  • In this study, we compared the observed information matrix with the Fisher information matrix to estimate the uncertainty of maximum likelihood estimators of the generalized logistic (GL) distribution. The previous literatures recommended the use of the observed information matrix because this is convenient since this matrix is determined as the part of the parameter estimation procedure and there is little difference in accuracy between the observed information matrix and the Fisher information matrix for large sample size. The observed information matrix has been applied for the generalized logistic distribution based on the previous study without verification. For this purpose, a simulation experiment was performed to verify which matrix gave the better accuracy for the GL model. The simulation results showed that the variance-covariance of the ML parameters for the GL distribution came up with similar results to those of previous literature, but it is preferable to use of the Fisher information matrix to estimate the uncertainty of quantile of ML estimators.

  • A coupled river-overland hydrodynamic model was applied to estimate flood risk by a scenario-based approach. The study area is Seongseo Industrial Complex in Daegu which is located near Nakdong river and Geumho river. Inundation depth and velocity at each time were calculated by applying a coupled 1D/2D hydrodynamic model to the target area of interest. The 2D inundation analysis for river and overland domain was performed with the scenario-based approach that there are levee overflow against 100/200 year high quantile (97.5%) design flood and levee break against 100/200 year normal quantile (50%) design flood. The level of flood risk was displayed for resident/industrial area using information about maximum depth and velocity of each node computed from the 2D inundation map. The research outcome would be very useful in establishing specified emergency action plans (EAP) in case of levee break and overflowing resulting from a flood.

  • Generalized Pareto distribution (GPD) is frequently applied in hydrologic extreme value analysis. The main objective of statistics of extremes is the prediction of rare events, and the primary problem has been the estimation of the threshold and the exceedances which were difficult without an accurate method of calculation. In this paper, to obtain the threshold or the exceedances, four methods were considered. For this comparison a GPD model was used to estimate parameters and quantiles for the seven durations (1, 2, 3, 6, 12, 18 and 24 hours) and the ten return periods (2, 3, 5, 10, 20, 30, 50, 70, 80 and 100 years). The parameters and quantiles of the three-parameter generalized Pareto distribution were estimated with three methods (MOM, ML and PWM). To estimate the degree of fit, three methods (K-S, CVM and A-D test) were performed and the relative root mean squared error (RRMSE) was calculated for a Monte Carlo generated sample. Then the performance of these methods were compared with the objective of identifying the best method from their number.

  • A simple method is proposed for constructing nonparametric confidence intervals for the difference or ratio of two median failure times. The method applies when clustered survival data with censoring is randomized either (I) under cluster randomization or (II) subunit randomization. This method is simple to calculate and is based on non-parametric density estimation. The proposed method is illustrated with the otology study data and HL-A antigen study data. Moreover, the simulation results are reported for practical sample sizes.

  • Given a sequence { $X_{n}$} of independent and identically distributed random variables with F, a sequential procedure for the p-th quantile ξ$_{P}$= $F^{-1}$ (P), 0$\beta$-protection. Some asymptotic properties for the proposed procedure and of an involved stopping time are proved: asymptotic consistency, asymptotic efficiency and asymptotic normality. From one of the results an effect of smoothing based on kernel functions is discussed. The results are also extended to the contaminated case.e.e.

  • The unknown parameters in regression models are usually estimated by using various existing methods. There are several existing methods, such as the least squares method, which is the most common one, the least absolute deviation method, the regression quantile method, and the asymmetric least squares method. For the nonlinear time series regression models, which do not satisfy the general conditions, we will compare them in two ways: 1) a theoretical comparison in the asymptotic sense and 2) an empirical comparison using Monte Carlo simulation for a small sample size.

  • Purpose: This paper is concerned with optimally designing accelerated degradation test (ADT) plans based on a gamma process for the degradation model. Methods: By minimizing the asymptotic variance of the MLE of the q-th quantile of the lifetime distribution at the use condition, the test stress levels and the proportion of test units allocated to each stress level are optimally determined. Results: The optimal plans of ADT are developed for various combination of parameters. In addition, a method for determining the sample size is developed, and sensitivity analysis procedures are illustrated with an example. Conclusion: It is important to optimally design ADT based on a gamma process under the condition that a degradation process should be always nonnegative and strictly increasing over time.

  • Motivated by the recent work of Cordeiro and Castro (2011), we study the Kumaraswamy exponentiated Frechet distribution (KEF). We derive some mathematical properties of the (KEF) including moment generating function, moments, quantile function and incomplete moment. We provide explicit expressions for the density function of the order statistics and their moments. In addition, the method of maximum likelihood and least squares and weighted least squares estimators are discuss for estimating the model parameters. A real data set is used to illustrate the importance and flexibility of the new distribution.

  • In this paper we propose the iteratively reweighted least squares procedure to solve the quadratic programming problem of support vector expectile regression with an asymmetrically weighted squares loss function. The proposed procedure enables us to select the appropriate hyperparameters easily by using the generalized cross validation function. Through numerical studies on the artificial and the real data sets we show the effectiveness of the proposed method on the estimation performances.
