  • Recently environmental problems such as greenhouse gas emissions has become a global problem. As a result, the current that can be easily used to Petroleum and coal reserves of fossil energy and environmental issues, coupled with the limitations of this finding for renewable energy to replace the movement is spreading around the world. Among them Energy Storage System with secondary battery technology has been increased interest in, Redox flow batteries, unlike the conventional theory, the life of the rechargeable battery almost no restrictions existing lithium-ion batteries 10 times more than the life of the road. In this paper, power plant or power system, installed in a building that can cope with the rapid increase in demand for power redox flow battery for 100kW PCS will be introduced.

Hybrid marine propulsion power system with the redox flow batteries of comprehensive aging model

  • This study proposes a hybrid marine power system combining dual-fuel generators, a fuel cell, and Vanadium Redox Flow Batteries (VRFB). Rigorous verification and validation of the dynamic modelling and integration of the system are conducted. A case study for the application of the hybrid propulsion system to a passenger ship is conducted to examine its time-variant behaviour. A comprehensive model of the reversible and irreversible capacity degradation of the VRFB stack unit is proposed and validated. The capacity retention of the VRFB stack is simulated by being integrated within the hybrid propulsion system. Reversible degradation of the VRFB stack is precisely predicted and rehabilitated based on the predefined operational schedule, while the irreversible portion is retained until the affected components are replaced. Consequently, the advantages of the VRFB system as an on-board ESS are demonstrated through the application of a hybrid propulsion system for liner shipping with fixed routes.

  • Vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFB) have emerged as large-scale energy storage systems (ESS) due to their advantages such as low cross-contamination, long life, and flexible design. However, Hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) in the negative half-cell causes a harmful influence on the performance of the VRFB by consuming current. Moreover, HER hinders V2+/V3+ redox reaction between electrode and electrolyte by forming a bubble. To address the HER problem, carbon nanotube/graphite felt electrode (CNT/GF) with oxygen functional groups was synthesized through the hydrothermal method in the H2SO4 + HNO3 (3:1) mixed acid solution. These oxygen functional groups on the CNT/GF succeed in suppressing the HER and improving charge transfer for V2+/V3+ redox reaction. As a result, the oxygen functional group applied electrode exhibited a low overpotential of 0.395 V for V2+/V3+ redox reaction. Hence, this work could offer a new strategy to design and synthesize effective electrodes for HER suppression and improving the energy density of VRFB.

Development of Pore-filled Ion-exchange Membranes for Efficient All Vanadium Redox Flow Batteries

  • Thin pore-filled cation and anion-exchange membranes (PFCEM and PFAEMs, $t_m=25-30{\mu}m$) were prepared using a porous polymeric substrate for efficient all-vanadium redox flow battery (VRB). The electrochemical and charge-discharge performances of the membranes have been systematically investigated and compared with those of commercially available ion-exchange membranes. The pore-filled membranes were shown to have higher permselectivity as well as lower electrical resistances than those of the commercial membranes. In addition, the VRBs employing the pore-filled membranes exhibited the respectable charge-discharge performances, showing the energy efficiencies (EE) of 82.4% and 84.9% for the PFCEM and PFAEM, respectively (cf. EE = 87.2% for Nafion 1135). The results demonstrated that the pore-filled ion-exchange membranes could be successfully used in VRBs as an efficient separator by replacing expensive Nafion membrane.

다공성 전극의 압축률이 레독스흐름전지의 성능에 미치는 영향에 대한 수치해석적 연구 (Numerical Study About Compression Effect of Porous Electrodes on the Performance of Redox Flow Batteries)

  • When designing a redox flow battery system, compression of battery stack is required to prevent leakage of electrolyte and to reduce contact resistance between cell components. In addition, stack compression leads to deformation of the porous carbon electrode, which results in lower porosity and smaller cross-sectional area for electrolyte flow. In this paper, we investigate the effects of electrode compression on the cell performance by applying multi-dimensional, transient model of all-vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB). Simulation result reveals that large compression leads to greater pressure drop throughout the electrodes, which requires large pumping power to circulate electrolyte while lowered ohmic resistance results in better power capability of the battery. Also, cell compression results in imbalance between anolyte and catholyte and convective crossover of vanadium ions through the separator due to large pressure difference between negative and positive electrodes. Although it is predicted that the battery power is quickly improved due to the reduced ohmic resistance, the capacity decay of the battery is accelerated in the long term operation when the battery cell is compressed. Therefore, it is important to optimize the battery performance by taking trade-off between power and capacity when designing VRFB system.

