  • Background: The inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) may be injured during extraction of the mandibular third molar, causing severe postoperative complications. Many methods have been described for evaluating the relative position between the mandibular third molar and the inferior alveolar canal (IAC) on panoramic radiography and computed tomography, but conventional radiography provides limited information on the proximity of these two structures. The present study assessed the benefits of three-dimensional computed tomography (3D-CT) prior to surgical extraction of the mandibular third molar, to prevent IAN damage. Methods: This retrospective study included 4917 extractions in 3555 patients who presented for extraction of the mandibular third molars. The cases were classified into three groups, according to anatomical relationship between the mandibular third molars and the IAC on panoramic radiography and whether 3D-CT was performed. Symptoms of IAN damage were assessed using the touch-recognition test. Data were compared using the chi-square test and Fisher's exact test. Results: Among the 32 cases of IAN damage, 6 cases were included in group I (0.35 %, n = 1735 cases), 23 cases in group II (1.1 %, n = 2063 cases), and 3 cases in group III (0.27 %, n = 1119 cases). The chi-square test showed a significant difference in the incidence of IAN damage between groups I and II. No significant difference was observed between groups I and III using Fisher's exact test. In the 6 cases of IAN damage in group I, the mandibular third molar roots were located lingual relative to the IAC in 3 cases and middle relative to the IAC in 3 cases. The overlap was ${\geq}2mm$ in 3 of 6 cases and 0-2 mm in the remaining 3 cases. The mean distance between the mandibular third molar and IAC was 2.2 mm, the maximum distance 12 mm, and the minimum distance 0.5 mm. Greater than 80 % recovery was observed in 15 of 32 (46.8 %) cases of IAN damage. Conclusions: 3D-CT may be a useful tool for assessing the three-dimensional anatomical relationship and proximity between the mandibular third molar and IAC in order to prevent IAN damage during extraction of mandibular third molars.

  • In this paper, a method of moving path control of an automatic guided vehicle in an indoor environment through recognition of marker images using vision sensors is presented. The existing AGV moving control system using infrared-ray sensors and landmarks have faced at two critical problems. Since there are many windows in a crematorium, they are going to let in too much sunlight in the main hall which is the moving area of AGVs. Sunlight affects the correct recognition of landmarks due to refraction and/or reflection of sunlight. The second one is that a crematorium has a narrow indoor environment compared to typical industrial fields. Particularly when an AVG changes its direction to enter the designated furnace the information provided by guided sensors cannot be utilized to estimate its location because the rotating space is too narrow to get them. To resolve the occurrences of such circumstances that cannot access sensing data in a WSN environment, a relative distance from marker to an AGV will be used as fingerprinting used for location estimation. Compared to the existing fingerprinting method which uses RSS, our proposed method may result in a higher reliable estimation of location. Our experimental results show that the proposed method proves the correctness and applicability. In addition, our proposed approach will be applied to the AGV system in the crematorium so that it can transport a dead body safely from the loading place to its rightful destination.

  • The lichen is generally used as a bio-indicator for the estimation of air pollution. The purpose of this research is to diagnose the level of air pollution by means of lichen Chongju region, relative to the direction of the dominant Wind(WNW) and the distance from the air pollution source. As a result it reveals that the industrial estate, its surroundings and inner city are confronting lichen desert phenomenon, According to the I.A.P index the average SO$_2$density in Chongju city in estimated above 0.03 ppm. However, the number of lichen species and its coverage are increased as the distance becomes further from the pollution source.

  • This paper proposes a novel method to detect unauthorized copies of digital images. This copy detection scheme can be used as either an alternative approach or a complementary approach to watermarking. A test image is reduced to 8$\times$8 sub-image by intensity averaging, and the AC coefficients of its discrete cosine transform (DCT) are used to compute distance from those generated from the query image, of which a user wants to find copies. Copies may be Processed to avoid copy detection or enhance image quality. We show ordinal measure of DCT coefficients, which is based on relative ordering of AC magnitude values and using distance metrics between two rank permutations, are robust to various modifications of the original image. The optimal threshold selection scheme using the maximum a posteriori (MAP) criterion is also addressed.

  • In this paper, a DC potential drop measurement system was used to find the position of the flaw on a simple thin plate. Four-point probe test was evaluated and used for this study. In the four-point probe test, the more distance between current pins provides the more measurable scope, the less voltage difference, and the more voltage difference rate. In the other hand, the more distance between voltage pins provides the less voltage difference and the less voltage difference rate. An optimized four-point probe was applied to measure the relation between voltage and the relative position of flaw to the probe. The Maxwell 21) simulator was used to analyze the electromagnetic field, and it showed that the analytical result was similar to the experimental result within 11.4% maximum error.

  • Gap servo NF (Near Field) system is one of technologies to reduce beam spot size by increasing NA (Numerical Aperture) of lens. To achieve higher NA, SIL (Solid Immersion Lens) is used. In the case of using a blue LD (405 nm) as the light source the gap distance should be controlled under 100 nm with much tighter margin. Because of very small gap distance between SIL bottom and the surface of media, relative tilt tolerance is limited. In this paper, we presented 2-axis tilt mechanism for skew adjustment within small tilt margin.

  • This paper presents the development of a real-time algorithm for collision detection, collision avoidance and guidance to way-point. Three-dimensional point-mass aircraft models are used. For collision detection, time of closest point of approach(CPA) and distance at CPA are compared to threshold values. For collision avoidance, optimal acceleration input which maximizes the terminal relative distance is calculated based on optimal control theory. For guidance to way-point, proportional navigation guidance, the well-known method, is used. Two scenarios of encounter situation are illustrated to validate performance of proposed algorithm.

  • Clustering in spatial mining is to group similar objects based on their distance, connectivity or their relative density in space. In the real world. there exist many physical objects such as rivers, lakes and highways, and their presence may affect the result of clustering. In this paper, we define distance to handle obstacles, and using that we propose the density based clustering algorithm called DBSCAN-O to handle obstacles. We show that DBSCAN-O produce different clustering results from previous density based clustering algorithm DBSCAN by our experiment result.

  • In this paper, we have proposed an independent component analysis (ICA) technique and a median method based on GBD algorithm which classifies images. The proposed method can measure the distance between images, while it does not lose a portion of the image that changes rapidly. Our simulation results show that it not possible for ICA to recognize the relative discernment between images when K is 7. However, with the median method, it can be possible to such a recognition.

  • Information network technologies introduce a new education environment. Cyber education is growing rapidly as a field of practice especially in distance education system. The development of multimedia environment based on such technology as graphics, image, voice, and video, personal computer systems use has become the media for interactive teaching-teaming service. These features have made integrated multimedia education feasible. This research suggested a direction for the development of an interactive distance education system. I have developed an education system which cooperate problem bank and learning system. This system support arbitration of the relative difficulty in the problem bank database. An ongoing version of this research was evaluated. Those findings reveal several factors that influence how the proposed system can be tailored to the students' perspectives in order to come up with the enhanced version of this system.
