  • There are several methods for the design of 2D filter. Notable among them is McClellan transform method. This transform allows us to obtain a high order 2D FIR filter through mapping the 1D frequency points of a 1D prototype FIR filter onto 2D frequency contours. We design 2D filter using this transform. Then we notice for mapping deviation of the 2D filter. In this paper, Quadratic programming (QP) method allows us to obtain coefficients of McClellan transform. Then we compare deviation of QP method with least-squares(LS) method. Elliptic filter is used for comparison. The optimal cutoff frequencies of a 1D filter are obtained directly from the QP method. Also several problem of LS method are solved.

  • Available transfer capability(ATC) is an important indicator of the usable amount of transmission capacity accessible by several parties for commercial trading in power transaction activities. This paper deals with an application of optimization technique for available transfer capability(ATC) calculation and analyzes the results of ATC by considering several constraints. Sequential quadratic programming(SQP) is used to calculate the ATC problem with state-steady security constraints. The proposed method is applied to 10 machines 39 buses model systems to show its effectiveness.

  • In this study the optimization of plate-fin type heat sink for the thermal stability is peformed numerically. The optimum design variables are obtained when the temperature rise and the pressure drop are minimized simultaneously. The flow and thermal fields are predicted using the finite volume method and the optimization is carried out by using the sequential quadratic programming (SQP) method which is widely used in the constrained non-linear optimization problem. The results show that when the temperature rise is less than 34.6K, the optimal design variables are as follows; B$_1$=2.468mm, B$_2$=1.365mm, and t=10.962mm. The Pareto optimal solutions are also presented for the pressure drop and the temperature rise.

  • The wear problem of wheel flange occurs at sharp curves of rail. This paper proposes a procedure for optimum design of a wheel profile wherein flange wear is reduced by improving an interaction between wheel and rail. Application of optimization method to design problem mainly depends on characteristics of design space. This paper compared local optimization method with global optimization according to sensitivity value of objective function for design variables to find out which optimization method is appropriable to minimize wear of wheel flange. Wheel profile is created by a piecewise cubic Hermite interpolating polynomial and dynamic performances are analyzed by a railway dynamic analysis program, VAMPIRE. From the optimization results, it is verified that the global optimization method such as genetic algorithm is more suitable to wheel profile optimization than the local optimization of SQP (Sequential Quadratic Programming) in case of considering the lack of empirical knowledge for initial design value.

  • This paper treats the aerodynamic optimization of the blade planform for helicopters. The blade shapes, which should be determined during the threedimensional aerodynamic configuration design step, are defined and are parameterized using the B$\acute{e}$zier curves. This research focuses on the design approaches generally adopted by industries and or research institutes using their own experiences and know-hows for the parameterization and for the definition of design constraints. The hover figure of merit and the equivalent lift-to-drag ratio for the forward flight are used to define the objective function. The resultant nonlinear programming (NLP) problem is solved using the sequential quadratic programming (SQP) method. The applications show the present method can design the important planform shapes such as the airfoil distribution, twist and chord variations in the efficient manner.

  • The linerization method as one of the recursive quadratic programming method is applied for the optimal design of a large-scale structure supported by Pshenichny's proof of global convergence of the algorithm and convergence rate estimates. The linearization method transforms all constants of the design problem into an equivalent linearized constraint and employs the active-set strategy. This results in substantial computational savings by reducing the number of sate and adjoint to be solved at every design iteration. The illustrative example of plates with beams supported by columns is the typical one of a large-scale structure to give successful optimum solutions with satisfactory convergence criteria. Hopefully, the method may be applicable to all classes of optimization problems.

  • Optimization scheme is presented for the design of precast prestressed double-tee beams used as slabs in the parking or market structures. The objective considered is defined by a function that minimizes the hight of the double-tee beam, including the prefabricated element and the concrete topping poured in a second phase. The Sequential Quadratic Programming method is adopted to solve the problem. As an example 12 double-tee beams are designed with the design loads of the current design code of our country. The results from optimization process show that at least 29cm less in overall height than that designed by PCI design handbook. The section determined from the optimization process was refined for practical considerations. A MathCad 7.0 Pro Spreadsheet was prepared to verify all ACI requirements for flexure, shear and deflections. Flexural tests are performed on four full-scale 12.5m prototype models and show that all the specimens are fully comply the flexural strength requirements as specified by ACI 318-95. The present optimization scheme can be used for wider application of the design of precast prestressed double-tee beams with different materials and configurations particularly for in a large scale or for important designs.

  • In this study the optimization of plate-fin type heat sink with vortex generator for the thermal stability is performed numerically. The optimum solutions in the heat sink are obtained when the temperature rise and the pressure drop are minimized simultaneously. Thermal performance of heat sink is influenced by the heat sink shape such as the base-part fin width, lower-part fin width, and basement thickness. To acquire the optimal design variables automatically, CFD and mathematical optimization are integrated. The flow and thermal fields are predicted using the finite volume method. The optimization is carried out by means of the sequential quadratic programming (SQP) method which is widely used for the constrained nonlinear optimization problem. The results show that the optimal design variables are as follows; B$_1$=2.584 mm, B$_2$=1.741 mm, and t=7.914 mm when the temperature rise is less than 40 K. Comparing with the initial design, the temperature rise is reduced by 4.2 K, while the pressure drop is increased by 9.43 Pa. The relationship between the pressure drop and the temperature rise is also presented to select the heat sink shape for the designers.

  • In this work, shape optimization of a wire-wrapped fuel assembly in a liquid metal reactor has been carried out by combining a three-dimensional Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes analysis with the radial basis neural network method, a well known surrogate modeling technique for optimization. Sequential Quadratic Programming is used to search the optimal point from the constructed surrogate. Two geometric design variables are selected for the optimization and design space is sampled using Latin Hypercube Sampling. The optimization problem has been defined as a maximization of the objective function, which is as a linear combination of heat transfer and friction loss related terms with a weighing factor. The objective function value is more sensitive to the ratio of the wire spacer diameter to the fuel rod diameter than to the ratio of the wire wrap pitch to the fuel rod diameter. The optimal values of the design variables are obtained by varying the weighting factor.
