  • This study is to investigate experimentally the long-term deflection of concrete beams with glass fiber reinforced polymer (GFRP) reinforcing bars subjected to the sustained flexural load for periods of up to 6 months. A total of four beams were tested. All beams were designed with net span of 2,700 mm and rectangular cross-section of 200 mm width and 300 mm depth. From the test results the time-dependent deflection of concrete beams with GFRP bars was about 40 to 70% of the initial deflection. As well as this paper compares the long-term deflection calculated by 440.1R-06 design guide and that of tested beams. The comparison indicated that the calculated long-term deflection overestimate the observed long-term deflection of concrete beams with FRP rebars.

  • Splice sleeves for HD25 and HD32 rebars with yield strength 500 MPa were studied experimentally and analytically. The shapes of sleeve was examined with nonlinear finite element analyses. A total of 18 specimens were tested with test variables of rebar types, sleeve lengths, mortar compressive strengths, and rebar development lengths. Three identical specimens per each variable were tested in order to prevent any test errors. After tests, numerical studies with a nonlinear finite element method were conducted to evaluate the test results. Experimental studies with 18 specimens showed that the sleeves of this study satisfies the code requirement. It was found that the strength of mortar and the bar development length within the sleeves did not affect to the load-carrying capacity of sleeves.

  • In this study, nonlinear finite element analysis based on the Modified Compression Field Theory has been conducted to evaluate shear strength of RC walls with opening. On the analysis, reinforcement ratio within development length of rebars nearby the opening was reduced in the model in order to investigate the effect of opening on shear strength of RC shear walls. The nonlinear finite element analysis has been verified through comparison with the test result in literature. Through the verification, it was investigated that the analysis considering the development length of rebars well reflected the effect of an opening on shear strength of RC shear walls while current design provisions did not reasonably consider one.

  • The signal characteristic of radar wave on concrete decks is determined by the attenuation of the radar due to the conversion of EM(Electromagnetic) energy to thermal energy through electrical conduction, dielectric relaxation, scattering, and geometric spreading. In this study, it is found that the attenuation of radar signal received on top rebars in bare deck concrete with 2 way travel time shows a general decreasing linear trend because of its same relative permittivity and conductivity. The radar signal after depth-normalization, can then be interpreted as being principally influenced by the content of chlorides penetrating cover concrete, which caused corrosion of rebars in bridge decks.

  • Companies that want to improve their manufacturing processes have recently introduced the smart factory, which is particularly noticeable. The ultimate goal is to maximize the area of the smart factory that performs the process of the production facility completely with minimal manual control and to minimize errors of reasoning. This research is a part of a project for unmanned production, management, packaging, and delivery management and the detection of the start point of rebars to perform the automatic calibration of the rollers through the tracking of the automated facilities of unmanned production. It must meet the requirement to accurately track the position from the start point to the end point. In order to improve the tracking performance, it is important to set the accurate start point. However, the probability of tracking errors is high depending on environments such as illumination and dust through the conventional time-based detection method. In this paper, we propose a starting point detection method using the average brightness change of high speed IR camera to reduce the errors according to the environments, As a result, its performance is improved by more than 15%.

  • A new clamped mechanical splice system was proposed to develop structural performance and constructability for precast concrete connections. The proposed mechanical splice resists external loading immediately after the engagement. The mechanical splices applicable for both large-scale rebars for plants and small-scale rebars for buildings were developed with the same design concept. Quasi-static lateral cyclic loading tests were conducted with reinforced and precast concrete members to verify the seismic performance. Also, shaking table tests with three types of seismic wave excitation, 1) random wave with white noise, 2) the 2016 Gyeongju earthquake, and 3) the 1999 Chi-Chi earthquake, were conducted to confirm the dynamic performance. All tests were performed with real-scale concrete specimens. Sensors measured the lateral load, acceleration, displacement, crack pattern, and secant system stiffness, and energy dissipation was determined by lateral load-displacement relation. As a result, the precast specimen provided the emulative performance with RC. In the shaking table tests, PC frames' maximum acceleration and displacement response were amplified 1.57 - 2.85 and 2.20 - 2.92 times compared to the ground motions. The precast specimens utilizing clamped mechanical splice showed ductile behavior with energy dissipation capacity against strong motion earthquakes.

  • This study focused on the development of surface deformations of GFRP rebars with a better bond characteristic for reinforcing concrete, and simultaneously, of GFRP rebars with more simple and economic production process. This research paper describes a development and bond performance of GFRP rebar with molded deformations, which is composed of polymer resin and milled glass fiber. To determine proper mix ration of milled fibers, material test of hardened epoxy and pullout tests of GFRP rebar with various mix ratio were conducted. The test results indicate that the new strategy of using a mixture of epoxy resin and milled fiber could be successfully applied to a surface structure of GFRP rebar to enhance bond with concrete. The bearing resistance of the ribs was further enhanced by the milled fibers at mechanical and environmental loading state.

  • The objective of this study is to verify whether the composite action is sufficiently strong to withstand at the interface and the structural behavior of LB-DECK panel with field concrete slab strengthened with main reinforcing bars. Static and fatigue tests are performed for LB-DECK panels with varied shapes and amounts of rebars, and the results are compared with those of field concrete panel(FCP). The test results indicate that the LB-DECK panel with 1.5 times of more rebars inside significantly increase the overall stiffness. LB-DECK penel usually shows on average 52.1 percent of improved stiffness compared with the FCP. The fatigue test results also show that the LB-DECK panel can withstand two-million cycles of repeated loads without any damage.

  • Construction of the coping of reinforced concrete piers is very complicated due to heavy density of rebars and usually exposed to negligent accident. To correct these problems, coping is pre-assembled at the ground in pier coping pre-assembly method and recently a new method of rebar assembling has proposed in this study. For safety assessment of proposed method, small scale model test of railway bridge(PSC U-GIRDER T-shaped pier) was carried out and it was verified that crack pattern, failure mechanism and load resistance capacity are similar between existing method and proposed method. And using analytical approach, linear and non-linear finite element analysis was performed. As a result, it was checked that proposed method has an acceptable structural safety.

  • The mechanical properties of glass fiber reinforced polymer reinforcing bars(rebar) in various environment conditions such as moisture, chloride, alkali and freeze-thaw actions at temperature ranging from room temperature($25^{\circ}C$) to high temperature of up to $80^{\circ}C$ have been studied. The test results indicated that tensile strength and interfacial shear strength of GFRP bar were decreased with the increasing of temperature and holding time of each environment condition. The degradation in alkali environment. was more serious than those in the other environments.
