  • The small-loop electromagnetic (EM) technique has been used successfully for many geophysical investigations, particularly for shallow engineering and environmental surveys. In conventional small loop EM operating at small induction numbers, geometric sounding has been widely used because the depth of penetration of EM energy depends only on the source-receiver separation. Recently developed small loop EM system, however, measures the secondary magnetic field, $H^S$, at multiple frequencies with a fixed source-receiver separation and frequency sounding is tried actively. In this study, we analyzed the behavior of in-phase and quadrature components of ${H^S}_z$, for horizonal coplanar (HCP) configuration over two-layer models. Through this theoretical analysis, it was found that the in-phase component of ${H^S}_z$ is more suitable for frequency sounding than the quadrature component. But, the in-phase component of ${H^S}_z$ is too small to measure, especially in resistive and noisy environment like Korea. Using the fact that the quadrature component is much greater than the in-phase component and the difference of quadrature component of ${H^S}_z$ measured at two frequencies shows the same behavoir as the in-phase component, we suggested an alternative frequency sounding technique. Also, we defined an apparent conductivity, which reflects well the conductivity of subsurface layers.

  • The degradation due to channel distortion in a quadrature modulation system from the ideal constant values over the bandwidth of a direct sequence spread spectrum signal are considered. Through using series expansion for the channel gain and phase response, the degradation in the correlator output at the receiver is found as a function of the parameters involved , including phase error, delay error, linear gin variation, quadratic gain variation, and quadratic phase variation.

  • SSB(Single Sideband) modulation scheme is high bandwidth efficient method in the mobile communication system compared with present DSB(Double Sideband) modulation scheme. Using the othogonality between inphase PN code and Hilbert transformed quadrature PN code, we propose phase estimation structure that enables coherent demodulation in the reverse link basestation receiver Several system characteristics, bit error rate and phase error variance, are simulated and compared with balanced QPSK DS/CDMA system. To verify system performance, SSB/BPSK-DS/CDMA test board is implemented using FPGA chips.

  • A CMOS frequency synthesizer for $5{\sim}6$ GHz UNII-band sub-harmonic direct-conversion receiver has been developed. For quadrature down-conversion with sub-harmonic mixing, octa-phase local oscillator (LO) signals are generated by an integer-N type phase-locked loop (PLL) frequency synthesizer. The complex timing issue of feedback divider of the PLL with large division ratio is solved by using multimodulus prescaler. Phase noise of the local oscillator signal is improved by employing the ring-type LC-tank oscillator and switching its tail current source. Implemented in a $0.18{\mu}m$ CMOS technology, the phase noise of the LO signal is lower than -80 dBc/Hz and -113 dBc/Hz at 100 kHz and 1MHz offset, respect-tively. The measured reference spur is lower than -70 dBc and the power consumption is 40 m W from a 1.8 V supply voltage.

  • In general, channel information of received DTV signal analyzed based on symbol timing clock with only In-phase information in DTV receiver. This paper presents technical requirements of channel analysis system for DTV reception signal. In order to meet such requirements and measure more accurate magnitude and phase of channel information, compensation method for the quadrature information from measured in-phase data is proposed. The proposed channel analysis system is implemented with a commercial DTV chipset and provides fast data analysis with good connectivity with field test vehicles. Computer simulation and laboratory test results are provided to figure out the performance of the proposed channel analysis system for DTV signal.

  • The authors propose a robust symbol timing recovery (STR) for telephone line modems supporting data rates up to 32 Mbps. The STR is initialized by a start signal from carrier sensor, and the novel method is proposed which resolves the difference between the frequency of the transmitter's clock and the receiver's clock, called baud frequency offset. The proposed method is applied on digital receiver in a 16 frequency diverse quadrature amplitude modulation (FDQAM) system.

  • Equivalent-time sampling can improve measurement or sensing systems because it enables a broader frequency band and higher delay resolution for periodic signals with lower sampling rates than a Nyquist receiver. Meanwhile, a digital down-conversion (DDC) technique can be implemented using a straightforward radio frequency (RF) circuit. It avoids timing skew and in-phase/quadrature gain imbalance instead of requiring a high-speed analog-to-digital converter to sample an intermediate frequency (IF) signal. Therefore, when equivalent-time sampling and DDC techniques are combined, a significant synergy can be achieved. This study provides a parameter design methodology for optimal equivalent-time sampling using DDC.

  • This paper describes what brings about DC offset and the impact or the DC offset on the performance or direct-conversion mobile receiver in WCDMA system. The performance degradation of $E_{b}/N_{o}$ due to the DC offset is presented through simulation result. Direct-conversion RF Transceiver which has the function of DC offset control is implemented and then applied to the WCDMA test-bed for the performance evaluation. The receiver performance degradation of $E_{c}/I_{o}$ is evaluated and analyzed by varying DC offset value. The practical test showed the minimum requirement of DC offset value to meet system performance.

  • In this paper, we propose a new digital blind in-phase/quadrature-phase (I/Q) mismatch compensation technique for image rejection in a direct-conversion receiver (DCR). The proposed image-rejection circuit adopts DC offset cancellation and a sign-sign least mean squares (LMS) algorithm with a unique step size adaptation both for a fast and precise I/Q mismatch estimation. In addition, several performance-optimizing design considerations related to accuracy, speed, and hardware simplicity are discussed. The implementation of the proposed circuit in an FPGA results in an image-rejection ratio (IRR) of 65 dB, which is the best performance with modulated signals, along with an adaptation time of 0.9 seconds, which is a tenfold increase in the compensation speed as compared to previously reported circuits. The proposed technique will be a promising solution in the area of image rejection to increase both the speed and accuracy of future DCRs.

  • In this paper, the efficient equalization method for OFDM(Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiflexing) System using the QAM(Quadrature Amplitude Modulation) in multipath fading channel is proposed in order to faster and more efficiently equalize the received signals that are sent over real channel. In generally, the one-tap linear equalizers have been used in the frequency-domain as the existing equalization method for OFDM system. In this technique, if characteristics of the channel are changed fast, the one-tap linear equalizers cannot compensate for the distortion due to time variant multipath channels. Therefore, in this paper, we use one-tap non-linear equalizers instead of using one-tap linear equalizers in the frequency-domain, and also use the linear equalizer in the time-domain to compensate the rapid performance reduction at the low SNR(Signal-to-Noise Ratio) that is the disadvantage of the non-linear equalizer. In the frequency-domain, when QAM signals, consisting of in-phase components and quadrature (out-phase) components, are sent over the complex channel, the only in-phase and quadrature components of signals distorted by the multipath fading are changed the same as signals distorted by the noise. So the cross components are canceled in the frequency-domain equalizer. The time-domain equalizer and the adaptive algorithm that has lower-error probability and fast convergence speed are applied to compensate for the error that is caused by canceling the cross components in the frequency-domain equalizer. In the time-domain, To compensate for the performance of frequency-domain equalizer the time-domain equalizes the distorted signals at a frame by using the Gold-code as a training sequence in the receiver after the Gold-codes are inserted into the guard signal in the transmitter. By using the proposed equalization method, we can achieve faster and more efficient equalization method that has the reduced computational complexity and improved performance.
