Principles and Applications of Galvanostatic Intermittent Titration Technique for Lithium-ion Batteries

  • Lithium-ion battery development is one of the most active contemporary research areas, gaining more attention in recent times, following the increasing importance of energy storage technology. The galvanostatic intermittent titration technique (GITT) has become a crucial method among various electrochemical analyses for battery research. During one titration step in GITT, which consists of a constant current pulse followed by a relaxation period, transient and steady-state voltage changes were measured. It draws both thermodynamic and kinetic parameters. The diffusion coefficients of the lithium ion, open-circuit voltages, and overpotentials at various states of charge can be deduced by a series of titration steps. This mini-review details the theoretical and practical aspects of GITT analysis, from the measurement method to the derivation of the diffusivity equation for research cases according to the specific experimental purpose. This will shed light on a better understanding of electrochemical reactions and provide insight into the methods for improving lithium-ion battery performance.

Determination of Stability Constants Using Electrochemical Methods for the Complex Formation of Platinum and Palladium with Polyelectrolytes

  • The complexation of platinum and palladium with synthetic polyelectrolytes was studied. The successive and overall stability constants of Pd(II) with PEI and 2PVP were obtained by potentiometric titration. Because of the slow equilibrium time, the potentiometric titrations were performed using the home-made automatic titrator in order to analyze the complexations according to the modified Bjerrum method. The complex formation constant of Pt(IV) with 2PVP, measured by differential pulse polarography, was calculated from the peak currents that were obtained in non-complexing media and in solution containing 2PVP.

Application of Pulsed Electric Fields with Square Wave Pulse to Milk Inoculated with E. coli, P. fluorescens, and B. stearothermophilus

  • Ultra-high temperature (UHT) processed full fat milk inoculated with Escherichia coli, Pseudomonas fluorescens, and Bacillus stearothermophilus was exposed to 30-60 kV/cm square wave pulsed electric field (PEF) with $1\;{\mu}sec$ pulse width, and $26-210\;{\mu}sec$ treatment time in a continuous PEF treatment system. Eight log reduction was obtained for E. coli and P. fluorescens and 3 logs reduced for B. stearothermophilus under PEF treatment conditions of $210\;{\mu}sec$ treatment time, 60 kV/cm pulse intensity at $50^{\circ}$. There was no significant change in pH and titration acidity of milk after PEF treatment. The electrical energy required to achieve 8 log reduction for E. coli and P. fluorescens was estimated to be about 0.74 kJ/L.

불활성 가스의 O2와 CO 불순물 제거를 위한 Ni 촉매의 물성 평가 (Assessment of Ni Catalyst Properties for Removal of O2 and CO Impurity in Inert Gas)

  • 반도체 산업용 9N 이상의 초고순도 N2, Ar 등 불활성 가스 제조를 위해 가스 정제공정에 사용되고 있는 Ni 촉매의 물성 평가 및 촉매적 특성을 확인하였다. 조성이 다른 원기둥 형태의 C1, 츄러스 형태의 C2의 두 가지 Ni 촉매에 대해 비교 평가를 진행하였다. Ni 촉매의 형상과 미세구조를 분석하기 위해 광학현미경과 FE-SEM을 이용하였으며, 조성 확인 및 물성을 분석하기 위해 EDS, XRD, 그리고 micro-Raman 분석을 이용하였다. 또한 Ni 촉매의 비표면적 및 촉매적 특성을 확인하기 위해 BET, Pulse Titration 분석을 진행하였다. 조성 분석결과, C1의 경우, 상대적으로 graphite가 불순물로 다량 포함되어 있는 것을 확인하였으며, C2는 C1에 비해 Ni의 함량이 높은 것을 확인하였다. 비표면적 분석 결과, C2의 비표면적이 C1보다 약 1.69배 정도 큰 것을 확인할 수 있었다. 촉매적 특성분석 결과, 상온에서 O2와 CO 불순물 제거 정도가 C2가 우수함을 확인하였다. 따라서 반도체 산업용 초고순도 불활성 기체 제조를 위한 Ni 촉매로는 불순물이 적고, 비표면적이 크며, 상온에서 O2와 CO 제거 성능이 우수한 C2가 적합함을 확인하였다.

