  • Objectives : The term ByunJeung is usually used to represent the characteristic of Korean Medicine. However the meaning of ByunJeung has not been consistent. After the 1980s when Traditional Chinese Medicine was introduced into Korea, the meaning of ByunJeung in Korea became diverse. In this paper, we aimed to research how the meaning of ByunJeung has been varied. Methods : We used four major journal database in Korea to search articles related to ByunJeung. Using the terms such as "변증" and "辨證", which mean ByungJeung in Korean and Chinese, we collected 500 articles in total. Among them, we chose only 61 articles selectively which mainly focused on the meaning of ByunJeung. We categorized those according to the specific meaning of ByunJeung which each article used, and qualitatively analyzed those articles. Results : Articles related to ByunJeung were categorized into three different groups. The first group was for the articles which dealt with changing meanings of ByunJeung. The second group was for the articles which focused on the modernized meaning of ByunJeung. The third group was for the articles which was on the traditional meaning of ByunJeung. Conclusions : The term ByunJeung holds a key concept in the current field of Korean medicine. Nevertheless, since the meaning of ByunJeung has been diverse, it often caused confusion among the people who used the term ByunJeung. Therefore we need to clarify the exact meaning when we intend to use the term. Also there should be a further discussion on the meaning of ByunJeung in the field of Korean medicine to facilitate better understanding on the characteristic of Korean medicine.

  • This paper reviews research outputs in Korea Journal of Population Studies (KJPS) and the changes in their contents during the period of 1977-2004. In the early years of KJPS, various types of outputs were published, but changes have been made into a direction that research articles compose the main context of the journal. As the journal published twice a year, the total number of articles of the journal shows a trend of marked rise. An analysis of the themes of articles shows that the trend of research in Korean demography has changed hand in hand with transformations of the Korean society. The traditional topics such as population policy, fertility, mortality, and migration were popular before. Labor force, nuptiality, family, aging, regional studies are found to be more popular themes of research recently. Reflecting academic and social demands, KJPS has a broaden range of authors, such as professor, researcher, a government employee, post-doc, and graduate students. The articles written by those working in universities have increased continuously, while research outputs of research institutes have decreased recently. The data for analysis used in articles are varied from but concentrated in some materials - census, vital statistics and various survey data. In early years of KJPS, relatively simple techniques of analysis were adopted in the majority of articles. However, more sophisticated techniques including applied regression analysis, logistic analysis and analysis of survival ratio turn out to be more popular recently. Finally, several suggestions for the future research are presented in this paper.

  • This review was conducted to analyze the current situation of aromatherapy research and to provide novel approach to the application of aromatherapy in Korean medicine. We reviewed peer-reviewed research articles published in Korean journals since 1998 up to 2010 related to the medical use of aromatherapy. We searched six electronic database to find all relevant articles using the terms "aromatherapy", "aroma" in English and Korean, and hand searched relevant journal articles. Among 180 identified articles, 115 clinical trials and 28 articles related to the Korean medicine were analyzed. Results showed that the articles on aromatherapy increased steeply during 2001~2004 in various study fields. The clinical studies with psychological disorders (57 articles) and women (42.7%) are reported most frequently. Though the Korean medicine tried to adopt aromatherapy earlier than other fields for the similarity, but there had not been quite a number of studies supporting the clinical applications. Several herbs like frankincense, jasmine, neroli and sandalwood are using in both Korean medicine and aromatherapy. There were many attempts to combine aromatherapy and Korean medicine but still more studies are needed. Aromatherapy have been studied in many research fields with various medical applications. There have been efforts to deploy aromatherapy to the clinical use and the potential value for the clinical practice of Korean medicine can be examined with more rigorous and innovative studies.

  • Health care wearables are devices that are attached to or combined with the human body to improve the health care capabilities of the human body that can be safely and adjustable according to preference. This study provided direction for future research on healthcare wearables in the field of clothing science, considering trends observed in this field from 2010 to 2019. Over the last 10 years, 812 studies have been conducted on healthcare wearables in Korea. Research has increased significantly since 2015, with a large number of articles published in this field. The research for this study was broken down into the following categories: technology development, marketing analysis, and technology analysis. The results according to the research method demonstrated that development and production methods were used most frequently, followed by trend analysis, experiment and evaluation, and survey. An analysis of keywords in the articles studied revealed that device, healthcare, big data (biometric data and database), and healthcare convergence technologies were trending. Similarly, detailed research on healthcare wearable devices and related technologies was actively being conducted. However, focusing on fiber, textiles, design, and clothing articles, in relation to the field of clothing in healthcare wearables, only 81 articles were found on this topic (10.0%), which was low compared to other studies. Therefore, it was determined that more research on healthcare wearables is necessary in the field of clothing.
