  • To confirm the applicability of the water gas shift reaction for the production of high purity hydrogen for petroleum cokes, an unutilized low grade resource, Cu/ZnO/MgO/Al2O3 (CZMA), catalyst was prepared using the co-precipitation method. The prepared catalyst was analyzed using BET and H2-TPR. Catalyst reactivity tests were compared and analyzed in two cases: a single LTS reaction from syngas containing a high concentration of CO, and an LTS reaction immediately after the syngas passed through a HTS reaction without condensation of steam. Reaction characteristics in accordance with steam/CO ratio, flow rate, and temperature were confirmed under both conditions. When the converted low concentration of CO and steam were immediately injected into the LTS, the CO conversion was rather low in most conditions despite the presence of large amounts of steam. In addition, because the influence of the steam/CO ratio, temperature, and flow rate was significant, additional analysis was required to determine the optimal operating conditions. Meanwhile, carbon deposition or activity degradation of the catalyst did not appear under high CO concentration, and high CO conversion was exhibited in most cases. In conclusion, it was confirmed that when the Cu/ZnO/MgO/Al2O3 catalyst and the appropriate operating conditions were applied to the syngas composition containing a high concentration of CO, the high concentration of CO could be converted in sufficient amounts into CO2 by applying a single LTS reaction.

  • The electrocatalytic reduction of NAD$^{+}$ using diaphorase was studied. methyl viologen (MV$^{2+}$) mediator between an electrode and the enzyme. Steady-state currents could be obtained under the conditions of slow scan rate, low MV$^{2+}$concentration, and high NAD$^{+}$ concentration as the electrode reaction was converted to an electrochemical-catalytic (EC') reaction. The biomecular rate constant for the reaction of the reduced methyl viologen with the oxidized diaphorase was estimated as 7.5$\times$10$^3$M$^{-1}$ s$^{-1}$ from the slope of the current versus [MV$^{2+}$] plot. And the optimal concentrations of diaphorase, MV$^{2+}$ and NAD$^{+}$ in the mediated electrocatalytic reduction of NAD$^{+}$ were decided by applying the cyclic voltammetry. The optimal concentrations of the species were obtained by finding the conditions which gave the highest and steady-state current at a gold-amalgam electrode. The highest and steady-state catalytic current was achieved under the conditions of 1.5 U/ml diaphorase, 0.2 mM MV$^{2+}$, and 4.8 mM NAD$^{+}$ at the scan rate of 2 mV s$^{-1}$ , suggesting that the rate of the electrocatalytic reation is the higest under the former conditions. The electrochemical procedure under the conditions of 1.5 U/ml diaphorase,0.2 mM MV$^{2+}$, and 4.8 mM NAD$^{+}$ was used favorably to drive an enzymatic reduction of pyruvate to D-lactate.

  • Mackinawite (FeS), as a ubiquitous reduced iron mineral, is known as a key controller of redox reactions in anaerobic subsurface environment. The reaction of FeS with redox-sensitive toxic element such as arsenic is substantially affected by pH conditions of the given environments. In this study, the interaction of As(V) with FeS was studied under strict anaerobic conditions with various pH conditions. The pH-dependent arsenic removal tests were conducted under wide ranges of pH conditions and X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) was applied to investigate the reaction mechanisms under pH 5, 7, and 9. The removal efficiency of FeS for As(V) showed the higher removal of As(V) under low pH conditions and its removal efficiency decreased with increasing pH, and no As(V) reduction was observed in 1 g/L FeS solution. However, XAS analysis indicated the reduction of As(V) to As(III) occurred during reaction between FeS and As(V). The reduced form of As(III) was particularly identified as an arsenic sulfide mineral (As2S3) in all pH conditions (pH 5, 7, and 9). As2S3 precipitation was more pronounced in pH 5 where the solubility of FeS is higher than in other pH conditions. The linear combination fitting results of XAS demonstrated that As(V) removal mechanism is concerted processes of As2S3 precipitation and surface complexation of both arsenic species.

