In this paper, we consider measurement allocation problem in a spatially correlated sensor field. Our goal is to determine the probability of each sensor's being measured based on its contribution to the estimation reliability; it is desirable that a sensor improving the estimation reliability is measured more frequently. We consider a spatial correlation model of a sensor field reflecting transmission power limit, noise in measurement and transmission channel, and channel attenuation. Then the estimation reliability is defined distortion error between event source and its estimation at sink. Motivated by the correlation nature, we model the measurement allocation problem into a cooperative game, and then quantify each sensor's contribution using Shapley value. Against the intractability in the computation of exact Shapley value, we deploy a randomized method that enables to compute the approximate Shapley value within a reasonable time. Besides, we envisage a measurement scheduling achieving the balance between network lifetime and estimation reliability.

Redundancy-reliability allocation problems in multi-stage series-parallel systems are addressed in this study. Fuzzy programming techniques are proposed for finding satisfactory solutions. First, a multi-objective programming model is formulated for simultaneously maximizing system reliability and minimizing system total cost. Due to the nature of uncertainty in the problem, the fuzzy set theory and technique are used to convert the deterministic multi-objective programming model into a fuzzy nonlinear programming problem. A heuristic method is developed to get satisfactory solutions for the fuzzy nonlinear programming problem. A Pareto optimal solution is found with maximal degree of satisfaction from the interception area of fuzzy sets. A case study that is related to the electronic control unit installed on aircraft engine over-speed protection system is used to implement the developed approach. Results suggest that the developed fuzzy multi-objective programming model can effectively resolve the fuzzy and uncertain problem when design goals and constraints are not clearly confirmed at the initial conceptual design phase.

It is desired to estimate the reliability of a system that has two subsystems connected in series where each subsystem has two components connected in parallel. A batch sequential sampling scheme is introduced. It is shown that the batch sequential sampling scheme is asymptotically optimal as the total number of units goes to infinity. Numerical comparisons indicate that the batch sequential sampling scheme performs better than the balanced sampling scheme and is nearly optimal.
Most engineered systems are designed with high levels of system redundancies to satisfy required reliability requirements under adverse events, resulting in high systems' LCCs (Life-Cycle Costs). Recent years have seen a surge of interest and tremendous advance in PHM (Prognostics and Health Management) methods that detect, diagnose, and predict the effects of adverse events. The PHM methods enable proactive maintenance decisions, giving rise to adaptive reliability. In this paper, we present a RAP (Resilience Allocation Problem) whose goal is to allocate reliability and PHM efficiency to components in an engineering context. The optimally allocated reliability and PHM efficiency levels serve as the design specifications for the system RBDO (Reliability-Based Design Optimization) and the system PHM design, which can be used to derive the detailed design of components and PHM units. The RAP is demonstrated using a simplified aircraft control actuator design problem resulting in a highly resilient actuator with optimally allocated reliability, PHM efficiency and redundancy for the given parameter settings.
The mobile network allows redundant transmission via disjoint paths to support high-reliability communication (e.g., ultrareliable and low-latency communications [URLLC]). Although redundant transmission can improve communication reliability, it also increases network costs (e.g., traffic and control overhead). In this study, we propose a reliability-guaranteed multipath allocation algorithm (RG-MAA) that allocates appropriate paths by considering the path setup time and dynamicity of the reliability paths. We develop an optimization problem using a constrained Markov decision process (CMDP) to minimize network costs while ensuring the required communication reliability. The evaluation results show that RG-MAA can reduce network costs by up to 30% compared with the scheme that uses all possible paths while ensuring the required communication reliability.
Purpose: System consists of a lot of units with coherent function. In design phase, various units could be considered with the same function. In this study, we consider the alternative units with the same function and redundancy allocation to maximize system reliability in multi level system. Methods: The redundancy allocation problem with the alternative units in multi level system is formulated. Memetic algorithm(MA) is proposed to optimize the redundancy allocation problem. In addition, the performance of the proposed algorithm is explained by a numerical experiment. Results: MA showed better results than genetic algorithm(GA) and the convergence of the solutions in MA was also faster than GA. In addition, we could know from experiment that system reliability is increased and the chosen unit for redundancy allocation is changed if cost limit is increased. Conclusion: The chose unit for redundancy allocation is changed as resource constraints. It means we need to consider the alternative units in system design. In the future, we need to consider various problem related to redundancy allocation in multi level system and develop the better method to enhance search performance.
During the design phase of a product, reliability and design engineers are called upon to evaluate the reliability of the system, The question of how to meet target reliability for the system arises when estimated reliability or cost is inadequate. This then becomes a problem of reliability allocation and system structure design. This study proposes the optimization methodology to achieve target reliability with minimum cost through construction of the cost function of system. In cost function, total cost means the sum of initial cost, repair cost and maintenance cost. This study constructs optimization problem about system structure design and reliability allocation using cost function. This problem constructed is solved by Multi-island Genetic Algorithm(MIGA), and applies to urban transit brake system. Current brake system of the urban transit is series system. Series system is the simplest and perhaps one of the most common system, but it demands high reliability and maintenance cost because all components must be operating to ensure system operation. Thus this study makes a comparative study by applying k-out-of-n system to brake system. This methodology presented can be a great tool for aiding reliability and design engineers in their decision-makings.
This paper considers redundancy optimization problems of multi-level systems and reviews existing papers which proposed various optimization models and used different algorithms in this research area. Three different mathematical models are studied: Multi-level redundancy allocation (MRAP), multiple multi-level redundancy allocation, and availability-based MRAP models. Many meta-heuristics are applied to find optimal solutions in the several optimization problems. We summarized key idea of meta-heuristics applied to the existing MARP problems. Two extended models (MRAP with interval reliability of units and an integrated optimization problem of MRAP and preventive maintenance) are studied and further research ideas are discussed.

In the operation of distribution systems, DGs (Distributed Generations) are installed as an alternative to extension and the establishment of substations, transmission and distribution lines according to the increasing power demand. In the operation planning of DGs, determining optimal capacity and allocation achieves economical profitability and improves the reliability of power distribution systems. This paper proposes a determining method for the optimal number, size and allocation of DGs in order to minimize the operation costs of distribution systems. Capacity and allocation of DGs for economical operation planning duration are determined to minimize total cost composed with power buying cost, operation cost of DGs, loss cost and outage cost using the GA (Genetic Algorithm).
A nation-wide water-energy-food (WEF) nexus simulation model has been developed by the authors and successfully applied to South Korea to predict the sustainability of those three resources in the next 30 years. The model was also capable of simulating future scenarios of resources allocation based on priority rules aiming to maximize resources sustainability. However, the process was still relying on several assumptions and trial-and-error approach, which sometimes resulted in non-optimal solutions of resources allocation. In this study, an optimization module was introduced to enhance the model in generating optimal resources management rules. The objective of the optimization was to maximize the reliability index of resources by determining the resources' allocation and/or priority rules for each demand type that accordingly reflect the resources management policies. Implementation of the optimization module would result in balanced allocation and management of limited resources and assist the stakeholders in deciding resources' management plans, either by fulfilling the domestic production or by global trading.