암모니아수 처리에 따른 바나듐 레독스 흐름전지용 탄소펠트 전극의 전기화학적 특성 (Electrochemical Properties of Carbon Felt Electrode for Vanadium Redox Flow Batteries by Liquid Ammonia Treatment)

  • 본 연구에서는 바나듐 레독스 흐름전지의 효율을 향상시키고자 탄소펠트에 열산화 반응과 암모니아수 처리를 이용하여 질소가 도핑된 탄소펠트 전극을 제조하였다. 또한 제조된 탄소펠트 전극의 전기화학적 특성평가를 위하여 CV 실험 및 충/방전 실험을 실시하였다. 암모니아수 처리온도가 증가함에 따라 탄소펠트 표면의 질소 관능기가 증가함을 XPS를 통하여 확인하였으며, CV 측정 결과 암모니아수 처리된 탄소펠트는 열산화된 탄소펠트에 비하여 산화/환원의 반응성이 우수함을 확인하였다. 충/방전 실험결과 $300^{\circ}C$에서 암모니아수 처리한 탄소펠트 전극은 열산화된 탄소펠트 전극보다 에너지효율, 전압효율, 전류효율이 각각 약 6.93, 1.0, 4.5%씩 향상됨을 알 수 있었다. 이는 질소 관능기가 탄소펠트 전극과 전해질 사이의 전기화학적 성능 향상에 도움을 주었기 때문으로 사료된다.

Electrochemical Studies of Carbon Felt Electrode Modified Under Airless Conditions for Redox Flow Batteries

  • Carbon felts were prepared under various thermal conditions to improve the electrochemical properties of vanadium redox flow batteries. The number of C-O and/or C-OH functional groups on the surface of the electrodes treated under airless conditions was much larger than that of the untreated and partially oxygen-treated electrodes. The carbon felt treated under airless conditions had the lowest surface area. The overall kinetic properties of the redox reaction were greatly improved for the carbon felt treated under airless conditions; i.e., the reversibility of the anodic and cathodic reactions associated with the $VO_2{^+}/VO^{2+}$ couple became more reversible. Single-cell tests indicated that the carbon felt exhibited an excellent discharge capacity of $3.1Ah{\cdot}g^{-1}$ at $40mA{\cdot}cm^{-2}$, and the corresponding Coulombic, voltage, and energy efficiencies were 89.5%, 91.8%, and 82.2%, respectively.

  • A carbon felt electrode was prepared using ozone and ammonia sequential treatment and applied as an electrode for a vanadium redox flow battery (VRFB). The physical and electrochemical analyses demonstrate that the oxygen groups facilitate nitrogen doping in the carbon felt. Carbon felt (J5O3+NH3), which was subjected to ammonia heat treatment after ozone treatment, showed higher oxygen and nitrogen contents than carbon felt (J5NH3+O3), which was subjected to ammonia heat treatment first and then ozone treatment. From the charging/discharging of VRFB, the J5O3+NH3 carbon felt electrode showed 14.4 Ah/L discharge capacity at a current density of 150 mA /cm2, which was 15% and 33% higher than that of J5NH3+O3 and non-activated carbon felt (J5), respectively. These results show that ozone and ammonia sequential treatment is an effective carbon felt activation method to increase the performance of the vanadium redox flow battery.

  • Lithium accounts for only 0.0017% of the earth crust, and it is produced in geographically limited regions such as South America, the United States, and China. Since the first half of 2017, the price of lithium has been continuously increasing, and with the rapid adoption of electric vehicles, lithium resources are expected to be depleted in the near future. In addition, economic blocs worldwide face intensifying scenarios such as competition for technological supremacy and protectionism of domestic industries. Consequently, Korea is deepening its dependence on China for core materials and is vulnerable to the influence of the United States Inflation Reduction Act. We analyze post-lithium secondary battery technologies that rely on more earth-abundant elements to replace lithium, whose production is limited to specific regions. Specifically, we focus on the technological status and issues of sodium-ion, zinc-air, and redox-flow batteries. In addition, research trends in post-lithium secondary batteries are examined. Post-lithium secondary batteries seem promising for large-capacity energy storage systems while reducing the costs of raw materials compared with existing lithium-based technologies.

Urea를 이용한 바나듐 레독스 흐름 전지용 카본 펠트 전극 개발 (Development of Carbon Felt Electrode Using Urea for Vanadium Redox Flow Batteries)

  • 본 연구에서는 urea를 이용해 질소 도핑된 카본 펠트 전극을 제조하고 이를 바나듐 레독스 흐름 전지용 전극으로 적용하였다. Urea는 암모니아 보다 취급이 용이할 뿐 아니라 고온 열분해를 통해 $NH_2$ 라디칼이 발생하여 탄소 표면에 질소 작용기를 만들고 이는 바나듐 이온의 산화/환원 반응을 향상시키는 활성점(active site)로 작용한다. Urea로 활성화된 카본 펠트 전극은 $150mA/cm^2$의 전류 밀도에서 14.9 Ah/L의 방전 용량을 보였으며 이는 산소작용기로 활성화된 카본 펠트(OGF) 및 비활성화 카본 펠트(GF)보다 각각 23% 및 187% 더 높았다. 이러한 결과는 urea로 활성화된 카본 펠트 전극이 레독스 흐름 전지용 전극 소재로 사용될 수 있는 가능성을 보여준다.
