  • Insensitive Munitions(IM) of solid propulsion system are defined as munitions that fulfil the performance and operational requirements, but will minimize the violence of a reaction when subjected to inadvertant stimuli. It should be clear that the reaction violence of rocket motor subjected to thermal stimuli can be mitigated by reducing confinement prior to propellant reaction. Devices designed to do this by venting the rocket motor case are commonly referred to as mitigation devices. The objective of this paper is to introduce the technical information related to the pyrotechnic mitigation devices for insensitive munition of solid rocket motor.

  • Explosive bolts are reliable and efficient mechanical fastening devices having the special feature of a built-in release. The disadvantage of explosive bolt lies in that it is based on the high explosive effect of a pyrotechnic charge. The aim of the present work is to propose a pyrotechnically releasable mechanical linking device for two mechanical elements that does not suffer from such drawbacks. The pyro-lock using the pressure cartridge has the release characteristic without fragmentation and minimum pyro-shock. The present work is focused on the design, the interpretation of structure, the separation mechanism, separation force, and the results of various tests.

  • The thermal decomposition characteristics of the ZPP(Zirconium/Potassium perchlorate), widely used as a primary charge of initiators, were investigated by differential scanning calorimetry(DSC). The DSC results with different heating rates were elaborated with AKTS-Thermokinetics software for the determination of the kinetic parameters of the thermal decomposition of ZPP. There was good agreement between the experimental and the simulation curves, based on the determined kinetic parameters, which indicates the validity of the kinetic description of the thermal decomposition process of ZPP.

  • This paper deals with Spin/Stall Recovery Parachute System from design to ground taxiing stage which would be deployed on the high speed taxi of turbo-prop airplane. In detail design phase, design parameters- riser length, parachute type, size, porosity, parachute canopy filling time, and deployment method- were considered based on the analytical disciplines such as aerodynamics, structures, and stability & control. Before the installation of Spin/Stall Recovery System of turbo-prop airplane, all control functions of this system were validated by the SBTB(System Breakout Test Box) in the laboratory. SBTB was used to confirm if it can detect faults, and simulate the firing of pyrotechnic devices that control the deployment and jettison of it. Once confirmed normal operation, deployment of parachute on the high speed taxiing were performed.

  • Explosive bolts are one of pyrotechnic release devices, which are highly reliable and efficient for a built-in release. Among them, ridge-cut explosive bolts which utilize shock wave generated by detonation to separate bolt body produce minimal fragments, little swelling and clean breaks. In this study, separation phenomena of ridge-cut explosive bolts or ridge-cut mechanism are computationally analyzed using Hydrocodes. To analyze separation mechanism of ridge-cut explosive bolts, fluid-structure interactions with complex material modeling are essential. For modeling of high explosives (RDX and PETN), Euler elements with Jones-Wilkins-Lee E.O.S. are utilized. For Lagrange elements of bolt body structures, shock E.O.S., Johnson-Cook strength model, and principal stress failure criteria are used. From the computational analysis of the author's explosive bolt model, computational analysis framework is verified and perfected with tuned failure criteria. Practical design improvements are also suggested based on a parametric study. Some design parameters, such as explosive weights, ridge angle, and ridge position, are chosen that might affect the separation reliability; and analysis is carried out for several designs. The results of this study provide useful information to avoid unnecessary separation experiments related with design parameters.

  • This study aims to acquire a basic clustering technology of hybrid rocket motor for lunar lander, including the oxidizer flow distribution characteristic and the simultaneous ignition characteristic. The experimental setups were established to conduct a series of ground firing test of a clustered motor. The gaseous oxygen (GOX) and the HDPE (High Density PolyEthylene) were used as the oxidizer and the solid fuel, respectively. Experimental results which are the simultaneous pyrotechnic ignition characteristic, the oxidizer distribution characteristic and the pressure traces of each combustion chamber imply that the hybrid rocket clustered motor works successfully.

  • Thermal batteries are primary batteries that use molten salts as an electrolyte and employ an internal pyrotechnic source to heat the battery stack to operating temperatures, typically between 450 and $550^{\circ}C$. The unit cell of thermal batteries consists of an anode, an electrolyte, a cathode, a heat pellet and a current collector. The heat source for such batteries is typically heat pellets based on $Fe/KClO_4$. The elevated temperature by combustion of heat pellet is supposed to cause a flatness non-uniformity, buckling, with a lateral extension diameter of current collector. This paper mainly focused on the combustion and buckling model of current collector to simulate the effect of heat source. Mechanical stresses in the current collector caused by thermal stress is a critical design consideration of thermal batteries because the internal short circuit could be occurred.

  • In this paper, authors described on localization development's results about an electric igniter in thermal battery with a pyrotechnic heat sources. Especially, the development test and evaluation(DT&E) process and the methods in the developments of the electric igniter which is parts of a domestic thermal battery on K-PSAM was in charge of government and developed for defense of a local areas in Korea. We have proposed a process of design and manufacture on the electric igniter. Finally, we verified a quality and a reliability of the electric igniter from test results by Fisher-Snedecor's law and over 99.5 %(C.L. 95 %) for K-PSAM.

  • The present work has been developed the interpretation processor including analysis of the failure stress in pyrotechnically releasable mechanical linking device, which has the release characteristic without fragmentation and pyro-shock, using SoildWorks, COSMOS Works and ANSYS programs. The aim of the invention is to propose a pyrotechnically releasable mechanical linking device for two mechanical elements that does not suffer from such drawbacks. The pyrotechnically releasable mechanical linking device according to the invention is simple, compact and inexpensive in structure. It is simple to implement and permit the use of only a reduced quantity of pyrotechnic composition, such composition possibly being devoid of any primary explosive at all. The present work is only focused on the design of structure and the material characteristics. To analyze the fracture morphology resulted from tensile test in the different ball type bolts, the present work has been performed to estimate the failure stress of material and to make the same result from tensile test. The failure stress of SUS 630 in ductile material is approximately 1050 Mpa. The failure stress of SUS 420 in brittle material is about 1790 Mpa. Among the models used the ductile material, the model 6 is suitable a design of structure compared to that of other models. The use of this interpretation processor developed the present work could be extensively helped to estimate the failure stress of material having a complex geometry such as the ball type bolt

  • This paper describes about the circuit design and test of the electronic Arm Fire Device. Electronic arm fire device consists of igniter, circuit and housing case and it operates without the actuator such as torque motor or solenoid. A high-voltage DC-DC converter was used to generate the voltage for initiating the LEEFI(Low Energy Exploding Foil Initiator). The MEMS switch was used to detect the acceleration that occurs when missile is launched, and the circuit was designed considering the size, performance, and specification of the electronic devices. The performance test was conducted to verify the designed circuit and we confirmed that it operates well.
