  • The principal elements of the 31P NMR chemical shielding tensors have been determined for three binuclear platinum diphosphite complexes, K4[Pt2(P2O5H2)4·2H2O ("Pt2"), K4[Pt2(P2O5H2)4Cl2]·2H2O ("Pt2Cl2"), and K4[Pt2(P2O5H2)4Br2]·2H2O ("Pt2Br2"), by using a Herzfeld-Berger graphical method for interpreting the 31P MAS spectrum. The orientations of 31P chemical shielding tensor relative to the molecular axis system are partially assigned with combination of the longitudinal relaxation study of HPO32- and the reference to known tensor orientations of related sites; the most chemical shielding component, δ33, is directed along the P-Pt bond axis. A discussion is given in which the experimental principal elements of the 31P chemical shielding tensor are related with the Pt-Pt bond distances in binuclear platinum diphosphite complexes.

  • This work discusses a two-step electroless plating method for preparing a Pt thin film on p-type InGaAs substrate, which is defined as Pt I and Pt II. A thin Pt catalytic layer formed in Pt I bath on the substrate at $65^{\circ}C$. In the following Pt II bath, thick Pt films then easily grew on the sensitized layer on InGaAs previously formed in the Pt I bath. The growth of Pt film is strongly influenced by the plating temperature and pH value. To study the plating time effect, the plating of Pt II bath is 5 to 40 min at $80^{\circ}C$ after using Pt I bath at 50~$65^{\circ}C$ for 5min of pH 8~13. Pt film for ohmic contact to p-type InGaAs was successfully prepared by using the two-step Pt electroless plating.

  • We have investigated the effects of an external magnetic field on the growth direction and the grain size of electrochemically prepared CoPtP alloys. Electrodeposited CoPtP alloys were synthesized by appling an external magnetic field with 0 to 1 T to the perpendicular direction of the films. In the electrodeposited CoPtP alloys without external magnetic field, the growth direction of the alloys was mixed by fcc (111) and hop (002), but only hop (002) was observed in the alloys with 1 T external magnetic field. CoPtP alloys were grown as the columnar growth and the grain size increases with growing the alloys. With appling an external field, the grain size of the alloys was controlled less than 20 nm which is smaller than single domain of Co, and the easy axis of alloys, hcp (002) direction, was grown perpendicular to the films up to 200 nm. We could obtain the optimal thickness of the alloys and electrodeposition condition from the above results. Coercivity and squareness of CoPtP alloys taken out-of-plane are 6.1 kOe and 0.9, respectively. The magnetic properties of CoPtP alloys were measured by VSM, and the microstructural characterization and crystalline orientation measurement of the alloys were carried out by TEM and XRD.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effect of protease on the functionality of soymilk protein. The protease from Bacillus polymyxa was selected because of the least production of bitter taste and calcium-aggregation. The results are summarized as follows: 1. Solubility of SMP(soymilk protein) and SPI(soyprotein isolate) were lowest at pH 4.7 and increased as the pH value reached closer to either ends. PT-SMP(pretense treated soymilk protein) showed higher solubility at all pH range, especially at pH 4.7 than SMP, SPI. 2. Emulsion activity of three samples was lowest at pH 4.7 and significantly increased as pH approched higher acidic or alkaline regions. PT-SMP showed similar activity to other samples, but less stability. 3. Foam capacity of PT-SMP was lowest at pH 8 and increased in acidic, alkaline pH. PT-SMP showed higher foam capacity at all pH range, but lower foam stability than SMP and SPI. 4. PT-SMP showed higher heat coagulability than other samples at all pH range except pH 4.7.

  • Piezoelectric PMN-29PT single crystal multilayer actuators [100 $mm^2$ in cross section and 22 mm in length] are designed and fabricated by stacking square plates [$10{\times}10{\times}0.5(t)\;mm^3$] of PMN-29PT single crystals having a $d_{33}$ of about 1,500 pC/N. The characteristics of PMN-29PT multilayer actuators are compared with those of P-025.40P multilayer PZT ceramic actuators [490 $mm^2$ in cross section and 60 mm in length] produced by PI in Germany. Even though the total volume of the PMN-29PT single crystal multilayer actuator is only about 7.5% of that of the P-025.40P ceramic multilayer actuator, PMN-29PT single crystal multilayer actuators are expected to show very similar properties to P-025.40P ceramic actuators in terms of static stroke and blocking force. Therefore, on the basis of their smaller mass and volume compared to the conventional PZT ceramic multilayer actuators, piezoelectric PMN-29PT single crystal multilayer actuators have significant potential regarding the development of various high performance actuators for aerospace subsystems.

