Numerous experimental investigations on metallic materials and solid polymers have shown that relaxation behavior is nonlinearly dependent on prior strain rate. The stress drops in a constant time interval nonlinearly increase with an increase of prior strain rate. And the relaxed stress associated with the fastest prior strain rate has the smallest stress magnitude at the end of relaxation periods. This paper deals with the performance of three classes of unified constitutive models in predicting the characteristic behaviors of relaxation. The three classes of models are categorized by a rate sensitivity of kinematic hardening rule. The first class uses rate-independent kinematic hardening rule that includes the competing effect of strain hardening and dynamic recovery. In the second class, a stress rate term is incorporated into the rate-independent kinematic hardening rule. The final one uses a rate-dependent format of kinematic hardening rule.
This paper is concerned with the empirical flow stress constitutive equation of steel sheets for an auto-body with the variation of temperature and strain rate. In order to represent the strain rate and temperature dependent behavior of the flow stress at the intermediate strain rates accurately, an empirical hardening equation is suggested by modifying the well-known Khan-Huang-Liang model. The temperature and strain rate dependent sensitivity of the flow stress at the intermediate strain rate is considered in the hardening equation by coupling the strain, the strain rate and the temperature. The hardening equation suggested gives good correlation with experimental results at various intermediate strain rates and temperatures. In order to verify the effectiveness and accuracy of the suggested model quantitatively, the standard deviation of the fitted result from the experimental one is compared with those of the other two well-known empirical constitutive models such as the Johnson-Cook and the Khan-Huang-Liang models. The comparison demonstrates that the suggested model gives relatively well description of experimental results at various strain rates and temperatures.

The effect of the material hardening model of the canister on a finite element vertical cask drop simulation is investigated for the strain-based acceptance evaluation. Three different hardening models are considered in this paper: the isotropic hardening model, the strain rate-dependent Johnson-Cook (J-C) hardening model, and the modified J-C model which are believed to be the most accurate. By comparing the results using the modified J-C model, it is found that the use of the J-C model provides similar or larger stresses and strains depending on the magnitudes of the strain and strain rate. The use of the isotropic hardening model always yields larger stresses and strains. For the strain-based acceptance evaluation, the use of the isotropic hardening model can produce highly conservative assessment results. The use of the J-C model, however, produces satisfactory results.
In order to predict failure behavior of advanced high-strength steel sheets (AHSS) in hole expansion tests, damage model was developed considering surface condition sensitivity (with specimens prepared by milling and punching: 340R, TRIP590, TWIP940). To account for the micro-damage initiation and evolution as well as macro-crack formation, the stress triaxiality dependent fracture criterion and rate-dependent hardening and ultimate softening behavior were characterized by performing numerical simulations and experiments for the simple tension and V-notch tests. The developed damage model and the characterized mechanical property were incorporated into the FE program ABAQUS/Explicit to perform hole expansion simulations, which showed good agreement with experiments.
It is difficult to predict material behavior of forming process because the plastic instable flow phenomenon happens in practical forming process I. e. upsetting backward extrusion piercing indentation. In view of the direct relationship between instable material flow and quality defects of the products we should find out their phenomena, In this study we introduced the plastic spin and the kinematic hardening considering the kinematic hardening constitutive equation for rate-dependent material. Also analysis of upset forging is carried out using the rigid plastic FEM with Al7075
Generally, the structural material shows rate dependent behaviors, which require to constitute different strain-stress relations according to strain rates. Conventional rate- independent constitutive equations used in general purpose finite analysis programs are inadequate for dynamic finite strain problems. In this paper, a rate dependent constitutive equation for elastic-plastic material was developed. The plastic stretch rate was modeled based on slip model with dislocation velocity and density so that there is no yielding condition, and no loading conditions. Non-linear hardening rule was also introduced for finite strain. Material constants of present constitutive equation were determined by experimental data of mild steel. The constitutive equation was applied to uniaxile tension. It was appeared that the present constitutive equation well simulates rate dependent behaviors of mild steel.
In the current study, a rate-dependent crystal plasticity finite element method (CPFEM) was used to simulate flow stress behavior and texture evolution of a body-centered cubic (BCC) crystalline material during plastic deformation at room temperature. To account for crystallographic slip and rotation, a rate-dependent crystal constitutive law with a hardening model was incorporated into an in-house finite element program, CAMPform3D. Microstructural heterogeneity and anisotropy were handled by assigning a crystallographic orientation to each integration point of the element and determining the stiffness matrix of the individual crystal. Uniaxial tensile tests of single crystals with different crystallographic orientations were simulated to determine the material parameters in the hardening model. The texture evolution during four different deformation modes - uniaxial tension, uniaxial compression, channel die compression, and simple shear deformation - was investigated based on the comparison with experimental data available in the literature.
The crashworthiness of vehicles with finite element methods depends on the geometry modeling and the material properties. The vehicle body structures are generally composed of various members such as frames, stamped panels and deep-drawn parts from sheet metals. In order to ensure the impact characteristics of auto-body structures, the dynamic behavior of sheet metals must be examined to provide the appropriate constitutive relation. In this paper, high strain-rate tensile tests have been carried out with a tension type split Hopkinson bar apparatus specially designed for sheet metals. Experimental results from both static and dynamic tests with the tension split Hopkinson bar apparatus are interpolated to construct the Johnson-Cook and a modified Johnson-Cook equation as the constitutive relation, that should be applied to simulation of the dynamic behavior of auto-body structures. Simulation of auto-body structures has been carried out with an elasto-plastic finite element method with explicit time integration. The stress integration scheme with the plastic predictor-elastic corrector method is adopted in order to accurately keep track of the stress-strain relation for the rate-dependent model accurately. The crashworthiness of the structure with quasi-static constitutive relation is compared to the one with the rate-dependent constitutive model. Numerical simulation has been carried out for frontal frames and a hood of an automobile. Deformed shapes and the Impact energy absorption of the structure are investigated with the variation of the strain rate.
Uniaxial displacement controlled tests were performed on annealed Type 304 stainless steel at room temperature. A servo-controlled testing machine and strain measurement on the gage length were employed to measure the response to a given input. The test results exhibit that the flow stress increases nonlinearly with the strain rate and the relaxed stress at the end of the relaxation periods depends strongly on the strain rate preceding the relaxation test. The rate-dependent inelastic deformation behavior is simulated using a new unified viscoplasticity model that has the rate-dependent format of nonlinear kinematic hardening rule, which plays a key role in modeling the rate dependence of relaxation behavior. The model does not employ yield or loading/unloading criteria and consists of a flow law and the evolution laws of two tensor and one scalar-valued state variables.
The importance of the role of plastic spin in the rate-dependent response of materials at large deformations is the main objective of this work. After a brief presentation of a general consitutive framework for visco-rigid plasticity at large strains an isotropic/kinematic hardening and a visco-rigid plastic model are used to analyze the stress-strain response under simple shear. A clear understanding of the role of plastic spin is achieved by obtaining numerical analyzed results for different stress values in which the plastic spin consititutive parameters interrelaste with the strain rate and other more conventional model constants, Especially this paper is concerned with introducing behaviors of Al7075
