Crevice corrosion is the accelerated attack occurred in the occluded cell under a crevice on the metal surface. Crevice corrosion behaviors of nickel-based alloys such as Alloy 600 and Alloy 690 were investigated in acidic solution with different chloride ion concentrations. Tests were carried out using the specially designed crevice cell with a very narrow Luggin capillary assembly to measure the potential inside the crevice. It is believed that crevice corrosion in active/passive system like nickel-based alloys has much to do with the properties of passive film and its repassivation characteristics, investigated by the capacitance measurement and by the abrading electrode technique, respectively. An attempt was made to elucidate the relationship between crevice corrosion behaviors, properties of passive film and its repassivation kinetics. Results showed that repassivation rate parameter $n1{\leq}0.6$ and/or $n2{\leq}0.5$ indicated the possible occurrence of crevice corrosion.
The surface characteristics of nitrogen ion implanted iron aluminides were investigated using various electrochemical methods in $H_2$$SO_4$+KSCN and HCl solutions. Nitrogen ion implantation was performed with doses of $3.0$\times$10^{17}$ /ions/$\textrm{cm}^2$ at an energy of 150keV. Nitrogen ion implanted iron aluminides increased the corrosion potential and significantly decreased grain boundary activation, the active current density, and passive current density. Nitrogen implanted iron aluminides with Mo increased the corrosion, pitting potential, repassivation potential and │$E_{pit}$-$E_{corr}$│ value. Whereas, implanted iron aluminides containing boron reduced the pitting and repassivation potential in comparison with nitrogen implanted iron aluminides with Cr and Mo.o.
The capacity of passive metal to repassivate after film damage determines the development of local corrosion and the resistance to corrosion failures. In this work, the repassivation kinetics of 316L stainless steel (316L SS) was investigated in borate buffer solution (pH 9.1) using a novel abrading electrode technique. The repassivation kinetics was analyzed in terms of the current density flowing from freshly bare 316L SS surface as measured by a potentiostatic method. During the early phase of decay (t < 2 s), according to the Avrami kinetics-based film growth model, the transient current was separated into anodic dissolution ($i_{diss}$) and film formation ($i_{film}$) components and analyzed individually. The film reformation rate and thickness were compared according to applied potential. Anodic dissolution initially dominated the repassivation for a short time, and the amount of dissolution increased with increasing applied potential in the passive region. Film growth at higher potentials occurred more rapidly compared to at lower potentials. Increasing the applied potential from 0 $V_{SCE}$ to 0.8 $V_{SCE}$ resulted in a thicker passive film (0.12 to 0.52 nm). If the oxide monolayer covered the entire bare surface (${\theta}=1$), the electric field strength through the thin passive film reached $1.6{\times}10^7V/cm$.
Additively manufactured (AM) Ti-6Al-4V alloys exhibit a dominant acicular martensite phase (α'), which is characterized by an unstable energy state and highly localized corrosion susceptibility. Electrochemical critical localized corrosion temperature (E-CLCT, ISO 22910: 2020) and electrochemical critical localized corrosion potential (E-CLCP, ISO AWI 4631: 2021) were measured to analyze the localized corrosion resistance of the AM Ti-6Al-4V alloy. Although E-CLCP was measured under mild corrosive conditions such as human body, the validity of evaluating localized corrosion resistance of AM titanium alloys was demonstrated by comparison with E-CLCT. However, the mechanisms of resistance to localized corrosion on the as-received and heat-treated AM Ti-6Al-4V alloys under E-CLCT and E-CLCP differ at various temperatures because of differences in properties under localized corrosion and repassivation. The E-CLCT is mainly measured for initiation of localized corrosion on the AM titanium alloys based on temperature, whereas the E-CLCP yields repassivation potential of re-generated passive films of AM titanium alloys after breaking down.
