  • High temperature flow behaviors of AISI 4340 steel were investigated using isothermal compression tests under the temperature range from 850 to $1100^{\circ}C$ and a strain rate from 0.01 to $10s^{-1}$. The flow stress decreased with increasing compression temperature and decreasing strain rate. The dynamic softening related to the dynamic recrystallization was observed during hot deformation. The constitutive model based on Arrheniustyped equation with the Zener-Hollomon parameter was used to simulate the hot deformation behavior of AISI 4340 steel. The modification of the Zener-Hollomon parameter and lnA parameter resulted in the improvement of the calculation accuracy of the proposed constitutive model compared with the experimental flow curves. In addition, the process map of AISI 4340 steel was proposed. The instable process condition for hot deformation was predicted and its reliability was verified with the experimental observation.

  • Poly (N-vinylpyrrolidone) (PVP) groups were grafted onto a poly(3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroryvalerate) (PHBV) backbone in order to modify its properties and synthesize a novel biocompatible copolymer. The crystallization behavior of PHBV and grafted PHBV was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and polarized optical microscopy (POM). During the cooling-induced crystallization process, the crystallization temperature and the crystallization rate of the grafted PHBV decreased with increasing PVP weight fraction. On the heating scans of all grafted PHBV samples, a new crystallization exothermic peak appeared at almost the same temperature, suggesting the operation of a recrystallization process, while the melting temperature ($T_m$) and the apparent enthalpy of fusion (${\Delta}H_f$) were not affected by graft modification. During the isothermal crystallization process at the same temperature, the presence of side PVP groups decreased the spherulitic growth rate and the spherulitic band spacing with increasing PVP weight fraction in samples.

  • Thermomechanical fatigue (TMF) behavior of heat resistant austenitic stainless steel was evaluated in the temperature range from 100$^{\circ}C$ to peak temperatures of 600 to 800$^{\circ}C$; The fatigue lives under TMF conditions were plotted against the plastic strain range and the dissipated energy per cycle. In the expression of the inelastic strain range versus fatigue life, the TMF data obtained at different temperature ranges were located close to a single line with a small deviation; however, when the dissipated energy per cycle, calculated from the area of the stress-strain hysteresis loops at the half of the fatigue life, was plotted against the fatigue life, the data showed greater scattering than the TMF life against the inelastic strain range. A noticeable stress relaxation in the stress-strain hysteresis curve took place at the peak temperatures higher than 700$^{\circ}C$, but all specimens in this study exhibited cyclic hardening behavior with TMF cycles. Recrystallization occurred during the TMF cycle concurrent with the formation of fine subgrains in the recrystallized region, which is considered to cause the cyclic hardening of the steel.

  • Ti alloys are used in a wide range of applications, especially for aviation and medical purposes, because of their high specific strength and excellent corrosion properties. When subjected to various manufacturing processes, one of the most popular Ti alloys, Ti-6Al-4V, exhibits a variety of microstructural and mechanical properties that makes it an attractive lightweight metal. The purpose of this study was to analyze the microstructure and mechanical properties of Ti alloy wires. Subsequently, the microstructure and electrochemical behavior of Ti alloy bolts produced from these wires were analyzed. The Ti alloy wires are manufactured with different diameters (6.22, 7.81 mm alloys), and their microstructures are measured using electron backscatter diffraction. Recrystallization was observed to occur significantly in the 7.81 alloy than in the 6.81 alloy, and the strain distribution of 7.81 alloy is seen to be likely more uniform than 6.22 alloy. Ti alloy bolt was then forged under moderate temperature by using the 7.81 alloy. Results of the electrochemical analysis indicate that the Ti alloy bolt has excellent corrosion resistance.

  • Poly(D,L-lactide-co-glycolide) (PLGA) has been widely used as carriers in controlled release delivery systems due to its biodegradability and relatively good biocompatibility. However, Release pattern of carriers fabricated using PLGA have disadvantage an initial burst within a few days, lag time several days and then sudden release changes. To solve these problems of PLGA, we fabricated PLGA wafer including monomer. Also, drug release behavior restraint sudden burst effect using recrystallization of PLGA. Recrystallized PLGA was characterized the morphological difference by SEM and in vitro release behavior measured by HPLC. The PLGA molecular weight analyzed to recognize monomer influence during degradation process of polymer using GPC. In this study, drug release duration cut short up to three days and was eliminated the lag time based on the bulk erosion.

