  • This study aimed at exploring male home economics(HE) teachers' identities through narrative inquiry. Considering experiences of HE teachers and diversity in regions, twelve male teachers were chosen, and in-depth interviews were conducted between June 1st and July 31st, 2019. The transcription of the data was transferred to the Hancom Office Hangeul 2010 while the researcher listened to the recordings of the interviews. The total amount of transcription data was 174 pages, and the data were analyzed through open coding, categorization, and category verification. The themes identified as results of this study were as follows: First, 'Coincidence: Breaking the Wall of Prejudice' is related to the experiences that have a great influence on the formation of identity as a male HE teacher: motivation to enter the HE department, educational practice, etc. Through this, the experience of becoming a male HE teacher was recorded. Second, 'Facing: Surviving as a male HE Teacher' captures the current story of male HE teachers and the perspectives of their fellow teachers, family, and friends about male HE teachers. In this section, male HE teachers showed how HE classes and assessments, and their experiences in their lives, influenced their identities. Third, 'Expectations: Growing as a HE teacher' is a story about the future of male HE teachers. The ideal teacher image pursued by male HE teachers was a practical teacher. They hoped that in 10 or 20 years, they would have smooth and professional relationship with students. They advise prospective male HE teachers to become a competent HE teacher regard less of their gender. The significance of this study is that it broke the stereotype of 'HE teachers should be female' and expanded the horizon of HE education by exploring the identities of male HE teachers.

  • This study aimed to investigate how the learners' mathematics learning processes change with repeatedly reading mathematical text. As a way to teach and learn mathematics, we also wanted to examine the effect of repeated reading and to explore the implications for a more efficient teaching and learning strategy. To help us with this study, we mainly used eye tracking and heart rate (HR) measurement. There were four cycles in a cycle of repeated reading, and the number of repeated readings for all cycles was fixed to three times. Eight prospective mathematics teachers in the Department of Mathematics Education of a National University in South Korea participated. Data were analyzed in five aspects: (1) the total reading time per round, the total reading time per slide; (2) the change trends of total reading time per round and slide; (3) the order of slides read; (4) the change trends of HR per round. We found that most participants read in a similar pattern in the first reading, but the second and third reading patterns appeared more diverse for each learner. Also, the first reading required the most time regardless of the repeat cycle, and the time it took to repeatedly read afterward varied depending on the individual. Based on the findings of this study, the most primary conclusion is that self-directed mathematics learning by using repeated reading is effective regardless of cycle. In addition, we suggested four strategies to improve the efficiency of this teaching and learning method.

  • The study aims to run a 'Process-based Evaluation' and find out its effectiveness in science classes for prospective elementary school teachers. The Process-based Evaluation performed in this study was performed during unit classes and scored when significance was recognized in the student's learning behavior. The conclusions based on the results of the study are as follows. First, students scored an average of 3.6 points on whether the process-oriented assessment conducted during class was appropriate as an assessment. Second, on the basis of the assessment presented by the students, the main positive content is "assessing the process, not the outcome", "contributing positively to class participation" and "promoting accident activities". Third, the negative contents of the assessment grounds presented by the students include 'lack of objectivity in evaluation methods and results', 'the individual tendencies of students are involved in evaluation results' and 'poor learning effects of the textbook knowledge'.

  • Some adequate programs for mathematising are necessary to pre-service mathematics teachers, if they can guide their prospective students in secondary school to make a mathematising. They should be used to mathematising. In this paper, mathematising teaching units for the inquiry into number partition models with constant differences are designed for this purpose. They guide a series of process to make nooumenon for organizing phainomenon which is organized already through number partition model. Especially the new nooumenon and the process of obtaining it are discussed. But it is restricted when the numbers for partitioning are natural numbers, and elements and their differences are integers. Through these teaching units, pre-service mathematics teachers can experience and practice secondary mathematising, as they go through the procedures which are similar with those of mathematicians making theorems.

