Pyrolytic reaction study of dichloromethane ($CH_{2}Cl_{2}$) in excess hydrogen was performed to investigate pyrolytic reaction pathways at a pressure of 1 atm with residence times of 0.3~2.0 sec in the temperature range of $525{\sim}900^{\circ}C$. A constant feed molar ratio $CH_{2}Cl_{2}$:$H_{2}$ of 4:96 was maintained through the experiment. Reagent loss and product formation were monitored by using an on-line gas chromatograph, where batch samples were analyzed by GC/MS. Complete destruction(99%) of the parent reagent was observed at temperature near $780^{\circ}C$ with residence time over 1 sec. Major products observed were $CH_{3}Cl$, $CH_{4}$, $C_{2}H_{4}$, $C_{2}H_{6}$, and HCl. Minor products included $CHClCCl_{2}$, CHClCHCl, $CH_{2}CHCl$, and $C_{2}H_{2}$. The pyrolytic reaction pathways to describe the important features of intermediate product distributions and reagent loss, based upon thermodynamic and kinetic principles, were suggested. The results of this work provided a better understanding of pyrolytic decomposition processes which occur during the pyrolysis of $CH_{2}Cl_{2}$ and similar chlorinated methanes.

Water soluble oil was obtained by pyrolysis of biomass. The characteristics of emulsified fuel by mixing water soluble oil and MDO(marine diesel oil) and engine emissions were studied with engine dynamometer. Saw dust was used as biomass. Water soluble oil was obtained by condensing of water and carbon content with pyrolysis of saw dust at $500^{\circ}C$. Emulsion fuel was obtained by emulsifying MDO and water soluble oil by the water soluble oil mixing ratio of 10 to 20% of MDO. Exhaust gas detection was performed with engine dynamometer. While combustion, micro-explosion took place in the combustion chamber by water in the emulsion fuel, emulsion fuel scattered to micro particles and it caused to smoke reduction. The heat produced from water vapour reduce the temperature of internal combustion chamber and it caused to inhibition of NOx production. It can be verified by the lower exhaust temperature of each ND-13 mode using emulsion fuel than that of MDO fuel. The NOx and smoke concentration were reduced by increasing water soluble oil content in the emulsion fuel. The power also decreased according to the increment of water soluble oil content of emulsion fuel because emulsion fuel has low calorific value due to high water content than MDO. As a result of ND-13 mode test with 20% bio oil content, it was achieved 25% reduction in NOx production, 60% reduction in smoke density, and 15% reduction in power loss.

Water soluble oil was obtained from the pyrolysis of coconut waste as a biomass at $600^{\circ}C$. It was studied that the combustion characteristics of bio-emulsion fuel by mixing and emulsifying 15~20% of water soluble oil which obtained from pyrolysis of coconut waste as a biomass and MDO(marine diesel oil) as a marine fuel. Engine dynamometer was used for detecting emissions, temperature, and power. The temperature of combustion chamber was decreased because the moisture in bio-emulsion fuel deprived of heat of evaporation in combustion chamber. While combustion, micro-explosion took place in the combustion chamber by water in the bio-emulsion fuel, MDO fuel scattered to micro particles and it caused to smoke reduction. The temperature reduction of combustion chamber by using bio-emulsion fuel reduced the NOx emission. The increasing of bio-oil content caused increasing water content in bio-emulsion fuel so total calorific value was reduced. So the characteristics of power was decreased in proportion to using the increasing amount of bio-emulsion fuel. Heavy oil as a marine fuel exhausts a lot of smoke and NOx. We expect that we can reduce the exhaust gas of marine engine such as smoke and NOx by using of bio-emulsion fuel as a marine fuel.

