  • Light Oil Flow Standard System(LOFSS) in Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science(KRISS) was designed for oil flowmeter calibration. In order to extend the flow range from 120 $m^3/h$ to 200 $m^3/h$, the build-up technique was applied with two positive displacement flowmeters as master flowmeter. The master flowmeters were calibrated against with LOFSS, which has 0.04 % uncertainty of flow quantity determination, then the test flowmeter is calibrated against two master flowmeters. For uncertainty analysis, the repeatability of master flowmeters, the variation of the fluid density and the pipe volume due to temperature change were scrutinized. The contribution of each uncertainty factors to the calibrator and the correlation of each factors were discussed. For investigating the feasibility of uncertainty analysis, a turbine flowmeter as a transfer package was tested with LOFSS and two reference flowmeter. The hypothesis test for both results was coincide with a 95 % significant level. This means that the uncertainty analysis procedure of the calibrator is reasonable and the extension of flow range with master meters was carry out successfully.

  • An experimental investigation has been carried out in order to evaluate characteristics of wetted-type multi-path ultrasonic flowmeters. The multi-path ultrasonic flowmeters were installed at various entrance and exit locations for several cases of pipe fitting(straight, $90^{\circ}$ double elbow) and valve(gate valve, butterfly valve). We measured the flow-rate at each location. The measurement data of test flowmeter were compared with the measured data of reference flowmeter. The uncertainties of reference flowmeter and test flowmeter are 0.3 %, 0.4 %, respectively. The results demonstrate the effects of flowmeter location as well as the measurement errors in flow rate. The distance between the flow disturbance factor and a flowmeter was an important element of the test.

  • Measurement uncertainty analysis of fuel flow using turbine flowmeter was performed for the case of altitude engine test. SAE ARP4990 was used as the fuel flow calculation procedure, as well as the mathematical model for the measurement uncertainty assessment. The assessment was performed using Sensitivity Coefficient Method. 11 parameters involved in the calculation of the flow rate were considered. For the given equipment setup, the measurement uncertainty of fuel flow was assessed in the range of 1.19~1.86 % for high flow rate case, and 1.47~3.31 % for low flow rate case. Fluctuation in frequency signal from the flowmeter had the largest influence on the fuel flow measurement uncertainty for most cases. Fuel temperature measurement had the largest for the case of low temperature and low flow rate. Calibration of K-factor and the interpolation of the calibration data also had large influence, especially for the case of very low temperature. Reference temperature, at which the reference viscosity of the sample fuel was measured, had relatively small contribution, but it became larger when the operating fuel temperature was far from reference temperature. Measurement of reference density had small contribution on the flow rate uncertainty. Fuel pressure and atmospheric pressure measurement had virtually no contribution on the flow rate uncertainty.

  • A proficiency test is one of programs which Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science(KRISS), as national metrology institute, is putting in operation for the mutual recognition arrangement. The Fluid Flow Group of KRISS evaluated the measurement capability for liquid flowmeter calibrator of the national calibration and test organizations. The uncertainty of national standard system was estimated in accordance with Guide to The Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement (ISO), and the turbine flowmeter, which was used for the round-robin test as a reference flowmeter, was characterized. The round-robin tests with the turbine flowmeter package were carried out in 1995 and 1999. The test results of the organizations and those of KRISS agreed within $\pm0.2$%. It is found thus that the organizations have the traceability of the national standard for liquid flow measurement.

  • This paper presents the fabrication and evaluation of the novel drag force type air flowmeter using MEMS technologies for the vehicle applications. To obtain the air drag force, the flowmeter utilized the curved beam structure, which was realized by the difference of residual stress between the silicon oxide layer and the silicon nitride layer. The paddle structure was applied for the maximum air drag force, and the dual-beam was adapted to prevent distortion. The basic experiments were performed in the wind tunnel, and the stable outputs were obtained. The device was applied to the internal combustion engine, and the results were compared with the HI-DS output where the convection thermal flowmeter was used as the reference sensor. The results indicated that the comparable resolutions and response times were obtained under the various engine speeds.

  • This paper presents a hybrid navigation system for AUV to locate its position precisely in rough sea. The tracking system is composed of various sensors such as an inclinometer, a tri-axis magnetometer, a flow meter, and a super short baseline(SSBL) acoustic position tracking system. Due to the inaccuracy of the attitude sensors, the heading sensor and the flowmeter, the predicted position slowly drifts and the estimation error of position becomes larger. On the other hand, the measured position is liable to change abruptly due to the corrupted data of the SSBL system in the case of low signal to noise ratio or large ship motions. By introducing a sensor fusion technique with the position data of the SSBL system and those of the attitude heading flowmeter reference system (AHFRS), the hybrid navigation system updates the three-dimensional position robustly. A Kalman filter algorithm is derived on the basis of the error models for the flowmeter dynamics with the use of the external measurement from the SSBL. A failure detection algorithm decides the confidence degree of external measurement signals by using a fuzzy inference. Simulation is included to demonstrate the validity of the hybrid navigation system.

  • Coriolis mass flowmeter(CMF), which can measure the mass flow directly, is getting rapid attention for the industrial and custody transfer purpose. In order to study the characteristics and the applicability of CMF, it is tested with the national flow standard system. Two types of sensing tube, U-type and straight type, are employed in the test. Water, spindle oil and viscosity Standard Reference Material whose viscosities are 1, 20 and, 67 $\textrm{mm}^2$/s, respectively, are studied. It is shown that the linearity of CMF is getting deteriorated as the fluid viscosity increases, which is due to the zero drift and the relaxation time of the fluid. To test its applicability in the case of high pressured gas, it is calibrated using compressed air, It shows 1∼l.6 % deviations compared to the calibration results using water. It concludes that the fluid velocity in CMF should be lower than the sonic velocity. In addition, the effects of the vibration from the pipeline and pump on CMF as well as the long term stability are studied.

  • Comparing to the gravimetric and volumetric method, the flowmeter calibration based on the master meter method is relatively economical and convenient, especially for high flowrate. The uncertainty of flow quantity and flowrate using the master meter method was evaluated according to the GUM (Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement). In order to apply for the wider flow range, two master meters (electromagnetic flow meter) were employed as reference flowmeters. The uncertainty of the master meter was obtained by combining the statistical variation of the repeated measurements and the variation of fluid density and pipe material due to temperature and pressure changes were scrutinized. for a practical application, the uncertainty of calibrator, whose measuring capacity of 1000 ㎥/h obtained by employing two 500 ㎥/h electromagnetic How meters, was evaluated. The uncertainty budget shows the quantitative contribution of each uncertainty component to the overall uncertainty of the calibrator. As a result, it was found that the dominant uncertainties were from the master meter, which was evaluated statistically, and from the process of least squares fitting. On the contrary, the uncertainties arising from the variation of the fluid density and the pipe volume due to the temperature and pressure were negligible.

  • Thermal mass flow meter (TMF) is used measuring the small mass flow rate of gases. Generally, flow rate measuring accuracy of TMF is $\pm2{\%}$ of full scale. TMF is manufactured for specified working pressure and specified working gas by customer. If it were applied for different working pressure and gases, flow rate measurement accuracy decreased dramatically. In this study, a TMF tested with three different gases and pressure range of 0.2 MPa to 1.0 MPa. Effect of specific heat cause to increase flow measurement error as much as ratio of specific heat compare with reference gas. Pressure change cause to increase flowrate measurement deviation about $-0.2{\%}$ as the working pressure decreased 0.1 MPa.
