As many functionalities such as cameras and MP3 players are converged to mobile phones, more intuitive and interesting interaction methods are essential. In this paper, we present applications and their enabling technologies for gesture interactive cell phones. They employ gesture recognition and real-time shake detection algorithm for supporting motion-based user interface and entertainment applications respectively. The gesture recognition algorithm classifies users' movement into one of predefined gestures by modeling basic components of acceleration signals and their relationships. The recognition performance is further enhanced by discriminating frequently confusing classes with support vector machines. The shake detection algorithm detects in real time the exact motion moment when the phone is shaken significantly by utilizing variance and mean of acceleration signals. The gesture interaction algorithms show reliable performance for commercialization; with 100 novice users, the average recognition rate was 96.9% on 11 gestures (digits 1-9, O, X) and users' movements were detected in real time. We have applied the motion understanding technologies to Samsung cell phones in Korean, American, Chinese and European markets since May 2005.

We propose a multi-strategic concept-spotting approach for robust spoken language understanding of conversational Korean in a hostile recognition environment such as in-car navigation and telebanking services. Our concept-spotting method adopts a partial semantic understanding strategy within a given specific domain since the method tries to directly extract predefined meaning representation slot values from spoken language inputs. In spite of partial understanding, we can efficiently acquire the necessary information to compose interesting applications because the meaning representation slots are properly designed for specific domain-oriented understanding tasks. We also propose a multi-strategic method based on this concept-spotting approach such as a voting method. We present experiments conducted to verify the feasibility of these methods using a variety of spoken Korean data.
Understanding and classification of the human's emotion play an important tasks in interacting with human and machine communication systems. This paper proposes a novel emotion recognition method by extracting facial keypoints, which is able to understand and classify the human emotion, using active Appearance Model and the proposed classification model of the facial features. The existing appearance model scheme takes an expression of variations, which is calculated by the proposed classification model according to the change of human facial expression. The proposed method classifies four basic emotions (normal, happy, sad and angry). To evaluate the performance of the proposed method, we assess the ratio of success with common datasets, and we achieve the best 93% accuracy, average 82.2% in facial emotion recognition. The results show that the proposed method effectively performed well over the emotion recognition, compared to the existing schemes.

The major cell wall components of bacteria are lipopolysaccharide, peptidoglycan, and teichoic acid. These molecules are known to trigger strong innate immune responses in the host. The molecular mechanisms by which the host recognizes the peptidoglycan of Gram-positive bacteria and amplifies this peptidoglycan recognition signals to mount an immune response remain largely unclear. Recent, elegant genetic and biochemical studies are revealing details of the molecular recognition mechanism and the signalling pathways triggered by bacterial peptidoglycan. Here we review recent progress in elucidating the molecular details of peptidoglycan recognition and its signalling pathways in insects. We also attempt to evaluate the importance of this issue for understanding innate immunity.

For the Korean language, on acoustics, it creates a different form of phonetic value not a phoneme by its own peculiar property. Therefore, the construction of extended recognition system for understanding Korean language should be created with a study of the Korean rule-based system, before it can be used as post-processing of the Korean recognition system. In this paper, text-based Korean rule-based system featuring Korean peculiar vocal sound changing rule is constructed. and based on the text-based phonetic value result of the system constructed, a preliminary phonetic value segmentation border points with non-uniform blocks are extracted in Korean isolated word speech. Through the way of merge and recognition of the non-uniform blocks between the extracted border points, recognition possibility of Korean voice as the form of the phonetic vale has been investigated.
Spoken dialog tasks incur many errors including speech recognition errors, understanding errors, and even dialog management errors. These errors create a big gap between the user's intention and the system's understanding, which eventually results in a misinterpretation. To fill in the gap, people in human-to-human dialogs try to clarify the major causes of the misunderstanding to selectively correct them. This paper presents a method of clarification techniques to human-to-machine spoken dialog systems. We viewed the clarification dialog as a two-step problem-Belief confirmation and Clarification strategy establishment. To confirm the belief, we organized the clarification process into three systematic phases. In the belief confirmation phase, we consider the overall dialog system's processes including speech recognition, language understanding and semantic slot and value pairs for clarification dialog management. A clarification expert is developed for establishing clarification dialog strategy. In addition, we proposed a new design of plugging clarification dialog module in a given expert based dialog system. The experiment results demonstrate that the error verifiers effectively catch the word and utterance-level semantic errors and the clarification experts actually increase the dialog success rate and the dialog efficiency.

