Quantifying Rail Travel Demand Changes using Observed Transport Data (수송실적자료를 이용한 철도교통 수요변화 추정 연구)

  • Although the amount of travel demand is a critical factor in a benefit-cost (B/C) analysis of railway investment, the travel demand changes especially for induced demand have not been considered. Therefore, the basic study of how to estimate travel demand changes after railway investment is worth investigating. This study reviews the methodologies for estimating diverted and induced demand generated after railway investment, and proposes appropriate approaches that will help railway planners to practically apply them in a case study. Further, the research stimulates the needs of consideration of the travel demand changes in the feasibility studies of railway planning.

  • Even though we usually analyze logistic market based on confined railway logistics, but this study would like to judge what is potential demand transferable to railway goods through accurate analysis of railway sharing rates by the analysis of origin and destination of each item in total freight transportation market. Accordingly, by analyzing each items transferable to railway, excluding items stuck to original market, this study wants to choose some major items which are expected to lasting demand and activate railway logistics plan by focusing on major items for marketing strategy.

  • This paper introduces how to adopt the X-12-ARIMA to decompose the railway passenger demand of the Korea National Railroad Especially, selecting on proper filters is focused. The trend filter is identical to the low pass filter in the signal Processing field, and so the seasonal filter is to band pass filter too. Some considerations, selecting a filter, are provided from the view-point of the spectrum analysis. The technique introduced in this paper will be adopted to the project that is to develope the forecasting system of Korea railway passenger demand which is a part of the high speed rail information system.

  • Railway passenger demand forecasts may be used directly, or as inputs to other optimization model which is use the demand forecasts to produce estimates of other activities. The optimization models require demand forecasts at the most detailed level. In this environment exponential smoothing forecasting methods such as Holt-Winters are appropriate because it is simple and inexpensive in terms of computation. There are several initialization methods for Holt-Winters Model. The purpose of this paper is to compare the initialization methods for Holt-Winters model.

  • Railway schedule is periodically modified so that it could yield more profit by means of adjusting the schedule to demand. Most of related works are applicable under the given demand, but did not deal with dynamic relation between demand and schedule. To our knowledge, the methodology considering the relation is only the profitability evaluation model developed by SNCF. Our study suggests how to adjust the schedule to demand and therefore obtain more benefits using the profitability evaluation model.

  • Accurate demand estimating process in the construction of urban railway is very important, and precise validation is required. Existing model formula in the 4 phase model is limited in the estimation of the demand the administrative boundary-based zone system reflects no spatial railway demand characteristics around railway stations. The purpose of this study is improving the accuracy of urban rail demand estimation through segmentations of station influence areas and modal split characteristics within the areas. According to the case analysis, it is possible to set up the ststion influence area with a radius of 500m in the urban region and 1,000m in the suburban. And eastablishing proper segmentations of the ststion influence area shows more accurate results to the real demand of railway stations.

  • This paper presents an approximate model for computing the peak demand power in a metro railway system. The peak demand of substations can be calculated using the current vector iteration method. But the existing method requires many repeated calculations to determine the peak demand power, which makes it difficult to apply to the real-time peak power control problem. In this paper, we assume that none of the conditions vary except source impedance and make an approximate model for rapid calculation based on changes in the impedance of the power substation. The proposed model result is approximately the same as the existing model, which is demonstrated through simulation.

  • A comprehensive review for the selection of urban rail vehicle systems that best suit Gimpo railway line is taking place with consideration of the project area characteristics in light of line planning, passenger demand, supply of rolling stock, and railway construction and operation. Various aspects of vehicle systems including passenger demand on concerned lines, regional characteristics, vehicle types, and railway construction and operational settings should be taken into consideration. In addition, request for the introduction of customized vehicle systems reflecting the convenience of transit users such as wide and hospitable inner space, low noise, flexible operation of 2 to 4 car train-set and eye catching slim bridge piers is increasing. A study on alternatives to place an order to opt for optimum rolling stock systems considering line characteristics of Gimpo City's urban railway and future passenger demand while meeting the needs of Gimpo City has been conducted.
