The Impacts of Research and Development Expenditures on Values of U.S. High-Tech Firms (미국 High-Tech 기업의 연구개발 지출이 기업가치에 미치는 영향)

  • This paper empirically studies the relationship between R&D expenditures and firms value. First, we can conjecture that R&D expenditures are enhancing the firms value. Such findings depend on an existing research, which R&D expenditures are intangible asset rather than expenses. Although, under U.S. accounting standards, financial statements do not report intangible assets but costs. Second, we can conjecture that short-term, the rate of increase in R&D expenditures had negative influence on firms valuation, because such findings indicates that R&D spending of costs incur mis-pricing. But long-term, consistently R&D expenditures may attract investors on the stock market. Third, lately firms focus on capital efficiency management, such a firms R&D expenditures incur high ROE. Generally investors put too much confidence in capital efficiency management and high ROE may attract investors on the stock market. Finally, High-Tech through the R&D investment improve firms competitive advantage, by competitive advantage, firms have reduced cost and raised productivity in the end improve firms value.

  • 한국이 탈추격에 진입하였으며 이에 대응한 새로운 기술혁신전략이 필요하다고 제기되고 있는데, 본 연구에서는 이를 산업연관표에 기반한 산업별 생산방식 변화 등의 분석을 통하여 확인하며, 산업별 인력 구성의 변화를 중심으로 새로운 기술혁신전략을 모색하였다. 인력양성과 활용의 측면을 중심으로 한 학습과정(leaning process)이 R&D 등 혁신노력과 성공적으로 조응될 때 기대한 혁신성과가 실현될 수 있음을, 28산업분류 수준에서 대학 전공의 일에서의 유용성과 R&D투입간 조응성을 통하여 분석하고, 이러한 사항이 국가수준의 혁신정책에 통합되어야 함을 제시하였다.

Directions for Improving Efficiency of National Agricultural R&D Programs Based on Their Performance Analyses (성과분석에 근거한 농업부문 연구개발사업의 개선방안)

  • Agricultural R&D Programs of the Ministry of Agriculture and Forest and the Rural Development Administration are important for improving agricultural technology in Korea. However, the roles of these two agencies have been overlapped as the research fields and funds are extended through educational-industrial-governmental-institutional cooperation programs. In this study, we analyzed the performances of two agencies. As a result, these programs of these agencies do not show much difference in the research area. A new direction for improving efficiency and solving problems of programs, with a variety of information about the role of two agencies and activation of agricultural R&D programs, will be provided by this performance analyses.

Rethinking Informal R&D Activities: Its Impact on Technological Innovation (비공식적인 연구개발 활동이 기술혁신에 미치는 영향)

  • To date, the literature has focused on formal R&D activities, such as internal, joint or external R&D, but informal R&D activities, such as job training or design, can also have a positive impact on technological innovation. To address this research gap, this paper examined 1) the influence of informal R&D activities on innovation adoption, and 2) the differences between formal R&D-oriented and informal R&D-oriented firms in process and product innovation. For this, statistical analysis was conducted using the data set from 2012 Korea Innovation Survey. The results suggest that 1) informal R&D activities can influence process innovation, and 2) firms engaging in both informal and formal R&D actively adopt product innovation. Findings suggest that 1) firms should recognize the importance of informal R&D and 2) national R&D policy should reflect the positive role of informal R&D in technological innovation.

Dyeability and Color Fastness of Optimal Reactive Dyes According to Linen Fabrics (린넨 직물의 번수에 따른 최적 반응성 염료의 염색성 및 염색견뢰도 연구)

  • In this study, we constructed a database of dyeing concentrations of all reactive dyes used for dyeing linen according to the thickness of the linen fabric and attempted to improve the reproducibility of the dyeing process for the commercialization of linen fabric materials. Linen fabric is a natural cellulose material that is comfortable and suitable for eco-friendly trends. It is a typical summer material with excellent breathability and thermal conductivity, quick moisture absorption and dissipation, and a cool touch. Dyeability and fastness were evaluated depending on the thickness of the linen fabric using a monochlorotriazine (MCT) reactive dye and bifunctional yellow, red, and blue dyes. All three colors of the MCT reactive dye and bifunctional dyes exhibited a darker shade as the fiber thickness of the marker increased. Fastness to washing was excellent at grades 4-5 or higher, regardless of the color of the dye and the number of linen fabrics. Although some color-fastness differences were noted, with the color change occurring most frequently with blue color, the fastness variations with dye type were mostly similar. The results of this study are expected to facilitate the selection of reactive dyes according to the thickness of the linen fabric based on the basic data from the laboratory, which will aid in the mass production of linen fabric and benefit the fashion industry.

Process Design and Economic Evaluation of Condensate Recycling Process for Steam Consumption Reduction (스팀 사용 저감을 위한 응축수 재활용 공정설계 및 경제성 평가)

  • This study focused on the epoxy resin production process, which uses the steam of 155 ℃ or higher as a heat source, and discards all condensate generated. A part of the process is operated at low temperatures of 70 ℃ or below, thus there are opportunities to reduce the steam consumption by recycling wasted condensate as a heat source for the low temperature section of process. In this study, we developed process models that can reduce steam by recovering waste heat through recycling condensate and conducted a case study to find an optimal condensate recycling system. Three different process designs were proposed and economic evaluations were performed by comparing annual capital costs and steam savings in each case. Finally, an annual steam consumption of the low-temperature section could be reduced by up to 67.6%, which could also bring an additional economic benefit of 522.1 million won/yr.