$^1H$ NMR Estimation of Multi-Redox potentials of Cytochrome $c_3$ from Desulfovibrio vulgaris Hildenborough

  • The macroscopic and microscopic redox potentials of tetrahemoprotein, cytochrome c3 from Desulfovibrio vulgaris(Hildenborough) (DvH) were estimated from 1H NMR and differential pulse polarography(DPP). Five sets of NMR resonances were confirmed by a redox titration. They represent cytochrome c3 molecules in five macroscopic redox states. The electron transfer in cytochrome c3 involves four consecutive one-electron steps. The saturation transfer method was used to determine the chemical shifts of eight heme methyl resonances in five different oxidation states. Thirty two microscopic redox potentials were estimated. The results showed the presence of a strong positive interaction between a pair of particular hemes. Comparing the results with those of Desulfovibrio vulgaris Miyazaki F (DvMF), it was observed that the two proteins resemble each other in overall redox pattern, but there is small difference in the relative redox potentials of four hemes.

화학조성에 따른 PbSnTe계 반도체의 열전특성조사 (Chemical Analysis and Thermoelectric Properties of the PbSnTe Semiconductors)

  • PbTe, SnTe, PbSnTe계 반도체는 저온 열전재료로서 이들의 화학조성과 비화학양(nonstoichiometry)은 열전 특성에 중요한 인자가 된다. 본 연구에서는 $(Pb_1\;_xSn_x)_1$ $_yTe_y$의 x=0.1, 0.2, 0.3, 0.4, 0.5인 고용체 시편을 제조하여 이들의 조성을 분석하고 화학조성과 전기전도도 및 열기전력과의 상관 관계를 조사하였다. 조성분석을 위하여 Pb의 함량은 EDTA와 Pb(II) 표준용액을 이용한 착화합물 역적정법을, Te의 함량은 $KMnO_4$와 Fe(II)표준용액을 이용한 산화환원 역적정법을 사용하였다. 또한 300K-750K의 온도범위에서 직류 4접점법에 의해 전기전도도를, Heat Pulse법에 의해 열기전력을 측정하였다. 모든 시편은 금속성분 (Pb+Sn) 보다는 Te의 양이 많은 비화학양의 조성을 보이며 p - 형의 반도성을 가졌고 주석의 함량이 증가할수록 비화학양도 증가하였다. 열기전력의 측정으로 시편의 주 전하나르개는 정공임을 확인할 수 있었고 비화학양에 따른 열기전력의 변화를 saturation 영역 내에서 온도에 따른 Fermi Level의 변화폭과 관련지어 설명하였다. x=0.1인 시편은 약 670K 에서 p - 형으로부터 n - 형으로 전도특성이 전환되었는데 이는 이온도에서 saturation영역에서 intrinsic영역으로 전이되며 전자의 이동도가 정공의 이동도보다 크다는 사실로부터 설명되었다.

The Effect of S130A Mutant of pharaonis Halorhodopsin on Ability of Chloride Binding and Photocycle

  • Bacteriorhodopsin (bR) and halorhodopsin (hR), which exist in the membrane of Halobacterium salinarum, are light-driven ion pumps. In spite of high similarity of primary and tertiary structures between bR and hR, these membrane proteins transport different ions, proton and chloride, in the opposite direction. From alignment of the amino acid sequences, Thr-89 of bR is homologous to Ser-l15 of hR from Halobacterium salinarum (shR). X-ray structure of shR has revealed that OH group of this residue directly interacts with CI$\^$-/ Thus, Ser-lI5 of shR is expected to play an important role in CI$\^$-/ binding and transport. In this study, we expressed wild type hR from Natronobacterium pharaonis (PhR) and Sl30A, which corresponds to Ser-l15 of shR, in E. coli in order to clarify binding affinity of chloride ion and photocycle reactions. From the titration with CI$\^$-/, affinity of Sl30A became quite lower than that of WT (WT 6 mM, Sl30A 89 mM). Furthermore, from the flash photolysis with pulse laser of λ$\_$max/ at 532 nm, the reaction rate of SI30A from 0 intermediate to hR ground state was found to become apparently slower than that of WT. The singular value decomposition (SVD) and global fitting analyses of the photocycles were performed to identify all photointermediates and determine the reaction rates.