With the rise of the Al wave, task-oriented dialogue systems have become one of the popular research directions in academia and industry. Currently, task-oriented dialogue systems mainly adopt pipelined form, which mainly includes natural language understanding, dialogue state decision making, dialogue state tracking and natural language generation. However, pipelining is prone to error propagation, so many task-oriented dialogue systems in the market are only for single-round dialogues. Usually single- domain dialogues have relatively accurate semantic understanding, while they tend to perform poorly on multi-domain, multi-round dialogue datasets. To solve these issues, we developed a paddle-based multi-domain task-oriented Chinese dialogue system. It is based on NEZHA-base pre-training model and CrossWOZ dataset, and uses intention recognition module, dichotomous slot recognition module and NER recognition module to do DST and generate replies based on rules. Experiments show that the dialogue system not only makes good use of the context, but also effectively addresses long-term dependencies. In our approach, the DST of dialogue tracking state is improved, and our DST can identify multiple slotted key-value pairs involved in the discourse, which eliminates the need for manual tagging and thus greatly saves manpower.
The purpose of this study is to investigate levels of mathematically gifted students' understanding of statistical samples through comparison with non-gifted students. For this purpose, rubric for understanding of samples was developed based on the students' responses to tasks: no recognition of a part of population (level 0), consideration of samples as subsets of population (level 1), consideration of samples as a quasi-proportional, small-scale version of population (level 2), recognition of the importance of unbiased samples (level 3), and recognition of the effect of random sampling (level 4). Based on the rubric, levels of each student's understanding of samples were identified. t tests were conducted to test for statistically significant differences between mathematically gifted students and non-gifted students. For both of elementary and middle school graders, the t tests show that there is a statistically significant difference between mathematically gifted students and non-gifted students. Table of frequencies of each level, however, shows that levels of mathematically gifted students' understanding of samples were not distributed at the high levels but were overlapped with levels of non-gifted students' understanding of samples.

This study conducted a questionnaire survey of 482 male and female second graders in middle schools located in Cheongju, Chungcheongbukdo. This study lays its purpose on establishing the nutrition facts labeling system by understanding eating habits and analyzing the actual state of reading nutrition facts labels and degrees of understanding them among middle school students, and helping them to engage in right food purchasing activities and through it result in developing sound eating habits by providing them with basic material to be employed to actively utilize nutrition facts for choosing and buying healthy foods. As a result of surveying regarding the actual state of reading food labels, regarding degrees of recognition of food labels, it was revealed that 91.1% of female students recognized them, while 42.1% of male students did not recognize them, indicating lower levels of recognition among the male group. Regarding reasons for not checking food labels, 49.2% indicated habitual purchasing, followed by poor contents in the label(20.2%), ununderstandable contents(17.7%), and the lower reliability of the contents(6.9%). As a result of surveying regarding the actual state of reading nutrition facts labels, in recognition of nutrition facts labels, female rather than male students showed higher degrees of recognition, and degrees of recognition were found to differ according to parents' total income and mothers' educational attainments.
Recent linguistic researches have brought into focus the relations between prosodic structures and syntactic, semantic or phonological structures. Most of them prove that prosodic information is available for understanding syntactic, semantic and discourse structures. But this result has not been integrated yet into recent Korean speech recognition or understanding systems. This study, as a part of integrating prosodic information into the speech recognition system, proposes an automatic detection technique of Korean accentual phrase boundaries by using one-stage DP, and the normalized pitch pattern. For making the normalized pitch pattern, this study proposes a method of modified normalization for Korean spoken language. For the experiment, this study employs 192 sentential speech data of 12 men's voice spoken in standard Korean, in which 720 accentual phrases are included, and 74.4% of the accentual phrase boundaries are correctly detected while 14.7% are the false detection rate.