  • 지난 6월 9일, 연구개발정보센터(KORDIC)는 전자신문사와 공동으로 "과학기술 R&D에서 슈퍼컴퓨팅의 역할"이라는 주제로 각 응용 분야별 슈퍼컴퓨팅 관련 석학들을 모시고 좌담회를 개최하였다. 이날 참석자들은 슈퍼컴퓨터의 도입과 이의 적절한 활용이야말로 국가과학기술 경쟁력은 물론 산업경쟁력을 좌우할 만큼 중요하며 특히 과학기술 연구 개발 및 산업 분야의 생산성 제고에 지대한 영향을 미친다고 강조하고 정부 담당 부처의 이에 대한 아낌없는 지원을 요청했다. 이날 좌담회에서 논의된 토론자의 발언을 정리해 보았다.

Effect of Feeding-Induced Molting on the Performance and Egg Quality in Laying Hens (급이에 의한 강제 환우 방법이 산란계의 생산성과 계란 품질에 미치는 영향)

  • Animal welfare advocates, claim that the induced molting by fasting be avoided. This study was conducted to evaluate the effect of molting induced by various feeding methods on productivity and egg quality in laying hens. We used 400 flocks of 60-week-old leghorn laying hens in four treatments(five replicates of 20 hens each): fasting method (C), feeding single corn grain diet (T1), feeding single wheat bran diet (T2) and feeding single alfalfa meal diet (T3). As the result of the experiment, egg production and daily egg mass significantly decreased only in T1 compared with the control during the $1{\sim}4th$ week after the secondary egg laying (P<0.05). Although the amount of feed intake was significantly less in T1 group during the $1{\sim}4th$ week compared to the control, no significant difference was detected during the total period (P>0.05). In addition, no significant difference of feed conversion was observed between treatment groups. In terms of egg quality, the egg shell thickness was significantly improved in T1 group than the control group by feeding only corn at the 10th and 14th week after the secondary egg laying (P<0.05), but the significant decrease was observed at the corn (T1) and wheat bran (T2) fed treatment groups than the control group at the 26th week of the experiment (P<0.05). The eggshell strength and haugh unit did not show any difference by the molting methods. Egg yolk color was significantly decreased in T1 and T2 group than the control group at the 6th week (P<0.05). However, T1 and T2 group resulted to show significantly high egg yolk color at the 18th week of the experiment (P<0.05). As the result of the experiment, no large difference was observed in the productivity by the feeding molting method and by the fasting induced molting method. In addition, the single diet fed feeding induced molting method by using alfalfa revealed to show more satisfactory trend than the corn or wheat bran single diet fed feeding induced molting methods even if no statistically significant difference was found in terms of egg productivity.

The SMEs' Innovation Capacity, Standardization Education, and Performance: Empirical Evidence from the ICT and Electronics Industries (중소기업의 혁신역량, 표준화 교육활동 및 혁신성과의 관계: 정보통신 및 전기전자 산업을 중심으로)

  • This study investigates the relationships among SMEs' innovation capacity, standardization education activities, and performances. Employing about 900 SMEs in the ICT and electronics electricity industries, this study used regression analysis and examined the effects of standardization education activities on performance and the moderating effect of innovation capacity. The results indicate that standardization education activities positively affect SMEs' production and quality improvement and R&D activity improvement. The results also show that R&D investment ratio moderates the relationship between standardization education and production and quality improvement. This study provides practical insight into why firm managers should pay attention to standardization education and innvation capacity to improve firm performance.

Effect of Dietary Lactobacillus on Growth Performance, Intestinal Microflora, Development of Ileal Villi, and Intestinal Mucosa in Broiler Chickens (유산균의 급여가 육계 생산성, 장내 미생물 균총, 회장 융모 발달 및 장점막에 미치는 영향)

  • This experiment was conducted to investigate the effects of dietary supplementation of various Lactobacilli strains on growth performance, intestinal microflora, ileal villi development and ileal mucosal surface of broiler chickens. Six hundred 1-d-old male chicks(Avian) were randomly divided into five groups of four replicates, each replicates containing 30 birds and fed corn-soybean meal diets containing Latobaillus were isolated from cecum of chichens at 107cfu/g diet for five weeks. The treatments were control(antibiotics-free diet), Lactobacillus crispatus avibro1(LCB), Lactobacillus reuteri avibro2(LRB), Lactobacillus crispatus avihen1(LCH) or Lactobacillus vaginalis avihen2(LVH). The body weight gain in groups fed Lactobacillus significantly improved as compared to those of control(P<0.05). Feed intake was not statistically different among the groups. The number of Lactobacillus in ileum and cecum of chicks fed various Lactobacillus tended to be increased or significantly increased as compared to those of the control(P<0.05), but there was difference by age of chicks and species of Lactobacillus. The number of yeast was significantly increased in cecum and ileum at three weeks old chicks fed Lactobacilli compared with the control(P<0.05). The anaerobes’ number of ileum and cecum tended to increase or significantly increased in Lactobacillus treatments compared with the control(P<0.05). The ileal villi length extended greatly at three weeks of age in groups fed Lactobacillus compared with the control(P<0.05). The length of ileal villi in chicks fed Lactobacillus was continuously increased up to five weeks of age, but did not increased in the control(P<0.05). Lactobacillus was found on ileal mucosal surface. And ileal mucosal surface was maintained better with Latobacillus feeding. These results suggest the possibility that cecal Lactobacillus of chickens could be used as probiotics by improving the growth performance and promoting development of ileal villi in broiler chicks.