  • With the recent rise in the use of AI-based online translation tools, interest in their methods and effects on education has grown. This study involved 30 prospective elementary school teachers who completed an English writing task using an AI-based online translation tool. The study focused on assessing the impact of these tools on English writing skills and their practical applications. It examined the usability, educational value, and the advantages and disadvantages of the AI translation tool. Through data collected via writing tests, surveys, and interviews, the study revealed that the use of translation tools positively affects English writing skills. From the learners' perspective, these tools were perceived to provide support and convenience for learning. However, there was also recognition of the need for educational strategies to effectively use these tools, alongside concerns about methods to enhance the completeness or accuracy of translations and the potential for over-reliance on the tools. The study concluded that for effective utilization of translation tools, the implementation of educational strategies and the role of the teacher are crucial.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationships among elementary school teachers' high school and college backgrounds in science, their attitudes toward teaching science, their science teaching efficacy beliefs, and their instructional strategies. Both quantitative and qualitative research methodologies, were utilized in this study. This paper, however, presents only the results of the quantitative data analysis while expecting to report the qualitative data analysis outcomes afterwards. Four instruments were used to ascertain information concerning teachers' backgrounds in science(the number of high school science courses they took and the grades of courses, the number of college science courses and grades, the number of college science methods courses and grades), attitudes toward teaching science, science teaching self-efficacy beliefs(personal science teaching efficacy and science teaching outcome expectancy), and their instructional strategies(indirect, direct, and mixed methods). A sample of 340 practicing elementary school teachers participated in this study. To determine statistically significant results, Pearson's correlation coefficient was used to relate teachers' backgrounds in science, attitudes toward teaching science, science teaching self-efficacy beliefs and their instructional strategies. The correlation coefficients were statistically significant regarding four variables, teachers' backgrounds in science, attitudes toward teaching science, science teaching self-efficacy beliefs, and instructional strategies investigated in this study. These results can be interpreted that programs of teacher preparations and trainings which include science and science methods courses should help prospective and practicing teachers change in their attitudes and beliefs toward science teaching. It is expected that future studies concerning teachers' attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors toward teaching science can help to improve science teacher education in Korea.

  • Purpose: This pilot study aimed to describe children's social contact patterns and to analyze factors related to their social contacts. Methods: The participants were 30 children aged ≥13 months to <7 years, whose teachers at childcare centers and parents at home were asked to maintain diaries of their social contacts prospectively for 24 hours. Data were collected from November 30, 2018, to January 7, 2019. Results: The 30 participating children were in contact with 363 persons in a 24-hours period (mean, 12.1±9.1). The number of contacts showed significant relationships with day of the week (p<.001), number of family members/cohabitants (p=.015), area of residence (p=.003), and type of housing (p=.002). A multiple regression model showed significantly higher numbers of contacts on weekdays (B=10.64, p=.010). Physical versus non-physical types of contact showed significant differences in terms of duration, location, and frequency (p<.001). The duration of contacts showed significant relationships with their location and frequency (p<.001), while the frequency of contacts was significantly related to their location (p<.001). Conclusion: This is the first survey describing the characteristics of Korean preschool children's social contacts. Further large-scale social contact studies of children should be conducted.

  • Advances in neonatal care system and research have resulted in an increased survival rate among low birth weight infants in the industrialized countries. Recent Korean neonatal mortality and morbidity statistics, and current status of Korean neonatal intensive care facilities were reviewed here for the sake of future improvement and research. Morbidity statistics revealed that perinatal diseases accounted for 80% of the death of premature infants implying the possibility of its reduction by the vigorous prenatal care service in future. On the basis of extensive studies of nutritional support and growth rate of premature infants, commercial formulas for premature infants have been developed and various aspects of feeding techniques are standardized. However, problem of growth deficit of premature infants remains unsolved as medical problem. NICU specialists are challenged with the tasks of prenatal education or provision of care that minimizes the neurodevelopmental problems seen in preterm infants, various short-term outcome researches have been reported and those are reviewed here to promote research interest in the field of neonatal nursing. Systemic long-term outcome studies are also awaited in Korea for the formulation of welfare policy in future. Nursing science has to embrace all these interdisciplinary studies as their own research field in collaboration with neonatologist, nutritionist, rehabilitation therapist, social workers and teachers.