It is important to determine the concentration of long-lived radionuclides (e.g., 129I) in nuclear waste to ensure safety when handling it. To analyze nuclides in a solid sample (e.g., concrete and soil), it is essential to effectively separate and purify the nuclides of interest in the sample. This study reports the comprehensive efforts made to validate the analytical procedure for 129I detection in solid samples, using a high-temperature combustion furnace. 129I volatilized from the sample collected in 0.01 M HNO3 solution with a reducing agent (e.g., NaHSO3) and was rapidly measured by ICP-MS. Analytical conditions, such as pyrolysis temperature and types of mobile phase gas, catalyst, and trapping solution, were optimized to obtain a high recovery rate of spiked 129I. Finally, the optimized method was applied for the simultaneous analysis of other volatile radionuclides, such as 3H and 14C. The performance test results for the optimized method confirmed that the LSC (for 3H and 14C) and ICP-MS (for 129I) measurements, with the separation of volatile nuclides using a high-temperature combustion furnace, were reliable.

In this study, waste carbon fiber obtained by pyrolysis of carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP) was used to produce carbon fluoride through vapor phase fluorination and recycled as a reducing electrode material for lithium primary batteries. First, the physicochemical properties of the waste carbon fiber obtained by pyrolysis were determined, and the structural and chemical properties of carbon fluoride were analyzed to evaluate the effect of vapor phase fluorination on the waste carbon fiber. XRD analysis confirmed that the hexagonal network carbon laminated structure (002 peak) of the waste carbon fiber was gradually converted into a carbon fluoride structure (CFX, 001 peak) as the temperature of gas phase fluorination increased. The discharge capacity of the lithium primary battery produced using this carbon fluoride was up to 862 mAh/g. This was compared to the discharge capacity of carbon fluoride-based Li-ion batteries made of other carbon materials. These results suggest that carbon fluoride made from waste CFRP-based carbon fibers can be used as a reducing electrode material for Li-ion batteries.

A nonthermal plasma-assisted fuel reformer was developed and the effects of operating variables on the performance of this reformer were studied. The $H_2$-rich reformed gas from the reformer was injected into a diesel engine under an idle condition and the effects of the amount of injected gas on the NO and soot reduction were investigated. It was found that with increasing electric power consumption, the degree of facility of ignition of the reforming reaction in the reformer could be enhanced. The performance of the reformer including $H_2$ concentration, $H_2$ recovery, and energy conversion was affected only by the O/C mole ratio. This was because the equilibrium reaction temperature was governed by the O/C mole ratio. With increasing O/C mole ratio, the $H_2$ recovery and energy conversion passed through the maximum values of 33.4% and 66%, respectively, at an O/C mole ratio between 1.2 and 1.5. The reason why the $H_2$ recovery and energy conversion increased with increasing O/C mole ratio when the O/C mole ratio was lower than $1.2{\sim}1.5$ appeared to be that the complete oxidation reaction occurred more enough with increasing O/C mole ratio in this low O/C mole ratio range and accordingly the reaction temperature increased. Whereas the reason why the $H_2$ recovery and energy conversion decreased with increasing O/C mole ratio when the O/C mole ratio was higher than $1.2{\sim}1.5$ appeared to be that the complete oxidation reaction was further advanced and the $H_2$ recovery and energy conversion decreased. As the weight ratio of reformed diesel to total diesel which entered the diesel engine was increased to $18.2{\sim}23.5%$, NO and soot reduction efficiencies increased and reached as values high as 68.5% and 23.5%, respectively.
Recent years have witnessed the increased usage of flammable metals, such as aluminum or magnesium, in wide range of high-tech industries. These metals are indispensable for the improvement of physical properties of materials as well as the design capability of the final product. During the process, unwanted metal dusts could be released to the environment. This can lead to an occupational health and safety issues. Due to their flammable nature, more serious problem of an explosion can happen in extreme cases. The explosion is the combustion of tiny solid particles and vapor mixture, caused by pyrolysis. This complex composition makes engineering analysis more difficult, compared to simple gas explosions or vapor cloud combustions. The study was conducted to assess this light metal dust explosion in an effort to provide the bases for a risk assessment. Dust explosion characteristics of each material was carefully evaluated and an appropriate analysis tool was developed. A comprehensive database was also constructed and utilized for the calibration of the developed response model and the verification for its accuracy. Subsequently, guidelines were provided to prevent dust explosions that could occur in top-notch industrial processes.