Host-Guest Interactions Between Macrocycles and Methylsubstituted Anilinium Ions

  • The binding characteristics and analytical applications of anilinium ion complexes with 18-crown-6 were studied by polarography and NMR. First, the electrochemical reduction of the 10 species of mono and dimethylsubstituted anilinium ion complexes with 18-crown-6 as host in methanol are examined. The addition of 18-crown-6 to anilinium guest solution the polarographic waves remain well defined but shifted toward more negative potentials, indicating the complex formation. The values of formation constants, log Κ for 10 species of methylsubstituted anilinium ion complexes with 18-crown-6 varies from 2.7 to 4.8 in methanol at $25^{\circ}C$. The stability order of complexes for 18-crown-6 is anilinilum > 4-methyl > 3,4-dimethyl > 3-methyl > 3,5-dimethyl > 2,4-dimethyl > 2,5-dimethyl > 2,3-dimethyl > 2-methyl > 2,6-dimethylanilinium ion. The steric hindrance shows significant effect. Second, Proton NMR was used to elucidate their interaction characteristics. From the results of so called NMR titration techniques, the behaviors of binding sites on complexation, and the stoichiometry and stability order of complex were obtained. And the later results show the satisfactory agreement with the quantitative values obtained by polarography. Finally, the individual determinations of anilinium ion mixtures were also accomplished by addition of 18-crown-6. In some mixtures of methyl or dimethylanilinium ions the reduction peaks of differential pulse method appeared into one unresolved wave attributed to the small difference of half-wave potential, ${\Delta}E_{1/2}$. In the presence of 18-crown-6, the polarographic waves were resolved into individual maxima because of the shift toward more negative direction by the difference of selectivity of anilinium ions with 18-crown-6. It may be concluded that quantitative analysis of methylanilinium ion mixture make possible because the half-wave potential shift by the selectivity difference due to the steric hindrance between methyl group and 18-crown-6 on complexation.

단일 계단 응답에 근거한 Wiener형 비선형 공정의 간편한 모델 확인 방법 (Single Step Response Based Method for the Simple Identification of Wiener-type Nonlinear Process)

  • 동적 선형 블록과 정적 비선형 블록이 직렬로 연결되어 있는 Wiener형 비선형 모델은 여러 화학 공정의 동특성을 묘사하는데 널리 사용되는데, Wiener형 비선형 공정의 모델 확인은 다소 긴 공정 활성화 데이터가 필요하다. 본 연구는 이러한 단점을 보완하기 위하여 단일 계단 응답으로부터 Wiener형 비선형 공정 모델을 찾아낼 수 있는 새로운 모델 확인 방법을 제안한다. 제안된 방법은 계단 응답의 초기 응답으로부터 선형 동적 블록의 예측 응답을 얻어 선형 동적 블록의 모델을 확인하고, 이어서 비선형 정적 블록의 모델을 확인한다. 본 방법은 단일 계단 응답만을 사용하여 공정 모델 확인을 위해 필요한 공정 응답을 얻는 과정에서 시간과 비용적으로 큰 이득을 얻을 수 있다. 제안된 공정 확인 방법의 성능은 대표적인 Wiener형 비선형 공정인 pH 적정 공정과 액위 공정을 대상으로 검증되었다.

Al-Ce 산화물에 담지된 CuO 촉매상에서 저온 CO산화반응 (Low Temperature CO Oxidation over CuO Catalyst Supported on Al-Ce Oxide Support)

  • CuO의 함량이 반응활성에 미치는 영향을 조사하기 위하여 CuO(x)/0.3Al-0.7Ce (x = 2~20 wt%) 촉매를 함침법으로 제조하고 저온 CO 산화반응을 수행하였다. CuO(10)/0.3Al-0.7Ce 촉매가 반응물 중 수분의 존재 유무에 관계없이 가장 우수한 반응활성을 나타내었다. 수분의 존재는 활성점에 CO와의 경쟁흡착으로 활성점이 감소하여 50% CO 전환율 온도인 $T_{50%}$가 약 $50^{\circ}C$ 고온으로 이동되어 관찰되었다. $N_2O$-적정실험으로 구한 구리 표면적과 CO-펄스 실험으로 계산된 격자산소의 양은 CuO의 함량 증가에 따라 증가하였고, CuO(10)/0.3Al-0.7Ce 촉매에서 최대화되었다. 이러한 특성 분석결과는 사용된 촉매의 CO 산화반응에 대한 $T_{50%}$의 경향과 잘 일치하였다. 위의 특성분석 결과로부터, CuO(x)/0.3Al-0.7Ce 촉매의 CO 산화반응에 대한 반응성은 구리 표면적과 격자산소의 양과 밀접하게 관련된다고 결론지을 수 있다.
