  • This research was to evaluate microbial contamination levels in meat samples at hazard analysis critical control point (HACCP)-implemented processing plants that produce beef, pork, and chicken. During a period of about a year, a total of 178 samples (76 from beef, 89 from pork, and 13 from chicken) were obtained from raw materials (21.3%) and final products (78.7%). All samples were determined for each 25 g homogenized one. Samples were analyzed to determine the total aerobic plate count (APC), coliform count (CC), and E. coli count (ECC). By month, APC levels were the highest in September and the lowest in February (p<0.001). In comparison among season, APC levels in meat samples were the highest in the summer and the lowest in winter (p<0.001). By month, the highest CC prevalence was found in August, followed by October and then July (p<0.001). By season, the highest CC was obtained in summer, followed by autumn and then spring (p<0.001). All samples were negative for ECC. There was a direct correlation between the product form and coliform presence (p<0.001). In addition, there was a positive correlation between the APC and CC (r=0.261). The APCs in analyzed samples ranged from below <$10^1CFU/g$ to <$10^7CFU/g$. In conclusion, the month and season had significant effects on microbial contamination levels at HACCP implemented processing plants. Interrelationships between (i) the product form and coliform, (ii) the APC and CC were revealed.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the serotype, and antimicrobial susceptibility and analyze the plasmid profile for the 145 isolates of L. monocytogenes isolated from livestock products and these product processing plants in Gyeongnam, Korea. All of L. monocytogenes strains belonged to serotype 1/2b (57.9%), 1/2a (20.0%), 4b (11.4%), 1/2c, 3b, 4c (each 2.9%) and 4d (0.7%). Serotype 1/2b, 1/2a, 4b from each source were found predominantly. Serotype 1/2b was predominantly higher than other serotype, and there was no significant difference between serotypes isolated from livestock products and product processing plants. 4b was major serotype isolated from raw milk and pork, and serotypes isolated from beef, chickens and slaughterhouse were 1/2b and 1/2a. The susceptibility of 145 strains of L. monocytogenes to 14 antibiotics commonly used in veterinary and human therapy was determined by disk diffusion method. All of L. monocytogenes strains were susceptible to amikacin, ampicillin, cephalothin, chloramphenicol, gentamicin, kanamycin, neomycin and penicillin. L. monocytogenes strains had the highest resistance with colistin (100%), oxytetracycline (44.8%), tetracycline (43.4%) followed by erythromycin (2.8%), spectinomycin (1.4%) and streptomycin (0.7%). Tetracycline resistance, and serotype distribution of the isolates from sample sources were significantly different. Resistance to at least one antibiotic was observed in all of them and 7 different resistant profiles were recorded. The most common resistance pattern were CL-OTC-TC (colistin-oxytetracycline-tetracycline) (42.8%). Among all tested isolates, two different plasmid profiles were observed. Of the 97 examined strains, 14 (14.4%) contained either the 8 and 11 kb plasmid or the 11 kb.

  • In this paper, a new decoding scheme is proposed to improve the error correcting performance of low-density parity-check (LDPC) codes in high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) region by using post-processing. It behaves as follows: First, a conventional LDPC decoding is applied to received LDPC codewords one by one. Then, we count the number of word errors in a predetermined number of decoded codewords. If there is no word error, nothing needs to be done and we can move to the next group of codewords with no delay. Otherwise, we perform a proper post-processing which produces a new soft-valued codeword (this will be fully explained in the main body of this paper) and then apply the conventional LDPC decoding to it again to recover the unsuccessfully decoded codewords. For the proposed decoding scheme, we adopt a simple product code structure which contains LDPC codes and simple algebraic codes as its horizontal and vertical codes, respectively. The decoding capability of the proposed decoding scheme is defined and analyzed using the parity-check matrices of vertical codes and, especially, the combined-decodability is derived for the case of single parity-check (SPC) codes and Hamming codes used as vertical codes. It is also shown that the proposed decoding scheme achieves much better error correcting capability in high SNR region with little additional decoding complexity, compared with the conventional LDPC decoding scheme.

