In this work, a Gaussian Process (Kriging) approach is proposed to provide efficient dose mapping for complex radiation fields using limited number of responses. Given a few response measurements (or simulation data points), the proposed approach can help the analyst in completing a map of the radiation dose field with a 95% confidence interval, efficiently. Two case studies are used to validate the proposed approach. The First case study is based on experimental dose measurements to build the dose map in a radiation field induced by a D-D neutron generator. The second, is a simulation case study where the proposed approach is used to mimic Monte Carlo dose predictions in the radiation field using a limited number of MCNP simulations. Given the low computational cost of constructing Gaussian Process (GP) models, results indicate that the GP model can reasonably map the dose in the radiation field given a limited number of data measurements. Both case studies are performed on the nuclear engineering radiation laboratories at the University of Sharjah.

The aim of this study is to investigate the characteristics of portal dosimetry in comparison with the MapCHECK2 measurments. In this study, a total of 65 treatment plans including both volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) and intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) were retrospectively selected and analyzed (45 VMAT plans and 20 IMRT plans). A total of 4 types of linac models (VitalBeam, Trilogy, Clinac 21EXS, and Clianc iX) were used for the comparison between portal dosimetry and the MapCHECK2 measurements. The VMAT plans were delivered with two VitalBeam linacs (VitalBeam1 and VitalBeam2) and one Trilogy while the IMRT plans were delivered with one Clinac 21EXS and one Clinacl iX. The global gamma passing rates of portal dosimetry and the MapCHECK2 measurements were analyzed with a gamma criterion of 3%/3 mm for IMRT while those were analyzed with a gamma criterion of 2%/2 mm for VMAT. Spearman's correlation coefficients (r) were calculated between the gamma passing rates of portal dosimetry and those of the MapCHECK2 measurements. For VMAT, the gamma passing rates of portal dosimetry with the VitalBeam1, VitalBeam2, and Trilogy were $97.3%{\pm}3.5%$, $97.1%{\pm}3.4%$, and $97.5%{\pm}1.9%$, respectively. Those of the MapCHECK2 measurements were $96.8%{\pm}2.5%$, $96.3%{\pm}2.7%$, and $97.4%{\pm}1.3%$, respectively. For IMRT, the gamma passing rates of portal dosimetry with Clinac 21EXS and Clinac iX were $99.7%{\pm}0.3%$ and $99.8%{\pm}0.2%$, respectively. Those of the MapCHECK2 measurements were $96.5%{\pm}3.3%$ and $97.7%{\pm}3.2%$, respectively. Except for the result with the Trilogy, no correlations were observed between the gamma passing rates of portal dosimetry and those of the MapCHECK2 measurements. Therefore, both the MapCHECK2 measurements and portal dosimetry can be used as an alternative to each other for patient-specific QA for both IMRT and VMAT.
Since the horizontal global radiation and cloud cover are a main factor for designing any solar photovoltaic system, it is necessary to evaluate its characteristics all over the country. The work presented here are the investigation of horizontal global radiation and cloud cover in Korea. The data utilized in the investigation consist of horizontal global radiation and cloud cover collected for 27 years(1982. 12~2008. 12) at measuring stations across the country. The analysis shows that the annual-average daily horizontal global radiation is $3.61\;kWh/m^2$ and the annual-average daily cloud cover is 5.1 in Korea. We also constructed the contour map of cloud cover in Korea by interpolating actually measured data across the country.
In nuclear-related facilities, such as nuclear power plants, research reactors, accelerators, and nuclear waste storage sites, radiation detection, and mapping are required to prevent radiation overexposure. Sensor network systems consisting of radiation sensor interfaces and wxireless communication units have become promising tools that can be used for data collection of radiation detection that can in turn be used to draw a radiation map. During data collection, malfunctions in some of the sensors can occasionally occur due to radiation effects, physical damage, network defects, sensor loss, or other reasons. This paper proposes a reproduction strategy for radiation maps using a U-net model to compensate for the loss of radiation detection data. To perform machine learning and verification, 1,561 simulations and 417 measured data of a sensor network were performed. The reproduction results show an accuracy of over 90%. The proposed strategy can offer an effective method that can be used to resolve the data loss problem for conventional sensor network systems and will specifically contribute to making initial responses with preserved data and without the high cost of radiation leak accidents at nuclear facilities.
This study examines the future variability of surface wind speed and solar radiation based on climate change scenario over the Korean Peninsula. Climate change scenarios used in this study are RCP 4.5 and 8.5 with a 12.5 km horizontal resolution. Climate change scenario RCP 4.5 and 8.5 reproduce the general features of wind speed over the Korean Peninsula, such as strong wind speed during spring and winter and weak wind speed during summer. When compared with the values of wind speed and solar radiation of the future, they are expected to decrease current wind and solar resource map. Comparing the resource maps using RCP 4.5 and 8.5 scenarios, wind speed and solar radiation decrease with increasing greenhouse gas concentration. Meteorological resource maps of future wind and solar radiation should be improved with high resolution for the industrial application.
