Problem-based learning has been considered as one of the effective educational methods in engineering education. However, in so far as professors who require practical insights in PBL and experiences of developing actual problems by subject, in particular, thorough understanding from experiences of PBL process as well as problem-development has not been sufficiently provided. The purpose of this paper is to present strategies focusing on problem design for PBL on engineering education. In order to do this, a literature review and a qualitative case study were performed. Especially, the study intended to identify differences and gap between professors' problems-development process and its output and those of authentic PBL. Professors were found that their PBL problems had lack of authenticity, consideration on experiences of students, and realistic thinking process. Professors in PBL had difficulty to link theory into real situation. In consequence, in designing a problem, we consider the followings; first, the problem should be designed based on real design process and its output. Second, the problem should be designed and implemented in all academic years for developing student's systematic and skillful thinking process. In conclusion, more supports are needed for engineering professors to extend their experiences of designing and developing actual problems that present real experience.
This study was carried out to propose the way to give substantial education for the students of Departments of Food and Nutrition in Junior College. Questionnaires were gathered from the professors of the Departments of Food and Nutrition in Junior Colleges. The results of this study could be summarized as follows. 1. The professors and assistant teachers appointed in Department of Food and Nutrition in Junior Colleges were insufficient in number showing the sufficiency proportion of 35.8% and 61% respectively. 2. Part time lecturers took charge of lectures on major subject up to 27%. 3. The academic backgrounds of all professors were above a master's degree, and the number of professors who were In the doctor's course and who had got doctor's degree amounted to 31.5% and 27.9% respectively. 4. The number of professors who had majored in the course of Food and Nutrition at university or at graduate school was the most and that of Food Engineering ranked the next. 5. The number of professors having careers in the fields of food and nutrition before the appointment to professor amounted to 32%. 6. The number of professors having domestic training managed by the Education Ministry amounted to 67.8%, but those having foreign training amounted to only 8.3%. 7. The number of domestic scientific journals subscribed by one professor was on an average 2.8, but that of foreign was only 0.8. 8. Each professor associated on an average 2.7 kinds of academic society, and published 3.6 pieces of thesis in the last three years. 9. The professors were comparatively satisfied with their present occupations, but they were dissatisfied with such points as deficiency of educational postulates, insufficient income, low level in intellectual faculties of their students and lack of social understanding.

The purpose of this study was to analyze on the convergence for knowledge fusion in the filed of the engineering, science, aesthetics, humanities and social sciences. For the study, the related literatures were reviewed focusing on the convergence in the basis of the inter-disciplinary. In addition, interviews with 5 professors in the field of the engineering, science, aesthetics, humanities and social sciences were analyzed. The keys of analysis were perspective of academic disciplines. The findings of this study were as follows; most of professors recognized the inter-disciplinary of engineering, science, aesthetics, humanities and social sciences. But, there were some barriers engineering of professors in inter-disciplinary.
The study to improve engineering students' performance in studying physics lacked despite of the importance of studying physics in engineering education. The cognitive belief and the motivational belief in studying physics had a strong effect on studying physics. The purpose of this study was to seek the educational way through comparing professors' expectations with students' beliefs about the cognitive belief and the motivational belief in studying physics. The cognitive belief in studying physics was considered as variables like 'knowledge', 'learning' and 'relation'. The motivational belief in studying physics was considered as variables like 'expectancy' and 'value'. It was the 'expectancy' that was the most different dimension between professors' expectations and students' beliefs. It means that students have little confidence in their abilities to study physics, though professors expect their students to be confident. Professor who teaches physics to engineering students recognize these differences, need to have interest in affective domains of beliefs to teach. In addition, there is need to teaching and learning strategies that can lead engineering students' beliefs about ability to perform the task, the purpose, importance, interesting for physics.
This paper examines the effects of major funding projects for graduate education in Korea, specifically the BK21 and the WCU programs, on the research productivity of professors and young researchers. We apply the standard DID method, which compares the increase in research outputs as measured by papers per year between groups before and during the project period. The DID estimates show that the effects are quite different for different fields, but they mostly indicate that the BK21 project is more effective in terms of the research productivity of the participating professors, especially those who study science and engineering areas. With regard to the productivity of graduate students, the results show that there was an increase in the research productivity of locally educated Korean doctoral degree holders after the graduate funding programs, mainly in natural science and engineering fields.

As a case study, we analyzed the professor's teaching professionalism in college of science-engineering based on pedagogical content knowledge. Two professors from the college of science-engineering located in Chungcheongbuk-do participated in this study. After collecting their syllabi, we observed their classes and conducted semi-structured interview before and after the classes. Analysis were conducted on their syllabi, taped videos, field notes and transcripts of the interview. As a result, both professors' orientation to teaching was not only related to learning subject matter knowledge, but also developing job competencies or communication skills. Their orientations were transformed according to the educational situation. After establishing the final learning goals, the professors organized weekly plan by listing the topics. However, they were unaware that the goals of each topic should be presented in detail in the class. Also, one of them presented a lack of understanding of the students' prior knowledge and showed low understanding of what aspects of the topics make students difficult to learn. In addition, the two professors applied various teaching strategies such as giving examples, questioning, and problem solving, but the degree of students' participation was not enough in the process of teaching. In the aspect of assessment, the professors had low understanding in students' achievement or feedback. Based on the results of the analysis, this study proposed methods and strategies for improving the teaching professionalism of science-engineering professors.