This study aimed to predict the pitting corrosion characteristics of AL-6XN super-austenitic steel using multiple linear regression. The variables used in the model are degree of sensitization, temperature, and pH. Experiments were designed and cyclic polarization curve tests were conducted accordingly. The data obtained from the cyclic polarization curve tests were used as training data for the multiple linear regression model. The significance of each factor in the response (critical pitting potential, repassivation potential) was analyzed. The multiple linear regression model was validated using experimental conditions that were not included in the training data. As a result, the degree of sensitization showed a greater effect than the other variables. Multiple linear regression showed poor performance for prediction of repassivation potential. On the other hand, the model showed a considerable degree of predictive performance for critical pitting potential. The coefficient of determination (R2) was 0.7745. The possibility for pitting potential prediction was confirmed using multiple linear regression.
Effects of Al and Cr alloying elements on the corrosion behavior of Fe-Al-Cr alloy system was investigated using potentiodynamic and cyclic potentiodynamic polarization tests(CPPT) in the $H_2SO_4$ and HCI solutions. The corrosion morphologies in Fe-Al-Cr alloy were analysed by utilizing scanning electron microscopy(SEM) and EDX. It was found that the corrosion potential of Fe-20Cr-20Al was highest whereas the critical anodic current density and passive current density were lower than that of the other alloys in 0.1 M $H_2SO_4$ solution. The second anodic peak at 1000 mV disappeared in the case of alloys containing high Al and low Cr contents. Pitting potential increased with increasing Cr content and repassivation potential decreased with decreasing Al content in 0.1 M HCI solution. Fe-Al-Cr alloy containing high Al and Cr contents showed remarkably improved pitting resistance against $Cl^-$ attack from pit morphologies.
The present study concerns the corrosion mitigation of electrochemical chloride extraction (ECE) in concrete structure. Concrete specimen was fabricated with 5.0% chloride in cast, while the other specimen was exposed to 4.0M NaCl solution for 1 year to accelerate corrosion of steel. Then, the ECE was applied to the concrete specimen with 1000 mA/m2 of the current density for 2, 4 and 8 weeks, respectively. During the ECE, the corrosion current density and corrosion potential were regularly monitored. As a result, the ECE was very effective in mitigating the degree of corrosion on the steel surface. The corrosion current density was significantly reduced from thousands to decades mA/m2, while the corrosion potential was mostly shifted to positive direction. Assuming that the corrosion starts at 1.0 mA/m2 of the corrosion current density or/and -275 mV vs SCE of the corrosion potential, the ECE could not fully achieve the repassivation of the steel, although its degree was lowered more or less depending on the duration of the treatment and type of chloride contamination. A visual examination confirmed that an increase in the duration of the treatment could lower the rust formation, but never fully removed all rust stains.
In this study, the combined effect of chloride and thiosulfate ions and the effect of the ratio of the two ions on passivation in 304L, 316L, and the duplex stainless steels 2101 and 2205 are investigated using potentiostatic scratch tests. Cyclic polarization and the scratch tests were used to understand the role of anions on localized corrosion in these systems. It was found that the thiosulfate pitting began at a lower potential for 2101 than 304L in 0.6 M NaCl + 0.03 M $Na_2S_2O_3$ solution. The pit morphologies for 304L, 316L, and 2101 in an 0.6 M NaCl + 0.03 M $Na_2S_2O_3$ solution were very different from each other. The results indicate that the pitting switches from predominately thiosulfate pitting to chloride pitting at approximately 0.1 V.
The effect of passive film on corrosion of metals and alloys in a static corrosive environment has been studied by many researchers and is well known, however few studies have been conducted on the electrochemical measurement of metals and alloys during cavitation corrosion conditions, and there are no test standards for electrochemical measurements 'During cavitation' conditions. This study used commercially additive manufactured(AM) pure titanium in tests of anodic polarization, corrosion potential measurements, AC impedance measurements, and repassivation. Tests were performed in 3.5% NaCl solution under three conditions, 'No cavitation', 'After cavitation', and 'During cavitation' condition. When cavitation corrosion occurred, the passive current density was greatly increased, the corrosion potential largely lowered, and the passive film revealed a small polarization resistance. The current fluctuation by the passivation and repassivation phenomena was measured first, and this behavior was repeatedly generated at a very high speed. The electrochemical corrosion mechanism that occurred during cavitation corrosion was based on result of the electrochemical properties 'No cavitation', 'After cavitation', and 'During cavitation' conditions.
