  • The purpose of this study was to investigate effects of regular exercise on ADL (activities of daily living) and lipid profiles (total cholesterol, triglyceride, HDL-C, LDL-C) in male patients with dementia. The subjects were consisted of 24 male patients with dementia, they were divided into two groups. the exercise group (EC, n=12) and the control group (CG, n=12). The exercise group participated in regular exercise program, and their ADL, lipid profiles levels were evaluated at baseline (pre, 0 mo), after 6 months (mid, 6 mo), and after 12 months (post, 12 mo). The subjects carried on exercising $30\∼60$ minutes a day, $2\∼3$ times per week for 12 months. Statistical techniques for data analysis was paired samples t-test. The level of statistical significance was $p\leq.0.5$. The results of this study were summarized as follows: In the case of EG, mid and post ADL values significantly higher than that of pre value, whereas there was no significant difference in the CG. Mid and post values of TC, TG, and LDL-C were significantly lower than that of pre value in the EG. However, mid and post HDL-C values were higher in the EG compared to pre value. In conclusion, these results suggest that regular exercise have an positive effect on ADL and lipid profiles in male patient with dementia. In addition, regular exercise may be helpful to reduce the incidence of heart disease and coronary sclerosis.

  • To introduce materials related to our traditional mathematics and to reinterpret modernly them could be a good tool to find the cultural values of them. We analyzed the degree for utilization of the history of mathematics in the middle school textbooks developed depending on the 2009 revised mathematics curriculum. Through this, we suggest the need for research on concrete and practical teaching and learning materials development utilizing the history of mathematics. We reinterpret, in modern style based on the curriculum, two subjects dealt with in 'GakDeungByeonHyeongSeupYu', the first theme of 'SanSulGwanGyeon' written by Lee Sang Hyuk. We expansively reconstruct the original samples up to regular decagon so that students might figure out the situation of all regular polygon using a kind of mathematics software GeoGebra. Also this process is constructed on the basis of the curriculum for an implementation the secondary school classes.

  • In the present work we investigated the effect of regular physical exercise on the activities of erythrocyte antioxidant enzyme, plasma total radical-trapping antioxidant potential(TRAP) and plasma level of lipid peroxidation(malondialdehyde, MDA) in 64 healthy male, aged 34-67 years. The study population were divided in two groups: small amount of exerciser(exercise time less than 10min/d) and moderate amount of exerciser(exercise time more than 20min/d) according to their physical exercise habits measured by a questionnaire. Erythrocyte superoxide dismutase(SOD), glutathione peroxidase(GSH-Px) and catalase(CAT), plasma TRAP, as well as plasma MDA were determined. Erythrocyte GSH-Px and plasma TRAP were higher in moderate amount of exercisers than those in small amount of exercisers by 17% and 26%, respectively. No significant differences were observed in erythrocyte SOD, CAT and plasma MDA between the two groups. Mean exercise time was positively correlated with the erythrocyte GSH-Px activity and plasma TRAP significantly. The results would sugest that regular moderate exercise enhances antioxidant defences against reactive oxygen species and may increase the likelihood of a healthier life span.

  • Tow groups of subjects were studied before, during, and after long-term use of commercial Panax ginseng preparations. Group A (n = 10) consisted of users who also used other psychomotor stimulants including caffeine, while subjects in Group B (n = 8) used no drugs other than ginseng. During 12 weeks of regular ginseng use, users in Group A showed signs of central nervous system stimulation and reported feelings of well-being. Two subjects manifested possible allergic reactions while one developed a ginseng abuse syndrome marked by hypertension, nervousness, sleeplessness, skin eruptions, edema, and morning diarrhea. This syndrome was associated with excessive dosages, concomitant intake of caffeine, and possible allergic reactions. Subjects in Group B reported stimulation and feelings of well-being while showing some signs of nervousness. One subject developed a possible contact urticarial reaction to a ginseng cosmetic. All adverse reaction were transient and disappeared when ginseng use was discontinued. It is suggested that adverse reactions can be prevented by moderate use of standardized ginseng preparations while restricting use of other psychomotor stimulants.
