The mode superposition time history analysis method is commonly used in a seismic analysis. The maximum response in the time history analysis can be derived by combining the responses of individual modes. The residual mode response is the response of the modes which are not considered in the time history analysis. In this paper, the residual vector method to consider the residual mode response in the time history analysis is introduced and evaluated. Seismic analyses for a sample structure model and a reactor vessel model are performed to evaluate the residual vector method. The analysis results show that residual mode response is well calculated when the residual vector method is used. It is confirmed that the residual vector method is useful and acceptable to consider the residual mode response in a seismic analysis of the nuclear power plant equipment.

This paper introduces a method for calculation of dynamic stress occurring in flexible bodies of a moving multibody system by using commercial softwares DADS for dynamic analysis and MSC/NASTRAN for finite element analysis. Three methods for model transient response analysis of a flexible body are summarized. Elastic deformation of a flexible body can be described with normal modes and static modes composed of constraint modes and residual attachment modes. The deformation modes divided into fixed-interface modes and free-interface modes can be determined by using MSC/NASTRAN and selected for dynamic analysis. The dynamic results obtained from DADS are utilized to calculate dynamic stress by using mode-displacement method or mode-acceleration method of MSC/NASTRAN. As a numerical example of the analysis, we used a three dimensional slider-crank model with a flexible connecting rod.

This paper presents an experimental result of virtual mode input shaping for positioning stage. Input shaping is liable to increase the rise time of the system, which often degrades the performance of system. The virtual mode input, shaping is an input shaper design method to improve this problem. Experiments are performed with a precise positioning stage with a flexible beam of which natural frequency is adjustable. The experimental results show that the virtual-mode shaper is useful to reduce the rise time as well as the residual vibration of precise positioning stages.

Many manufacturing devices must execute motions as quickly as possible to achieve profitable high-volume production. Most of them have devices having flexibility and a time delay of one sampling is added to the plants when they are controlled by fast discrete controllers, which brings about non-minimum phase zeros. This paper develops a control strategy that combines feedforward and feedback control with command shaping for such devices. First, the feedback controller is designed to increase damping and eliminate steady-state error. Next, the feedforward controller is designed to speed up the transient response. Finally, an appropriate reference profile is generated using command-shaping techniques to ensure fast point-to-point motions with minimum residual vibration. The particular focus of the paper is to understand the interactions between these individual control components. The resulting control strategy is demonstrated on a model of a high-speed semiconductor manufacturing machine.

In this paper, the optimal command input is considered in order to minimize the residual vibrations of a flexible cantilever beam when the beam simply changes its position by translation or rotation. Although a cantilever beam has many modes of vibration, it is shown that the consideration of the first mode is sufficient in this case. Thus, the problem becomes a single-degree-of-freedom system subjected to a ground excitation. Two simple methods are proposed to find the optimal command input based on the shock response spectrum (SRS). The first method is the simplest and can be applied to lightly damped cases, and the second method is applicable to more general problems. The second method gives almost the same results as the input shaping method. However the proposed method gives a easier and clearer control strategy.
An accurate substructural synthesis method including random responses synthesis, frequency-response functions synthesis and mid-order modes synthesis is developed based on rigorous substructure description, dynamic condensation and coupling. An entire structure can firstly be divided into several substructures according to different functions, geometric and dynamic characteristics. Substructural displacements are expressed exactly by retained mid-order fixed-interfacial normal modes and residual constraint modes. Substructural interfacial degree-of-freedoms are eliminated by interfacial displacements compatibility and forces equilibrium between adjacent substructures. Then substructural mode vibration equations are coupled to form an exact-condensed synthesized structure equation, from which structural mid-order modes are calculated accurately. Furthermore, substructural frequency-response function equations are coupled to yield an exact-condensed synthesized structure vibration equation in frequency domain, from which the generalized structural frequency-response functions are obtained. Substructural frequency-response functions are calculated separately by using the generalized frequency-response functions, which can be assembled into an entire-structural frequency-response function matrix. Substructural power spectral density functions are expressed by the exact-synthesized substructural frequency-response functions, and substructural random responses such as correlation functions and mean-square responses can be calculated separately. The accuracy and capacity of the proposed substructure synthesis method is verified by numerical examples.

Buckling-restrained braced frames (BRBFs) are commonly used as the lateral force-resisting systems in building structures in the seismic regions. The nearly-symmetric hysteretic response and the delayed brace core fracture of buckling-restrained braces (BRBs) under the axial cyclic loading provide the adequate lateral force and deformation capacity to BRBFs under the earthquake excitation. However, the smaller axial stiffness of BRBs result in the undesirable higher residual drift response of BRBFs in the post-earthquake scenario. Two alternative approaches are investigated in this study to improve the elastic axial stiffness of BRBs, namely, (i) by shortening the yielding cores of BRBs; and (ii) by reducing the BRB assemblies and adding the elastic brace segments in series. In order to obtain the limiting yielding core lengths of BRBs, a modified approach based on Coffin-Manson relationship and the higher mode compression buckling criteria has been proposed in this study. Both non-linear static and dynamic analyses are carried out to analytically evaluate the seismic response of BRBFs fitted with short-core BRBs of two medium-rise building frames. Analysis results showed that the proposed brace systems are effective in reducing the inter-story and residual drift response of braced frames without any significant change in the story shear and the displacement ductility demands.

Input shaping is an efficient tool to eliminate transient and residual vibration caused by motion of mechanical systems. However, the rise time of the systems tends to increase due to the presence of input shapers. This paper is concerned with the rise time reduction when using input shaping. To this end, this paper proposes an input shaper design method for an undamped single mode vibration system using a virtual mode, which is not an actual mode but reflected in the design process. The essence of the proposed method is to design a three-impulse input shaper as if a single mode system has two modes: one actual mode and one virtual mode. The natural frequency of the virtual mode is a design parameter to change the rise time of the system. This paper discusses the performance of the proposed input shapers by simulation.
In the recent years, steel box girder bridges have been extensively used due to high bending stiffness, torsional rigidity, and rapid construction. Therefore, researches related to this girder bridge have been widely conducted. This paper investigates the effect of residual stresses and geometric imperfections on the load-carrying capacity of steel box girder bridges spanning 30 m and 50 m. A three - dimensional finite element model of the steel box girder with a closed section was developed and analyzed using ABAQUS software. Nonlinear inelastic analysis was used to capture the actual response of the girder bridge accurately. Based on the results of analyses, the superimposed mode of webs and flanges was recommended for considering the influence of initial geometric imperfections of the steel box model. In addition, 4% and 16% strength reduction rates on the load - carrying capacity of the perfect structural system were respectively recommended for the girders with compact and non-compact sections, whose designs satisfy the requirements specified in AASHTO LRFD standard. As a consequence, the research results would help designers eliminate the complexity in modeling residual stresses and geometric imperfections when designing the steel box girder bridge.
