  • In order to define the effects on shapes of welding joint, during Post Welding Heat Treatment (PWHT), we have carried out numerical analysis on the several test pieces by using computer program which was based on thermal-elasto-plastic-creep theories for the study. And then, welding residual stresses after PWHT were measured same test-pieces to compare with the results of numerical analysis. The main results obtained from this study is as follows: 1) The distribution modes of welding residual stresses are same on the all test pieces after and during PWHT by the both sides (measurement and numerical analysis). 2) The mechanical difference for change the thickness of plate and bevel angle are not appeared. 3) In a mechanical point of view (like material quality test, welding deformation etc.), manimum bevel angle (40$^{\circ}$.) is more suitable than maximum bevel angle (70$^{\circ}$).

  • Interfacial evaluation, damage sensing and cure monitoring of single carbon fiber/thermo setting composite with different curing processes were investigated using electro-micromechanical test. After curing, the residual stress was monitored by measurement of electrical resistance and then compared to various curing processes. In thermal curing case, matrix tensile strength, modulus and interfacial shear strength were higher than those of ultraviolet curing case. The shrinkage measured during thermal curing occurred significantly by matrix shrinkage and residual stress due to the difference in thermal expansion coefficient. The apparent modulus measured in the thermal curing indicated that mechanical and interfacial properties were highly improved. The reaching time to the same stress of thermal curing was faster than that of UV curing case.

  • The nanoindentation technique is widely used to investigate the mechanical properties of nano-microscale materials. The nanoindentation method for assessing mechanical properties at low loads and shallow depths is already well established fur the characterization of thin films as well as bulk materials. In this study, we evaluated residual stress in DLC and Au thin films usign nanoindentation technique with a new stress-relaxation model. Moreover, We suggest a composite hardness equation and quantify the magnitude of hardness increase by using an equation based on the interface hardness and the interface thickness, derived by comparing results derived from this equation and those determined in nanoindentation tests. Finally, We present an indentation size effect (ISE) model that extends the available contact depth for ISE application down to several tens of nanometers by considering the tip bluntness effect.

  • To predict residual stresses of aluminum ring rolls after quenching and element removal, 2-D and 3-D thermal elasto-plastic analyses were performed. Strains measured by three step sectioning method were directly compared to those analysed using ABAQUS's element removal. Numerical residual stresses after quenching had similar tendency to measured ones after 2 step aging, but the difference between numerical and measured ones was large. The difference is the reason why there are nonuniform residual stress distributions to ring height direction due to small height of ring, It is judged that the increase of ring height will improve the accuracy of measured ones and decrease the difference. By direct comparison between 3-D numerical strains to simulate three step sectioning method and measured ones, the accuracy of measurement and analysis can be improved. It is concluded that there can be predicted the deformation behavior on machining complex shaped large structures with residual stresses.

  • As a result of a mismatch of the residual stress between both sides of the silicon wafer, which warps and distorts during the patterning process. The accuracy of the warpage measurement is related to the calibration. A CCD camera was used for the calibration. Performing optimization of the error function constructed with phase values measured at each pixel on the CCD camera, the coordinates of each light source can be precisely determined. Measurement results after calibration was performed to determine the warpage of the silicon wafer demonstrate that the maximum discrepancy is $5.6{\mu}m$ with a standard deviation of $1.5{\mu}m$ in comparison with the test results obtained by using a Form TalySurf instrument.

  • In this paper, a novel laser-based non-contact and non-destructive stress measurement technique is newly proposed for measuring stress in steel structural members. As the demand of stress monitoring in structural members is increased, various non-destructive techniques are being applied to the field of structural health monitoring. Spectroscopic techniques are non-contact technique and widely used for chemical identification of target materials. Especially, piezospectroscopic technique is a residual stress measurement technique in thermal barrier coatings. Although the piezospectroscopic technique has high possibility of measuring structural stress in steel members, the technique has been rarely applied to this field. In this paper, piezospectroscopy-based stress measurement technique is, therefore, proposed for measuring stress in steel structural member. To do that, alumina particles have been coated onto a specimen of a structural steel rod using a thermal spray coating technique. And then, an uniaxial compression test has been conducted to the specimen to collect each fluorescence spectrum under different loading conditions. Finally, the linear relation of spectral shift and applied compressive stress of the specimen has been experimentally established.

  • X-ray diffractometers are used to characterize material properties, such as the phase, texture, lattice constant and residual stress, based on the diffracted beams obtained from specimens. Quantitative analyses using X-rays are typically conducted by measuring the peak positions of the diffracted beams. However, the long-term use of the diffractomer, like any other machine, results in errors associated with the mechanical parts, which can deteriorate the accuracy of the quantitative analyses. In this study, the process of correcting systematic errors in the $2{\theta}$ range of $30{\sim}90^{\circ}$ is discussed, for which strain-free Si powders from NIST were used as the standard specimens. For the evaluation of the impact of such error correction, we conducted a quantitative analysis of the true lattice constant for tungsten thin films.

  • This investigation reports the grinding characteristics of titanium alloy(Ti-6AI-4V). Grinding experiments were performed at various grinding conditions. The grinding forces were measured to investigate the grindability of titanium alloy with the five different wheels including Green carbide, Alumina, Resin Diamond, Resin CBN and Vitrified CBN. To investigate the grinding characteristics of titanium alloy grinding force, force ratio, specific grinding energy and grinding-ratio were measured. Surface roughness was also measured with tracer and the ground surfaces were observed with SEM Residual stress measurement was conducted on the X-Ray Diffractometer. Force ratio of grinding of titanium alloy was very lower than that of grinding of SKD-11 Surface roughness with Resin Diamond wheel was a little larger and rougher surface than that with other wheels Grinding ratio of titanium alloy was a little lower than that of other materials. Grinding ratio of titanium alloy with Diamond wheel was almost six times larger than that With CBN wheel. As a result of five different wheels, the most excellent wheel in grinding of Titanium alloy was Resin Diamond wheel.

  • Various techniques to measure fracture toughness which is an important parameter to predict fracture behavious of structural materials have been reported. Among these mathods, this paper describes the micro-Vickers indentation crack method to estimate the fracture toughness of some WC-Co composites. Two indentation crack patterns (such as radial-median cracks (orhalf-penny cracks) and Palmqvist cracks generated during indentation) are referred precisely. The fracture toughness of WC-4.7wt%Co, WC-6wr%Co and WE-9wr%Co composites were estimated by using some equations given by Shetty et al., Nihara et al. in this study. We show the reliability of indentation method by comparing the results with those from literatures. The appropriate equation to estimate the fracture toughness in the case of WC-Co composite is given. In addition, some technical informations in terms of the crack length by indentation in estimating the existence of the surface residual stress that prevents to obtain an accurate fracture toughness are presented.