This study is a critical assessment of research productivity through publication among scientists and engineers. This study scrutinizes previous findings on the correlates and determinant3 of publication productivity: Provides overview and organization of that knowledge ; indicates gape and shortcomings n the research; and identifies the questions and issues which are both answered and unanswered. through the analysis of the 223 mail questionnaires collected from professors of mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, chemistry and physics, this study obtains the particular determinants of publication productivity at the science and engineering schools in Korea. Especially, early research productivity and the number of doctoral students are very important to publish good research articles. Also the qualities of professors' Ph. D. institution and employing university are critical influencing factors to publication productivity. The data are analyzed using correlation, ANOVA, and multiple regression analysis and all the regression models are statistically significant. All the variables in this study are focused on the socialization of individual research scientists and any psychological or personal background variables are excluded, because the perspective of this article is not that of scientific sociologist but of science and technology Policy interest. This study proves that there exists an scriptive advantage according to the individual background such as his Ph. D. institution and employing university in Korea. This study also shows that all research resources and research performances are unequally distributed. This result proposes that supporting basic research at university must begins with relative assessment of researchers, departments, and institutions in consideration with their research environment and to evaluate researchers in compared with excellent research university like SNU, KAIST, POSTECH is unequal and inadequate.
To develop a stalk detaching system the effect of shape factor of red pepper affecting the performance of unfolding, arranging and cutting was analysed. The obtained results are as follows : By cutting experiment, it was found that the bending of stalk affected the cutting rate of stalk, and that the bending of body increased the amount of peppers that were expelled from the cutting guide by conveying brush. The ratios, 'bending length of a body/body length'and 'bending length of a stalk/stalk length', could be used as criteria far abnormality of body and stalk of peppers, respectively. As a result of experiment, it was concluded that mechanical treatment would be difficult for the peppers with indexes greater than 0.4 and 0.3 fur body bending and stack bending. respectively. So, these indexes were used as criteria for distinguishing abnormality from normality of peppers. In the unfolding unit, conveyance of peppers was impossible for both of normal and abnormal ones at the inclination angle of 10°, especially, at the frequency of 8.3 Hz peppers maintained stationary state. At the inclination angle of 20°, both of normal and abnormal peppers showed similar tendencies, but abnormal ones showed an accumulation trend gradually with increased feeding speed. In the arranging unit, conveyance of peppers was almost impossible for both of normal and abnormal ones at the inclination angle of 20°, showing almost no difference between the conveyances of normal and abnormal ones. In the case of the inclination angle of 30°, at the condition of the feeding speeds and frequency corresponding 0.06 m/s, 0.08 m/s and 8.3 Hz, respectively, the passing time of the abnormal peppers on the arranging plate increased rapidly.
National competitiveness is related directly to the strength of educational competitiveness of universities. Seoul National University (SNU) has been taking efforts to improve its competitiveness in University education in variety of ways and the classroom assessment is one key example of those. The current classroom assessment system practiced at universities is being used to evaluate courses and professors in charge by the university administration or evaluation committee. The classroom assessment system is not intended to put students and professors as the subject of the evaluation. In this case, the evaluation is intended wrongfully to rank the courses and evaluate professors' achievement by assigning grades on the lectures. Instead, a proper classroom assessment system should be targeted to improve the quality of lectures by encouraging communication among professor and students in the classroom. In this study, it was intended to investigate a suitable classroom assessment system to enhance the effectiveness of education, not to rank the courses and evaluate professors' achievement. For this purpose, research has been carried out to investigate opinions of professors at SNU on the criteria of classroom assessment and to analyze the criteria of classroom assessment at other domestic universities in Korea. The inquiries for feedback on the lecture by the student in the class was analyzed. The current classroom assessment system at SNU was reviewed and an improvement plan was devised to evaluate liberal art courses of engineering and science schools at SNU. In this research, the problems in the classroom assessment system was reviewed and improvement points were searched to utilize the classroom assessment system more effectively for the improvement of lecture quality.
The final goal of this study is to develop the in-service program of engineering education for professors of engineering college. In this study, survey research method using questionnaire was used to engineering professors of universities and junior colleges. The study contents were analysis of in-service status and educational needs for professors of engineering college. Statistical package SPSS for windows, korean edition version 10.0, was used for analysing data. To do it, 97 questionnaire were used finally. Educational needs was divided into engineering teaching method, engineering evaluation method, and engineering basic competancy. Equation suggested by Borich was induced to calculate the educational needs. Results were that educational needs of engineering teaching method and engineering basic competency were high, respectively, but, educational needs of engineering evaluation method was low. It was known that we need to consider the results during in-service program development.
