  • In this paper, a new CMOS RF model for RF IC design including the capacitance effect, the skin effect, and the proximity effect between metal lines on the Si surface is proposed for tile first time for accurately predicting the RF behavior of CMOS devices. The capacitances between metal lines on the Si surface are modeled with the layout. And the skin effect is modeled with a parallel branch added in equivalent circuit of metal line. The proximity effect is modeled by adding the mutual inductance between cross-coupled inductances in the ladder circuit representation. Compared to the BSIM 3v3. the proposed RF model shows good agreements with the measured data and shows well the frequency dependent behavior of devices in GHz ranges.

  • Many pilot projects are developed using USN(Ubiquitous Sensor network). Recently USN has more attention to be used for the applications of circumstance monitoring. In order to acquire information from sensor nodes, sensor nodes need a RF transceiver. In this paper we describe the design of a RF transceiver, based on IEEE 802.15.4, for sensor nodes operating in 2.4GHz frequency band. The architecture to be implemented and the electrical performance specifications satisfied IEEE 802.15.4 are presented. The noise figure of a receiver, selectivity, phase noise of a frequency synthesizer, transmitter's linearity and spectrum mask are derived as a design parameters from the specifications of IEEE 802.15.4.

  • Microwave wireless power transmission (MWPT) is a promising technique for low and medium power applications such as wireless charging for sensor network or for biomedical chips in case with long ranges or in dispersive media such. A key factor of the MWPT technique is its efficiency, which includes the wireless power transmission efficiency and the radio frequency (RF) to direct current (DC) voltage efficiency of RF-DC converter (which transforms RF energy to DC supply voltage). The main problem in designing an RF-DC converter is the nonlinear characteristic of Schottky diodes; this characteristic causes low efficiency, higher harmonics frequency and a change in the input impedance value when the RF input power changes. In this paper, rather than using harmonic termination techniques of class E or class F power amplifiers, which are usually used to improve the efficiency of RF-DC converters, we propose a new method called "optimal input impedance" to enhance the performance of our design. The results of simulations and measurements are presented in this paper along with a discussion of our design concerning its practical applications.

  • This paper covers the design and implementation process of RF hypertermia system for cancer therapy. Among many hyperthermic methods, RF capacitive heating method is discussed because it can heat the deep-seated tumors selectively. The RF power oscillator and its applicators were designed and implemented. And the experiments were performed with agar phantom and dog to prove that the system can heat any depth selectively. And the electrical safety and appropriateness of clinical application was proved through the human living-body test.

  • An Electrostatic discharge (ESD) protection has been a very important reliability issue in microelectronics, especially for RF (Radio Frequency) integrated circuits (ICs). This paper reviews design and analysis of on-chip ESD (electrostatic discharge) protection circuits for RF applications. Key issues in RF ESD protection, design methods, and RF ESD protection solutions are discussed.

  • In this paper, design parameters are investigated and design procedure is established for PCS mobile station, especially for receiver RF block. And simulation environment to analyze parameters of the receiver RF block to determine whether it satisfies the receiver standard, IS-98C, is calculated. Design parameters are simulated and optimized. With simulated results, PCS mobile station is implemented and tested. Measured results show good agreement with simulation Design procedure can be used to get optimum characteristics for each of receiver block. By using optimum characteristics, mobile station can be designed more efficiently.

  • This paper presents method to suppress signal interference by using the filter in the RF output stage of the radiation equipment as a way to avoid interference between the RF(Radio Frequency) equipment mounted on aircraft. Especially filter design to suppress harmonics of the radiation equipment and testing method to verify the filter's performance is presented. Filter was installed at RF output stage of U/VHF radio in order to prevent interference between U/VHF(Ultra/Very High Frequency) radio and data link system. Filter design and testing method in this paper will be able to give help in the design of aircraft equipments as a tool that can be used to establish measures for problem of interference in the aircraft.

  • Synthetic Aperture Radar(SAR) is a powerful and well established microwave remote sensing technique which enables high resolution measurement of Earth surface independent of weather conditions and sunlight illumination. KARI has been developing the first Korea SAR satellite which is scheduled to be launched in this year. The SAR satellite mainly consists of the bus platform and SAR payload. Most of all, the RF compatible design during the design phase and the verification of the RF compatibility during the testing phase is very important procedure for the in-orbit performance guarantee because the SAR payload radiates high power through the SAR antenna. In this study, the SAR satellite design criteria and verification procedure for the RF compatibility are described. In addition, this paper describes the RF full radiation testing (RF auto-compatibility testing) for the verification of the RF performance robustness, the testing configuration, and the test results.

  • GaAs-based and InP-based HEMTs(High Electron Mobility Transistors) have good microwave and millimeter-wave frequency performance with lower minimum noise figure. GaAs-based MHEMTs(Metamorphic HEMTs) have some advantages, especially for cost, compared with InP-based ones. In this paper, the RF small-signal circuits of MHEMTs are simulated and analyzed for the design of millimeter-wave application systems. The simulation analysis for RF small-signal frequency can help and give some insights about the MHEMTs for the design of millimeter-wave application and communication systems.

  • A new design of RF automatic gain control amplifier with low phase shift attenuator is proposed. By using the RF AGC amplifier, the output level of amplifier becomes to be constant. The error is 0.1dB. In addition, for arbitrary RF input power, it is possible to design the gain of amplifier to be fixed. If the constant gain is maintained, it is more reliable to make wanted IMD(Intermodulation Distortion) characteeristic amplifier.