The solar and meteorological resources map is calculated using by one-layer solar radiation model (GWNU model), satellites data and numerical model output on the Korean peninsula. The Meteorological input data to perform the GWNU model are retrieved aerosol optical thickness from MODIS (TERA/AQUA), total ozone amount from OMI (AURA), cloud fraction from geostationary satellites (MTSAT-1R) and temperature, pressure and total precipitable water from output of RDAPS (Regional Data Assimilation and Prediction System) and KLAPS (Korea Local Analysis and Prediction System) model operated by KMA (Korea Meteorological Administration). The model is carried out every hour using by the meteorological data (total ozone amount, aerosol optical thickness, temperature, pressure and cloud amount) and the basic data (surface albedo and DEM). And the result is analyzed the distribution in time and space and validated with 22 meteorological solar observations. The solar resources map is used to the solar energy-related industries and assessment of the potential resources for solar plant. The National Institute of Meteorological Research in KMA released $4km{\times}4km$ solar map in 2008 and updated solar map with $1km{\times}1km$ resolution and topological effect in 2010. The meteorological resources map homepage (http://www.greenmap.go.kr) is provided the various information and result for the meteorological-solar resources map.

Since the horizontal global radiation and hours of bright sunshine are a main factor for designing photovoltaic system, it is necessary to evaluate its characteristics all over the country. The work presented here are the investigation of horizontal global radiation and hours of bright sunshine in Korea. The analysis shows that the annual-average daily horizontal global radiation is3.61kWh/m2 and the annual-average daily hours of bright sunshineis 5.1 Hrs in Korea. A Varian Portal Dosimetry system was compared to an isocentrically mounted MapCHECK 2 diode array for volumetric modulated arc therapy (VMAT) QA. A Varian TrueBeam STx with an aS-1000 digital imaging panel was used to acquire VMAT QA images for 13 plans using four photon energies (6, 8, 10 and 15 MV). The EPID-based QA images were compared to the Portal Dose Image Prediction calculated in the Varian Eclipse treatment planning system (TPS). An isocentrically mounted Sun Nuclear MapCHECK 2 diode array with 5 cm water-equivalent buildup was also used for the VMAT QAs and the measurements were compared to a composite dose plane from the Eclipse TPS. A ${\gamma}$ test was implemented in the Sun Nuclear Patient software with 10% threshold and absolute comparison at 1%/1 mm (dose difference/distance-to-agreement), 2%/2 mm, and 3%/3 mm criteria for both QA methods. The two-tailed paired Student's t-test was employed to analyze the statistical significance at 95% confidence level. The average ${\gamma}$ passing rates were greater than 95% at 3%/3 mm using both methods for all four energies. The differences in the average passing rates between the two methods were within 1.7% and 1.6% of each other when analyzed at 2%/2 mm and 3%/3 mm, respectively. The EPID passing rates were somewhat better than the MapCHECK 2 when analyzed at 1%/1 mm; the difference was lower for 8 MV and 10 MV. However, the differences were not statistically significant for all criteria and energies (p-values >0.05). The EPID-based QA showed large off-axis over-response and dependence of ${\gamma}$ passing rate on energy, while the MapCHECK 2 was susceptible to the MLC tongue-and-groove effect. The two fluence-based QA techniques can be an alternative tool of VMAT QA to each other, if the limitations of each QA method (mechanical sag, detector response, and detector alignment) are carefully considered.
For Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy(IMRT), the spatial resolution of intensity map(IM) is limited by the width of multi-leaf collimator, which would make an effect on the conformity of the target, as well as organs at risk. Several Methods are suggested to increase the spatial resolution, which can be categorized by the hardware-dependent technique and the software-based technique. However the best solution might be to make the width of MLC finer. it has several obstacles in the respects of technical difficulty and cost. This preliminary study is designed to investigate the clinical effectiveness of the virtual-micro IMRT(VMIMRT) technique, one of the software-based technique. A particular intensity map was created, which has 42$\times$54 pixel dimension ,0.5cm pixel size and 15 intensity levels. Using this intensity map, segment fields of IMRT were generated with 1$\times$lcm, 0.5$\times$1cm, 0.5$\times$0.5cm(VMIM) beamlet size, respectively As results, we found that there was no evidence of improvement for VMIMRT, compared with the 0.5$\times$lcm beamlet size which can be delivered by 1cm width MLC. The reason seems to be due to the constraint of VMIMRT. Further study is required to prove the benefit of the VIMRT in clinical case like head and neck cancer, where is expected that higher resolution than 1cm is necessary.