  • Platinum(II) complexes(where, $[Pt(L)_2X_2]$; L=isoxazole(isox), 3,5-dimethylisoxazole(3,5-diMeisox), 3-methyl,5-phenylisoxazole(3-Me,5-Phisox), and 4-amino-3,5-dimethylisoxazole(4-ADI); X=Cl, Br) with planar ligands are investigated on antitumor activity by MM2 and EHMO calculations. It was found that, the net atomic charges of the halogen atoms in all of cis-, trans-isomers are greater than that of the nitrogen with planar form, indicating that ionic character of Pt-X bond is greater than that of Pt-N. Also, the ${\sigma}MO$ energy level($E{\sigma}_{(Pt-X)}$) of the interaction between $d_{x2-y2}$ orbital of Pt atom and $p_x$ orbital of X found to be higher than that of between $d_{x2-y2}$ orbital of Pt atom and $p_x$ orbital of N about all the complexes. It is found that bond strength of between Pt and X atom is weaker than that of between Pt and N atom. The ${\sigma}MO$ energy level($E{\sigma}_{(Pt-X)}$) of trans- complexes found to be higher than that of cis- complexes, as a result of bond strength of Pt-X in cis- and trans-complexes, for all the complexes. The degree of dissociation of X atom in Pt-X bond for trans-complexes are related to antitumor activity and the logIA value of inhibitory activity coefficient(IA).

  • Podophyllotoxin (PT), a lignan compound from the roots and rhizomes of Podophyllum peltatum, has diverse pharmacological activities including anticancer effect in several types of cancer. The molecular mechanism of the anticancer effects of PT on colorectal cancer cells has not been reported yet. In this study, we sought to evaluate the anticancer effect of PT on human colorectal cancer HCT116 cells and identify the detailed molecular mechanism. PT inhibited the growth of cells and colony formation in a concentration-dependent manner and induced apoptosis as determined by the annexin V/7-aminoactinomycin D double staining assay. PT-induced apoptosis was accompanied by cell cycle arrest in the G2/M phase and an increase in the generation of reactive oxygen species (ROS). The effects of PT on the induction of ROS and apoptosis were prevented by pretreatment with N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC), indicating that an increase in ROS generation mediates the apoptosis of HCT116 cells induced by PT. Furthermore, Western blot analysis showed that PT upregulated the level of phospho (p)-p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK). The treatment of SB203580, a p38 inhibitor, strongly prevented the apoptosis induced by PT, suggesting that PT-induced apoptosis involved the p38 MAPK signaling pathway. In addition, PT induced the loss of mitochondrial membrane potential and multi-caspase activation. The results suggested that PT induced cell cycle arrest in the G2/M phase and apoptosis through the p38 MAPK signaling pathway by upregulating ROS in HCT116 cells.

  • A modified polyol process is developed to enhance Pt loading during the preparation of Pt/C catalysts. With the help of the zeta potential, the effect of pH on the electrostatic forces between the support and the Pt colloid is investigated. It is shown experimentally that the surface charge on the carbon support becomes more electropositive when the solution pH is changed from alkaline to acidic. However, this change does not affect the electronegative surface charge of Pt colloids already attained and stabilized by glycolate anions. This new behavior caused by the change in the solution pH accounts for the enhanced yield of the process and does not affect the Pt particle size. All our experimental results reveal that this simple modification is a cost effective method for the synthesis of highly Pt loaded Pt/C catalysts for fuel cells.

  • The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of low protein diets added with protease on growth performance, nutrient digestibility, and blood profiles of weaned piglets and growing-finishing pigs. A total of 96 weaned pigs ([Yorkshire × Landrace] × Duroc) with average body weight (BW) of 6.99 ± 0.21 kg were used in a 20-week experiment. The dietary treatments were arranged in a 2 × 3 factorial design. Treatments were as follows: In phase 1 (1-2 weeks), two protein levels as high protein (HP; 19.0%), low protein (LP; 17.0%), and three protease (PT) levels (PT0, 0%; PT1, 0.3%; and PT2, 0.5%); in phase 2 (3-4 weeks), protein levels (HP, 18.05%; LP, 16.15%) and protease levels (0%, 0.3%, and 0.5%); in phase 3 (5-12 weeks), protein levels (HP, 17.1%; LP, 15.3%) and protease level (0%, 0.15%, and 0.3%); in phase 4 (13-20 weeks), protein levels (HP, 16.15%; LP, 14.45%) and protease level (0%, 0.15%, and 0.3%). At 4 weeks and 20 weeks after treatment, BW was higher (p < 0.050) in the PT2 group than PT0 group. From weeks 0 to 4, average daily gain (ADG) and feed efficiency (G/F) were higher (p = 0.006 and p = 0.014; p = 0.014 and p = 0.044, respectively) in the PT2 group than PT0 and PT1 groups. From weeks 16 to 20, ADG and G/F were higher (p < 0.001 and p = 0.009; p = 0.004 and p = 0.033, respectively) in the PT2 group than PT0 and PT1 groups. Crude protein (CP) digestibility was higher (p = 0.013, p = 0.014, and p = 0.035, respectively) in the low protein (LP) group than high protein (HP) group at weeks 4, 12, and 20. At weeks 4 and 20, the LP diet group had lower (p < 0.001 and p = 0.001, respectively) blood urea nitrogen (BUN) levels than the HP diet group. Therefore, a low CP diet added with protease could increase growth performance and CP digestibility of weaned piglets and growing-finishing pigs.