  • Consumer knowledge has been discussed as an important concept to understand information processing such as information search and evaluation process. It has been defined as the amounts and contents of information in consumer's memory accumulated by experiences. According to literature review, experts who have much knowledge are likely to retrieve their information related to products for a purchase efficiency. Therefore, they are likely to simplify the information processing for a choice. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between clothing product knowledge and evaluative criteria for a purchase. The results were as follows; First, it was found out that evaluative criteria were composed of four dimensions such as the management, the esthetic, the fitness and the brand. Therefore, it is implied that evaluative criteria for purchasing clothing products were multidimensional. Second, the level of objective knowledge was low, and consumers perceived that they didn't have much knowledge related with clothing products. Also, the relationships between objective and subjective knowledge were positive but low. Third, the evaluative criteria were effected by the level of consumer's knowledge significantly. In subjective knowledge, the subjects in a high group considered all criteria more deeply than in a low group. But there was a significant difference only in the esthetic between two groups in objective knowledge. The results of this study imply that consumer knowledge may influence evaluation process. Knowledgeable consumer would consider product attributes deeply for evaluating clothing products, and especially, the esthetic would be an important factor as an attribute including the instrumental and expressive functions in a purchase phase. Therefore, consumer knowl- edge would be a basis of predicting expert's information processing and managing heavy buyer or loyal consumers in apparel industry.

  • In this study we consider a CONWIP system in which the processing times at each station follow a Coxian distribution and the demands for the finished products arrive according to a compound Poisson process. The demands that are not satisfied immediately are either backordered or lost according to the number of demands that exist at their arrival Instants. For this system we develop an approximation method to calculate performance measures such as steady state probabilities of the number of parts at each station, proportion of lost demands and the mean number of backordered demands. For the analysis of the proposed CONWIP system, we model the CONWIP system as a closed queueing network with a synchronization station and analyze the closed queueing network using a product-form approximation method. A recursive technique is used to solve the subnetwork in the application of the product-form approximation method. To test the accuracy of the approximation method, the results obtained from the approximation method are compared with those obtained by simulation. Comparisons with simulation show that the approximation method provides fairly good results.

  • In an online shopping site or offline store, products purchased by each customer over time form the purchase history of the customer. Also, in most retailers, products have a product taxonomy, which represents a hierarchical classification of products. Considering the product taxonomy, the lower the level of the category to which two products both belong, the more similar the two products. However, there has been little work on similarity measures for sequences considering a hierarchical classification of elements. In this paper, we propose new similarity measures for purchase histories considering not only the purchase order of products but also the hierarchical classification of products. Unlike the existing methods, where the similarity between two elements in sequences is only 0 or 1 depending on whether two elements are the same or not, the proposed method can assign any real number between 0 and 1 considering the hierarchical classification of elements. We apply this idea to extend three existing representative similarity measures for sequences. We also propose an efficient computation method for the proposed similarity measures. Through various experiments, we show that the proposed method can measure the similarity between purchase histories very effectively and efficiently.

  • In Muju County, one of Korea's major apple producers, the regional agricultural cooperatives united together and invested to establish a cooperative joint business corporation in charge of the sales business. The corporation carried out the sales business transferred from the participating regional agricultural cooperatives. While the two participating cooperatives showed a marked difference in the degree of participation at the beginning of the business, the introduction of the agricultural product processing centers (APCs) and the participation of co-selection and shipment organizations and general farms helped settle this gap. In addition, commercialization through the APCs enhanced the market competitiveness of apples, which led to the stable securing of sales outlets. The corporation integrated the sales business in the county and this resulted in increased sales volume and sales revenue. Playing a leading role in introducing and cultivating new crops on a trial basis, the corporation demonstrated its potential as the main body of the joint sales business.

  • Variability of the software product line that differentiates member products within a product line must be described with precise meaning and visualized so as easy to select. Moreover, it should be easy to manage. Variability description approaches can largely be divided into two approaches, integrated variability description approach and orthogonal variability description approach. Orthogonal Variability Description Language (OVDL) was developed for clear and precise description of variability without ambiguity. This paper validates the variability description capability of OVDL by translating the variability models of Inter-Working Function (IWF) product line described by using Orthogonal Variability Model (OVM) notations into variability descriptions in OVDL.

  • The qualities of the products produced by injection molding are strongly influenced by the process variables of the injection molding machine set by the engineer. It is very difficult to predict the qualities of the injection molded product considering the stochastic nature of the manufacturing process, since the processing conditions have a complex impact on the quality of the injection molded product. It is recognized that the artificial neural network(ANN) is capable of mapping the intricate relationship between the input and output variables very accurately, therefore, many studies are being conducted to predict the relationship between the results of the product and the process variables using ANN. However in the condition of a small number of data sets, the predicting performance and robustness of the ANN model could be reduced due to too many input variables. In the present study, the ANN model that predicts the length of the injection molded product for multiple combinations of process variables was developed. And the accuracy of each ANN model was compared for 8 process variables and 4 important process inputs that were determined by the feature selection. Based on the comparison, it was verified that the performance of the ANN model increased when only 4 important variables were applied.
