  • A study of pulmonary diseases in the slaughtered cattle (n = 125) of Mymensingh town was conducted to study pathological findings using the standard methods from September 2001 through April 2002. The pulmonary lesions observed in this study included congestion, emphysema, anthracosis, pleuritis abscess and hemorrhage. The histopathological findings of congestion were characterized by hemorrhage, a large number of leukocytes infiltration in the lumen of the alveoli, bronchitis, bronchiolitis, proliferation of fibrous connective tissue and hyperplasia of bronchiolar epithelia. Histopathologically, emphysema was identified by the distended alveoli with thin and atrophied alveolar walls. In anthracosis, carbon particles were found in stroma and alveolar lumen. In pleuritic lesions, there was a proliferation of fibrous connective tissue along with the infiltration of mononuclear reactive cells. Abscesses were characteristic of the accumulation of neutrophils surrounded by immature fibroblasts forming a capsule like structure.

  • Purification and characterization of intracellular cellulase produced by A. oryzae ITCC-4857.01 are reported. The enzyme was purified by ion-exchange chromatography using DEAE-cellulose followed by Gel filtration. The purification achieved was 41 fold from the crude extract with yield of 27%. The purified enzyme showed single band on poly acrylamide gel. The molecular weight as determined by SDS-PAGE and gel filtration was 38 KDa and 38.6 KDa respectively and contained only one subunit. The enzyme is glycoprotien as nature and contained 0.67% neutral sugar. The apparent Km value of the enzyme against cellulose was 0.83%. The enzyme showed the highest relative ativities on CMC followed by avicel, salicin and filter paper. The optimum pH of activity was 5.5 and very slight activity was observed at or above pH 7.5 as well as bellow pH 3.5. The optimum tempreture of the activity was $45^{\circ}C$ and the highest activity was exhibited in 35 to $45^{\circ}C$. The enzyme lost their activities almost completely (95${\sim}$100%) at $80^{\circ}C$ or above and as well as bellow $25^{\circ}C$.

  • Physical layer security (PLS) can improve the security of both terrestrial and nonterrestrial wireless communication networks. This study proposes a simplified framework for nonterrestrial cyclic prefixed orthogonal variable spreading factor (OVSF)-encoded multiple-input and multiple-output nonorthogonal multiple access (NOMA) systems to ensure complete network security. Various useful methods are implemented, where both improved sine map and multiple parameter-weighted-type fractional Fourier transform encryption schemes are combined to investigate the effects of hybrid PLS. In addition, OVSF coding with power domain NOMA for multi-user interference reduction and peak-toaverage power ratio (PAPR) reduction is introduced. The performance of $\frac{1}{2}$-rated convolutional, turbo, and repeat and accumulate channel coding with regularized zero-forcing signal detection for forward error correction and improved bit error rate (BER) are also investigated. Simulation results ratify the pertinence of the proposed system in terms of PLS and BER performance improvement with reasonable PAPR.

  • Purpose: The objective of this study is to evaluate the fringe benefits provided by the entrepreneurs in BSCIC (Bangladesh Small and Cottage Industries Corporation) industrial estates in light of the relevant labor laws of Bangladesh. Research question: Fringe benefits are one of the major factors in compensation that play a vital role in employee satisfaction. However, the issue has yet to be taken into consideration in the industrial units. So, the question arises: what is the present condition of employee fringe benefits in industrial estates? Research design, data, and methods: To conduct this mixed-methods research, a total of 222 respondents were selected randomly from employees and entrepreneurs. Two sets of self-administered questionnaires and KIIs were used to collect primary data, while SPSS was used to analyze the data. Major findings and conclusions: The study shows that the conditions of leave and holidays do not comply with labor laws. Further, aspects of maternity leaves, disability/death benefits, retirement benefits, and other financial and non-financial benefits are found not to be at a satisfactory level and do not comply with the existing labor laws. However, the benefits relating to environmental issues are found to be satisfactory. It is expected that the study findings will contribute to the existing literature related to fringe benefits and will help stakeholders and policymakers in formulating and monitoring compensation packages.

  • We investigate the wave properties for isothermal plasma state around to the de Sitter black hole's horizon using 3+1 split of spacetime. The corresponding Fourier analyzed perturbed perfect GRMHD equations are used to obtain the complex dispersion relations. We obtain the real values of the wave number k, from these relations, which are used to evaluate the quantities like phase and group velocities etc. These have been analyzed graphically in the neighborhood of the horizon.

  • A seroprevalence study of small ruminant brucellosis was conducted in sheep and goat rearing selected areas of Mymensingh district and Dhaka district, Bangladesh, from March, 2005 to May, 2006. Sera from 62 sheep and 300 goats were tested by rose bengal plate test (RBPT), plate agglutination test (PAT), tube agglutination test (TAT) and mercaptoethanol test (MET). Out of the 62 sera tested 3.25% (n = 2) were positive to RBT, PAT and TAT and 4.84% (n = 3) were positive MET. In case of 300 goats, 1.67% (n = 5) were positive to RBT and PAT, 2% (n = 6) were positive to TAT and 2.33% (n = 7) were positive to MET. This investigation is the first of its type to be performed in small ruminants in Bangladesh. Higher prevalence rate (8.0 %) was found in BAU nutrition farm in case of sheep and 10 % in Bangladesh Agricultural University (BAU) Veterinary Clinic in case of goat while lower prevalence (0.0 %) was recorded in Pharmacology project and BAU adjacent villages in case of sheep and (0.0 %) in Dhamrai upazila in case of goats respectively. Brucella antibodies were more prevalent in sheep (8.84 %) than in goat (2.33 %).

  • A cross-sectional survey was undertaken to identify risk factors and clinical signs associated with parasitic helminth infections of cattle in Mymensignh district of Bangladesh. A nonrandom convenience sampling method was used to select 138 animals from 40 farmers/herds. The eggs per gram of faeces (epg) for nematodes and trematodes were determined by McMaster and Stoll's methods respectively. Animal-level and herd-level data were recorded by means of a questionnaire. Multi-collinearity amongst explanatory variables were assessed using $2{\times}2{\times}\;X^2$ test and one variable in a pair was dropped if $P{\leq}0.05$ formultiple logistic regression models. Association study between outcome and explanatory variables was conducted using classification tree, random forests and multiple logistic regression. A positive epg was considered as infected. Analyses were performed using $STATA^{(R)}$, version 8.0/Intercooled and $R^{(R)}$, Version 2.3.0. Seventy eight percent of the cattle were found to be infected with at least one type of helminth. Twenty four pairs of combinations of explanatory variables showed significant associations. Male animals (OR=3.3, P=.006, 95% CI=1.4, 7.7) were associated with significantly increased prevalence of nematode infection. Female cattle of the study area are mostly cross-breed, kept indoor, fed relatively good diet and not used for draught purpose. Males are used for draught purpose thereby more exposed to nematode infective stage and provided with relatively poor diet. So stressed male cattle may become more susceptible to nematode infection. All of the three statistical techniques selected gender and lumen motility as most important variables in association with nematode infection in cattle. The result of this survey can only be extrapolated to the periurban cattle population of traditional management system.
