Cache Optimization on Hot-Point Proxy Caching Using Weighted-Rank Cache Replacement Policy

  • The development of proxy caching is essential in the area of video-on-demand (VoD) to meet users' expectations. VoD requires high bandwidth and creates high traffic due to the nature of media. Many researchers have developed proxy caching models to reduce bandwidth consumption and traffic. Proxy caching keeps part of a media object to meet the viewing expectations of users without delay and provides interactive playback. If the caching is done continuously, the entire cache space will be exhausted at one stage. Hence, the proxy server must apply cache replacement policies to replace existing objects and allocate the cache space for the incoming objects. Researchers have developed many cache replacement policies by considering several parameters, such as recency, access frequency, cost of retrieval, and size of the object. In this paper, the Weighted-Rank Cache replacement Policy (WRCP) is proposed. This policy uses such parameters as access frequency, aging, and mean access gap ratio and such functions as size and cost of retrieval. The WRCP applies our previously developed proxy caching model, Hot-Point Proxy, at four levels of replacement, depending on the cache requirement. Simulation results show that the WRCP outperforms our earlier model, the Dual Cache Replacement Policy.

  • 대부분의 웹 캐시는 도큐먼트를 기반으로 하여 캐시 내에 임시적으로 도큐먼트를 저장하고 사용자의 요청이 있을 때 그에 해당된 도큐먼트가 캐시 내에 존재하면 그 도큐먼트를 사용자에게 전송해 주고, 캐시 내에 존재하지 않을 때에는 새로운 도큐먼트를 서버에게 요청하여 캐시 내에 복사를 하고 사용자에게 되돌려 준다. 이때 캐시의 용량 초과로 인해 새로운 도큐먼트를 기존의 도큐먼트와 교체하기 위해 도큐먼트 교체정책(replacement policy)을 사용한다. 일반적인 교체정책에는 도큐먼트를 기반으로 한 LRU기법이나 UFU기법 등이 있고, 그 밖의 여러 가지 교체정책을 사용하여 캐시내의 도큐먼트를 효과적으로 교체한다. 하지만, 위의 교체정책은 사이트의 인기도를 고려하지 않고 도큐먼트 요청 시간과 빈도수 만을 고려하여 교체정책을 수행한다. 따라서 본 논문에서는 요청이 빈번한 도큐먼트와 사이트의 인기도를 고려한 교체정책을 사용하여 요청이 빈번하지 않은 도큐먼트를 효과적으로 교체함으로써 캐시의 적중률(hit-ratio)을 높이고, 캐시의 내용을 효과적으로 관리할 수 있는 현대적인 네트워크 환경에 적합한 도큐먼트 교체정책인 사이트의 인기도를 고려한 도큐먼트 교체 정책을 제시한다.

새로운 연령교체 방식의 개발 (On the New Age Replacement Policy)

  • Purpose: Recently, Jiang defines the tradeoff B life to minimize a sum of life lost by preventive maintenance (PM) and corrective maintenance (CM) contribution parts and sets up an optimal replacement age of age replacement policy as this tradeoff life. In this paper, Jiang's model only considering the known lifetime distribution is extended by assigning different weights to two parts of PM and CM in order to reflect the practical maintenance situations in application. Methods: The new age replacement model is formulated and the meaning of a weight factor is expressed with the implied cost of failure under asymptotic expected cost model and also discussed with one-cycle expected cost criterion. Results: The proposed model is applied to Weibull and lognormal lifetime distributions and optimum PM replacement ages are derived with corresponding implied cost of failure. Conclusion: The new age replacement policy to escape the estimation of cost of failure in classical asymptotic expected cost criterion based on the renewal process is provided.