  • We evaluated the optimal conditions for fluidization of nickel oxide (NiO) and its reduction into high-purity Ni during hydrogen reduction in a laboratory-scale fluidized bed reactor. A comparative study was performed through structural shape analysis using scanning electron microscopy (SEM); variance in pressure drop, minimum fluidization velocity, terminal velocity, reduction rate, and mass loss were assessed at temperatures ranging from 400 to $600^{\circ}C$ and at 20, 40, and 60 min in reaction time. We estimated the sample weight with most active fluidization to be 200 g based on the bed diameter of the fluidized bed reactor and height of the stocked material. The optimal conditions for NiO hydrogen reduction were found to be height of sample H to the internal fluidized bed reactor diameter D was H/D=1, reaction temperature of $550^{\circ}C$, reaction time of 60 min, superficial gas velocity of 0.011 m/s, and pressure drop of 77 Pa during fluidization. We determined the best operating conditions for the NiO hydrogen reduction process based on these findings.

  • This study is purposed to analyze thermodynamic properties on the hydrogen production by dimethyl ether steam reforming. Various reaction conditions of temperatures (300~1500 K), feed compositions (steam/carbon = 1~7), and pressures (1, 5, 10 atm) were applied to investigate the effects of the reaction conditions on the thermodynamic properties of dimethyl ether steam reforming. An endothermic steam reforming competed with an exothermic water gas shift reaction and an exothermic methanation within the applied reaction condition. Hydrogen production was initiated at the temperature of 400 K and the production rate was promoted at temperatures exceeding 550 K. An increase of steam to carbon ratio (S/C) in feed mixture over 1.5 resulted in the increase of the water gas shift reaction, which lowered the formation of carbon monoxide. The maximum hydrogen yield with minimizing loss of thermodynamic conversion efficiency was achieved at the reaction conditions of a temperature of 900 K and a steam to carbon ratio of 3.0.

  • A microfluidic reactor with computer-controlled programmable isocratic pumps and online detectors is employed as a combinatorial synthesis system to synthesize and analyze materials for fabricating CdSe quantum dots for various applications. Four reaction condition parameters, namely, the reaction temperature, reaction time, Cd/Se compositional ratio, and precursor concentration, are combined in synthesis condition sets, and the size of the synthesized CdSe quantum dots is determined for each condition. The average time corresponding to each reaction condition for obtaining the ultraviolet-visible absorbance and photoluminescence spectra is approximately 10 min. Using the data from the combinatorial synthesis system, the effects of the reaction conditions on the synthesized CdSe quantum dots are determined. Further, the data is used to determine the relationships between the reaction conditions and the CdSe particle size. This method should aid in determining and selecting the optimal conditions for synthesizing nanoparticles for diverse applications.

  • Chitosan is normally acylated and subsequently conjugated with drugs for biomedical applications. This study examined the relationship between the succinylation and gelation behaviors of glycol chitosan. Glycol chitosan was acylated with succinic anhydride under a wide variety of reaction conditions, such as different molar ratios of succinic anhydride to glucosamine, different methanol content in the reaction media, and different reaction temperatures. Among these reaction parameters, the methanol content in the solvent played an important role in determining the regioseletive succinylating site. N-succinylation and N-N cross-linking occurred regardless of the reaction conditions. However, O-succinylation was observed under specific conditions, i.e. a methanol content> 0.6 (v/v) and a reaction temperature> $25^{\circ}C$. O-succinylation accelerated the N-O cross-linking of glycol chitosan, and led to gelation. The N-succinylated glycol chitosans were water-soluble, whereas the N-and O-succinylated glycol chitosans fonned a gel. These physico-chemical structural differences in the succinylated glycol chitosans would definitely influence subsequent drug-conjugation reactions and consequently the drug loading and release kinetics.

  • Several physiological components containing a secondary amino group were capable of reacting sodium nitroprusside to form potentially carcinogenic nitrosamines under physiological conditions (pH 7.3, 37). In each case the products were identical to those produced upon reaction with nitrous acid at much lower pH values. Reaction rates measured with proline were shown to reflect a first order dependence on both amine and nitroprusside concentrations. The strong influences of pH on the reactions of sodium nitro prusside with amines were also observed. These results show sodium nitroprusside could be a very potent nitrosation agent under physiological conditions.