  • Hot restoration mechanism flow stress and stain of the Al2024 composites reinforced with 1,8,15,36, and $44{\mu}m\;SiC_p$(10 vol. %) were studied by hot torsion tests. The hot restoration mechanism of all the composites was found to be dynamic recrystallization(DRX) at $320^{\circ}C$ while that of the composites reinforced with 1 and $8{\mu}m\;SiC_p$ was found to be dynamic recovery(DRX) at $480^{\circ}C$. It was found that the Al2024 composite with $15{\mu}m\;SiC_p$ showed the highest flow stress(${\sim}$223 MPa) at $320^{\circ}C$ under a strain rate of 1.0/sec. Also the highest flow strain of the composites was obtained at $430^{\circ}C$. The com-posites reinforced with 1 and $8{\mu}m\;SiC_p$ showed lower flow stress and higher flow strain at $480^{\circ}C$ than those of the composites reinforced with 15, 36, and $44\;{\mu}m\;SiC_p$ These result were discussed in relation to the transition of the hot restoration mechanism. $DRX{\leftrightarrow}DRV$. The dependence of flow stress on strain rate and temperature was attempted to fit with the hyperbolic sine equation ($\dot{\varepsilon}=A[sinh({\alpha}{\cdot}{\sigma}_p]^n$ exp(-Q/RT)and Zener-Hollomon parameter($Z=\;\dot{\varepsilon}\;exp(Q/RT))$.

  • Silicon ion implantation was performed to LPCVD amorphous Si films and the low temperature annealing process followed with various conditions to find the optimal physical properties by studying recrystallization behavior. The uniformity of the recrystallized films was inspected by optical microscopy and for this purpose, new KOH: (IPA) : $H_2$O: $K_2$C${r_2}{O_7}$, etchant was developed. XRD and TEM results showed that the crystallites were grown as a form of dendrite with (111) preferred orientation, and the grain size was increased with dose concentration. The maximum grain size was obtained when the 3${\times}{10^{15}}$c$m^2$ implanted amorphous Si film was recrystallized at 55 $0^{\circ}C$for more than 40 hrs and at this condition the grain size was 3.2${\mu}$m.

  • Vacuum hot pressing has been used for the development of titanium metal matrix composites using foil-fiber-foil method. Heterogeneous microstructures prior to and following consolidation have been quantified, and the relations to densification behavior investigated. As shown by the results, dramatic variations of the microstructures including equiaxed $\alpha$, transformed $\beta$ and $ Widmanst\ddot{a}tten$ $\alpha$ are obtained during the process according to the fiber distributions. The dependence of microstructures on the consolidation then has been explained in terms of the change in mechanisms such as grain growth and recrystallization that occur with changing levels of inhomogeneity of deformation. Further, micro-mechanics based constitutive model enabling the evolution of density over time together with the evolutions of microstructure to be predicted has been developed. The mode developed is then implemented into finite element scheme so that practical process simulation has been carried out.

  • This study aims to mitigate the microstructural heterogeneity arising from the manufacture of magnesium alloy plates using the twin roll casting (TRC) process. Homogenization was introduced through hot rolling and heat treatment, followed by confirmation of observed changes in the microstructure. Following the TRC process, the hot rolled 2mm plate exhibited a dendritic cast structure tilted in the roll rotation direction, while central segregation were developed. This nonuniform structure and central segregation disappeared upon heat treatment, followed by recrystallization to form uniform and fine grains. Abnormal grain growth (AGG) was observed over the course of heat treatment; grains exhibiting AGG occupied up to 75% of the total area after having held the sample at 400℃ for 64 h. The formation of coarse grains was also observed during heat treatment at 340℃ over a relatively long duration, though the maximum grain size was significantly smaller than that corresponding to the heat treatment at 400℃. AGG in the 400℃ heat treatment occurred because of movement of the grain boundary, which had been fixed prior as a result of the grain boundary fixing effect of the precipitation phase. The re-dissolution of the Ca2Mg5Zn5 precipitated phase over the long duration of the high-temperature annealing process caused the surrounding grains to disappear and regrow.

  • The deformation behavior of NIMONIC 80A was studied in the high temperature range of $900{\sim}1200^{\circ}C$ and for strain rates varying between 0.02 and $20s^{-1}$ via the hot compression test. Processing maps for hot working were constructed on the basis of the power dissipation efficiency using a dynamic material model. The results showed that the strength during hot compression increased with increasing strain rate and decreasing temperature. At low strains, the processing map of NIMONIC 80A did not reveal any instability domain regardless of the strain rate and temperature. However, at high strains, the processing map exhibited an instability domain at a low strain rate of $0.2s^{-1}$ and within a temperature range of $900{\sim}960^{\circ}C$. In the instability domain, the deformed microstructure exhibited shear bands and carbide precipitation while, in the safe domain, full recrystallization occurred.