손실함수를 고려한 열화시스템의 최적교체정책 (Optimal Replacement Policy of Degradation System with Loss Function)

  • Replacement policy of a degradation system is investigated by incorporating the loss function. Loss function is defined by the deviation of the value of quality characteristic from its target value, which determines the loss cost. Cost function is comprised of the inspection cost, replacement cost and loss cost. Two cost minimization problems are formulated : 1)determination of an optimal inspection period given the state for the replacement and 2)determination of an optimal state for replacement under fixed inspection period. Simulation analysis is performed to observe the variation of total cost with respect to the variation of the parameters of loss function and inspection cost, respectively As a result, parameters of loss function are seen to be the most sensitive to the total cost. On the contrary, inspection cost is observed to be insensitive. This study can be applied to the replacement policy of a degradation system which has to produce the quality critical product.

  • In this paper, replacement problems for a deteriorating system are considered. In the system under consideration, the successive lifetimes after repair become shorter and shorter, while the consecutive repair times become longer and longer. More specifically, the lifetimes of the system form a nonhomogeneous Poisson process, whereas the consecutive repair times constitute a stochastically increasing geometric process. Optimal replacement policies for the long-run average cost rate and the steady state availability are considered. Also taking the cost and the availability into consideration at the same time, the properties of optimal policies under the Cost Priority Policy and the Availability Priority Policy are obtained.

  • This paper focuses on the optimal replacement time of engine modules of the F16 aircraft. Generally, the optimal replacement time of those should be determined to minimize the replacement cost due to out of order and opportunistic replacement cost of operation cost of remaining period. This paper determined the optimal replacement time by using the opportunistic replacement algorithm that is developed by Forbes and Wyatt. Some real data are utilized but a few data is estimated due to limitation of data. As a result, fan module only reaches to the opportunistic replacement time. The optimal replacement time of the fan module is derived as 1740 cycles. Therefore, the optimal replacement policy of engine modules of the F16 is that fan module should be replaced whenever it is out of order under 1740 cycles and whenever core module is out of order over 1740 cycles.

LDF-CLOCK: The Least-Dirty-First CLOCK Replacement Policy for PCM-based Swap Devices

  • Phase-change memory (PCM) is a promising technology that is anticipated to be used in the memory hierarchy of future computer systems. However, its access time is relatively slower than DRAM and it has limited endurance cycle. Due to this reason, PCM is being considered as a high-speed storage medium (like swap device) or long-latency memory. In this paper, we adopt PCM as a virtual memory swap device and present a new page replacement policy that considers the characteristics of PCM. Specifically, we aim to reduce the write traffic to PCM by considering the dirtiness of pages when making a replacement decision. The proposed replacement policy tracks the dirtiness of a page at the granularity of a sub-page and replaces the least dirty page among pages not recently used. Experimental results with various workloads show that the proposed policy reduces the amount of data written to PCM by 22.9% on average and up to 73.7% compared to CLOCK. It also extends the lifespan of PCM by 49.0% and reduces the energy consumption of PCM by 3.0% on average.

An Opportunity-based Age Replacement Policy with Warranty Analysed by Using TTT-Transforms

  • In a recent paper Iskandar & Sandoh (1999) studied an opportunity-based age replacement policy for a system which has a warranty period (0,S]. When the system fails at age x $\leq$ S a minimal repair is performed. If an opportunity occurs to the system at age x, S $\leq$ x $\leq$ T, we take the opportunity with probability p to preventively replace the system, while we conduct a corrective .replacement when its fails in (S,T). Finally, if its age reaches T, we perform a preventive replacement, Under this policy the design variable is T. For the case when opportunities occur according to a homogeneous Poisson process, the long-run average cost of this policy was formulated and studied analytically by Iskandar & Sandoh (1999). The same problem is here analysed by using a graphical technique based on scaled TTT-transforms. This technique gives, among other things, excellent possibilities for different types of sensitivity analysis. We also extend the discussion to the situation when we have to estimate T based on times to failure.

  • This paper proposes a new two-dimensional warranty policy with replacement and repair regions and analyses the warranty cost under the new warranty policy. The product is sold under a two-dimensional warranty(usage and age) in which two regions exist : the failed product is replaced by the manufacturer in the replacement region or minimally repaired by the manufacturer in the repair region. The formula of the expected warranty cost under some assumptions about usage and failure is obtained. Numerical examples are studied.
