrix and filler : matrix is made of the combination of resins and polycarboxylic molecules that are light-cured, and a filler is a glass component which is capable of ion-release. The resin content of compomers produces polymerization shrinkage which can adversely affect marginal adaptation. Pretreatment is a fundamental step which is treated with conditioner or primer in the use of these materials. Microleakage of restorative materials has been investigated mostly by dye penetration method. Dye penetration method was not quantitative and not measured repeatedly. Fluid filtration method, introduced and developed by Pashley's group, has been extensively used for 20 years for research purpose to understand the physiology of dentin, as well as the effects of various restorative treatments on dentin permeability. It permits quantitative, nondestructive measurment of microleakage in a longitudinal manner. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the change of dentin permeability according to the process of compomer restoration. In this study. Cl V cavities were prepared on buccal surface of thirty extracted human molars. The prepared cavities were etched by 37% phosphoric acid. The experimental teeth were randomly divided into three groups. Each group was treated with following materials Group 1 : Prime & Bond NT/Dyract AP, Group2: Single Bond/F2000 compomer, Group 3 : Syntac Single Component/Compoglass. The bonding agent and compomer were applied for each group following manufacturers information. Dentin permeability of each group was measured at each process by fluid filtration method; Step 1 : preparation(smear layer). Step 2 : etching(smear layer removal), Step 3 : applying the bonding agent, Step 4 : filling the compomer. Dentin permeability was expressed by hydraulic conductance ($\mu\textrm{l}$ min$^{-1}$cm$H_2O$$^{-1}$). The data were analysed statistically using One-way ANOVA and Sheffe's method. The results were as follows : 1. Dentin permeability differences between each process were significant except between step 1 and step 2(p<0.01). 2. Dentin permeability after removal of smear layer was highly increased(p<0.01). 3. In most case, decrease of dentin permeability was obtained by applying bonding agent(p<0.01). 4. Dentin permeability differences among the experimental groups were not significant(p>0.05). 5. None of compomers used in this study showed perfect seal at the interface.

In order to investigate the potential of very low molecular weight hyaluronic acid(oligo HA) as a cosmetic ingredient, we first measured its cytotoxicity in fibroblast, keratinocyte, and SIRC cell lines. For efficacy test, its moisturizing effect and penetration rate were evaluated in an artificial skin system and Caco-2 cells. Oligo HA did not show any cytotoxicity at a concentration of 300 ${\mu}g/mL$ in fibroblasts and 1,000 ${\mu}g/mL$ in keratinocytes but it showed weak proliferation. In vitro ocular test, oligo HA showed negligible cytotoxicity at the maximum concentrations used(2,000 ${\mu}g/mL$) in SIRC cells. In the test of the single and repeated cutaneous applications, oligo HA under occlusive patch did not provoke any cumulative irritation and sensitization. Oligo HA at a concentration of 0.01 % exhibited a more potent moisturizing effect than hyaluronic acid at a concentration of 0.01 %. In the permeability test using artificial skin and Caco-2 cell lines, hyaluronic acid(M.W. $1.1{\times}10^6$) was hardly observed in the down medium of the inserts. On the other hand, oligo HA(M.W. 5,000) was detected in the down medium up to 16.0 % at 6 h in Caco-2 cell culture and up to 90 % at 6 h in an artificial skin system. These results suggest that oligo HA could be useful as an active ingredient for cosmetics.
To obtain the basic information on wood preservative process using copper, the penetration ACQ-2 preservative agent into Douglas fir wood and its degradational characteristics were investigated. Douglas fir is known to be difficult for preservative agent injection. To find the hindrance factor of the preservatives movement, the ray height, ray density, and length of tracheid were measured and observed by a stereoscopic microscope and scanning electron microscope. The results were compared in the well-penetrated parts of preservatives and insufficient parts. There were no significant differences in height, length, and density between both parts, except for the pits of the wood elements observed in SEM micrograph. More declosed pits were found in the well-penetrated parts of preservatives. Decay characteristics of wood specimen treated with various ACQ concentrations by brown-rot fungi was observed by an optical microscope. The decayed properties of tracheid, rays, and resin canals was found in the non-treated wood specimens and it was also found that some extent of preservatives concentration is necessary to protect the decay.

As Fiber-reinforced composite restorations cannot be made without leaving a marginal gap, luting cements play a pivotal role in sealing the margins as a prevention against margnal leakage. A recently introduced adhesive resin cement system is claimed to adhere chemically, as well as mechanically, to tooth substances, dental alloys and porcelain. But when considering the clinical variation conventional cementation using Zinc Phosphate and Glass-Ionomer can be requested. A vitro study was undertaken to compare microleakage and marginal fitness of Fiber-reinforced composite crowns(Targis/Vectris) depending upon luting cements. Fifty non-carious human premolar teeth were randomly divided into five experimental groups of 10 teeth each and luted with five luting cements. ($Bistite\;II^(R),\;Super-bond^(R),\;Variolink\;II^(R)$), Zinc phosphate and Glass-Ionomer cement) After 24 hours of being luted, all specimens were thermocycled 300 times through water bath of $5^{\circ}C\;and\;55^{\circ}C$ in each bath, then the quality of the marginal fitness was measured by the Digital Microscope and marginal leakage was characterized using Dye Penetration technique and the Digital Microscope The results were as follows : 1. The mean values of marginal fit were Bistite II($46.78{\mu}m$), Variolink II($56.25{\mu}m$), Super-Bond($56.78{\mu}m$), Glass-Ionomer($99.21{\mu}m$), Zinc Phosphate($109.49{\mu}m$) indicated a statistically significant difference at p<0.001. 2. The mean microleakage values of tooth-cement interface, restoration-cement interface were increased in the order of Variolink II, Bistite II, Super-Bond, Glass-Ionomer, Zinc Phosphate 3. Crowns luted with resin cement (Bistite II, Super-Bond, Variolink II, etc) exhibited less marginal gap and marginal leakage than those luted with conventional Glass-Ionomer and Zinc Phosphate cement. 4. The results indicated that all five luting systems yielded comparable and acceptable marginal fit.

This study focuses on evaluating the applicability of an acryl based polymer concrete to the thin bridge deck pavements. The acryl concrete developed in this study is composed of Methyl Methacrylate(MMA) resin, benzol peroxide and fillers. To study the effects of the types and amounts of the components on the physical characteristics of the acryl concrete, viscosity, compressive strength and bending tests were conducted. The optimum mixture design was then determined based on the testing results. Several different types of laboratory tests, such as water and chlorine ion penetration tests, shrinkage and thermal coefficients tests, and tensile bonding strength tests were performed for the optimum acryl concrete and conventional cement concrete. The testing results show that water and chroline ion resistance, bonding strength between acryl and cement concrete and crack resistance of the acryl concrete is better than those of the conventional cement concrete. There are shortcomings that the conventional acryl concrete has a higher shrinkage and thermal coefficients. However, it was confirmed that to use newly developed rubberized MMA resin in this study reduces the crack resistance with substantially increased ductility.