Various solar hybrid energy conversion processes, which have both the advantages of renewable energy sources and fossil energy sources, have been developed in the world because stable and predictable energy supplies, such as electricity and natural gas, are necessary for modern societies. In particular, a solar hybrid energy conversion process based on a dual fluidized bed process concept has been expected as the promising solution for sustainable energy supply via thermochemical conversions, such as pyrolysis, combustion, gasification, and so on, because solar thermal energy could be captured and stored in fluidized bed materials. Therefore, the attrition and heat transfer characteristics of silicon carbide and alumina particles used for fluidized bed materials for the solar hybrid energy conversion process were studied in an ASTM D5757 reactor and a bubbling fluidized bed reactor with 0.14m diameter and 2m height. These characteristics of novel fluidized bed materials were compared with those of sand particles which have widely been used as a fluidized bed material in various commercial fluidized bed reactors. The attrition resistances of silicon carbide and alumina particles were higher than those of sand particles while the average values of heat transfer coefficient in the bubbling fluidized bed reactor were in the range of 125 ~ 152 W m-2K-1.
Carbon membrane materials have received considerable attention for the gas separation including hydrocarbon mixture of ingredients of the volatile organic compounds(VOCs) because they possess their higher selectivity, permeability, and thermal stability than the polymeric membranes. The use of activated carbon membranes makes it possible to separate continuously the VOCs mixture by the selective adsorption-diffusion mechanism which the condensable components are preferentially adsorbed in to the micropores of the membrane. The activated carbon hollow fiber membranes with uniform adsorptive micropores on the wall of open pores and the surface of the membranes have been fabricated by the carbonization of a thin film of phenolic resin deposited on porous alumina hollow fiber membrane. Oxidation, carbonization, and activation processing variables were controlled under different conditions in order to improve the separation characteristics of the activated carbon membrane. Properties of activated carbon hollow fiber membranes and the characterization of a gas permeation by pyrolysis conditions were studied. As the result, the activated carbon hollow fiber membranes with good separation capabilities by the molecular size mechanism as well as selective adsorption on the pores surface followed by surface diffusion effective in the recovery hydrocarbons have been obtained. Therefore, these activated carbon membranes prepared in this study are shown as promising candidate membrane for separation of VOCs.

Thermal maturation and diagenesis of the Gyeongsang Supergroup in the Euiseong area are studied by means of organic geochemical techniques and illite crystallinity. Black mudrocks of the Singdong Group contain organic matter of $0.5{\~}2{\%}$ derived from higher plants, being compared to type Ⅲ. Thermal maturity of organic matter reached dry gas generation phase. Tmax by Rock Eval pyrolysis varies between $578^{\circ}C$ and $593^{\circ}C$ regardless of stratigraphic position and localities, and vitrinite reflectance is about 2.9 and $3{\~}4{\%}Ro$ in the Jinju and the Nagdong Formations, respectively. Vitrinite reflectance measurements indicate that the maturation is mainly due to burial and partly to be affected by post-depositional intrusions. Illite crystallinity values from the Nagdong, Hasandong, Jiniu Formations and part of the Iljig Formation are plotted around the boundary between diagenesis and anchizone, indicating dry gas generation stage. However, the values are not dependent on stratigraphic position. The values from the Iljig, Hupyeongdong, Geomgog, and Sagog Formations fall into the range of anchizone, probably resulted from the post-depositional intrusions which occur locally. Both organic geochemical and illite crystallinity data indicate thermal maturation stage of dry gas generation. Diagenesis of the Gyeongsang strata is mostly controlled by burial, and partly affected by post-depositional intrusions. Paleotemperature of the Sindong Group is estimated at around $200^{\circ}C$ on the basis of illite crystallinity.
