  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to propose a new useful suggestion to monitor the stability of process by developing a stability ratio or index related to investigating how well the process is controlled or operated to the specified target. Methods: The proposed method to monitor the stability of process is building up a new measure index which is making up for the weakness of the existing index in terms of short or long term period of production. This new index is a combined one considering both stability and capability of process to the specification limits. We suppose that both process mean and process variation(or deviation) are changing on time period. Results: The results of this study are as follows: regarding the stability of process as well as capability of process, it was shown that two indices, called SI(stability index) and PI(performance index), can be expressed in two-dimensional X-Y graph simultaneously. This graph is categorized as 4 separated partitions, which are characterized by its numerical value intervals of SI and PI which are evaluated by test statistics. Conclusion: The new revised index is more robust than the existing one in investigating the stability of process in terms of short and long period of production, even in case both process mean and variation are changing.

  • Su, pp.ier quality plays a major role in the evaluation of su, pp.iers, making it very necessary to develop a proper quality measure useful in selecting su, pp.iers that is able to meet quality specification of the customer. In this paper, we present a measure of the overall quality performance which is a weighted geometric mean of the process capability indices of the quality characteristics of a su, pp.ier. This measure can be used both as a measure of su, pp.ier selection for the customer and as a measure for the self-analysis of the quality performance for the su, pp.ier.

  • To find any effects of precipitation climate on the forecast verification methods, we processed the hourly records of precipitation over South Korea. We examined their relationship between the climate and the methods of verification. Precipitation is an intermittent process in South Korea, generally less than an hour or so. Percentile ratio of precipitation period against the entire period of the records is only 14% in the hourly amounts of precipitation. The value of the forecast verification indices heavily depends on the climate of rainfall. The direct comparison of the index values might force us to have a mistaken appraisal on the level of the forecast capability of a weather forecast center. The size of the samples for verification is not crucial as long as it is large enough to satisfy statistical stability. Our conclusion is still temporal rather than conclusive. We may need the amount of precipitation per minute for the confirmation of the present results.

  • Tracking and exploiting instantaneous spectrum opportunities are fundamental challenges in opportunistic spectrum access (OSA) in presence of the bursty traffic of primary users and the limited spectrum sensing capability of secondary users. In order to take advantage of the history of spectrum sensing and access decisions, a sequential decision framework is widely used to design optimal policies. However, many existing schemes, based on a partially observed Markov decision process (POMDP) framework, reveal that optimal policies are non-stationary in nature which renders them difficult to calculate and implement. Therefore, this work pursues stationary OSA policies, which are thereby efficient yet low-complexity, while still incorporating many practical factors, such as spectrum sensing errors and a priori unknown statistical spectrum knowledge. First, with an approximation on channel evolution, OSA is formulated in a multi-armed bandit (MAB) framework. As a result, the optimal policy is specified by the wellknown Gittins index rule, where the channel with the largest Gittins index is always selected. Then, closed-form formulas are derived for the Gittins indices with tunable approximation, and the design of a reinforcement learning algorithm is presented for calculating the Gittins indices, depending on whether the Markovian channel parameters are available a priori or not. Finally, the superiority of the scheme is presented via extensive experiments compared to other existing schemes in terms of the quality of policies and optimality.

  • The usefulness of the multi-temporal satellite image to monitoring the vegetation recovery process after forest fire was tested. Using multi-temporal Landsat TM and ETM+data, NDVI and NBR changes over times were analyzed. Both NDVI and NBR values were rapidly decreased after the fire and gradually increased for all forest type and damage class. However, NBR curve showed much clearer tendency of vegetation recovery than NDVI. Both indices yielded the lowest values in severely damaged red pine forest. The results show the vegetation recovery process after forest fire can detect and monitor using multi-temporal Landsat image. NBR was proved to be useful to examine the recovering and development process of the vegetation after fire. In the not damaged forest, however the NDVI shows more potential capability to discriminate the forest types than NBR..

  • The purpose of this study is to evaluate the results for the quality assurance through a statistical analysis on the output characteristics of linear accelerators belonging to Yeungnam University Medical Center by using the Shewhart-type chart, Exponentially weighted moving average chart (EWMA) chart, and process capability indices $C_p$ and $C_{pk}$. To achieve this, we used the output values measured using respective treatment devices (21EX, 21EX-S, and Novalis Tx) by medical physicists every month from September, 2012 to April, 2014. The output characteristics of treatment devices followed the IAEA TRS-398 guidelines, and the measurements included photon beams of 6 MV, 10 MV, and 15 MV and electron beams of 4 MeV, 6 MeV, 9 MeV, 12 MeV, 16MeV, and 20 MeV. The statistical analysis was done for the output characteristics measured, and was corrected every month. The width of control limit of weighting factors and measurement values were calculated as ${\lambda}=0.10$ and L=2.703, respectively; and the process capability indices $C_p$ and $C_{pk}$ were greater than or equal to 1 for all energies of the linear accelerators (21EX, 21EX-S, and Novalis Tx). Measured values of output doses with drastic and minor changes were found through the Shewhart-type chart and EWMA chart, respectively. The process capability indices $C_p$ and $C_{pk}$ of the treatment devices in our institution were, respectively, 2.384 and 2.136 for 21EX, 1.917 and 1.682 for 21EX-S, and 2.895 and 2.473 for Novalis Tx, proving that Novalis Tx has the most stable and accurate output characteristics.

  • This study attempts to develop indices in order to make an objective and effective evaluation of achievements in the first stage of operation of the Rural Village Development Project(RVDP) (the first 3 years of its operation). The results are as follows 1. Evaluation purposes are expansion of income-generating bases, improvement of living environments, strengthening of village's competence and establishment of an effective project's management system. 2. Evaluation items for the first three evaluation purposes, which are income-generating bases, improvement of living environments and strengthening of village's competence, are record of performance and substantiality in project's operation, results from operation, and capability in managing the project. Those for establishment of an effective project's management system are participation of habitants and the projects's management system. 3. As this study aims to develop the indices which can evaluate the state of operation in the interim of the project's operation and outcomes generated by then, the evaluation indices are selected by considering those criterions of representativeness, accessibility, usefulness and reliability. 4. As the indices developed in this study efficiency evaluate the process of project's operation and thus evaluate basically the project's operation on the basis of its efficiency. But, considering the purposes of the RVDP, it is included for the overall project's management system and plans for managing activities of the project to be evaluated on the basis of effectiveness.

  • Up-to-date enlargement of the scale of global outsourcing has brought about the need of systematic and efficient tools for competitive supplier discovery located in various areas. A web-based business supporting system, referred to as Excellent Manufacturer Scouting System(EMSS), is being developed to serve core business functions including supplier discovery, negotiation, and collaboration between overseas buyers and domestic suppliers throughout the process of supply chain formation. In this paper, a supplier assessment model devoted to evaluation of core manufacturing capability is proposed by targeting small and medium sized mold companies. The assessment model will eventually be loaded to EMSS. Even if many well-designed models for supplier assessment have been presented in literature, most of them limit the evaluation criteria to somewhat general information on a given supplier, such as cost, delivery time, quality, rather than core manufacturing capability itself. This research is pioneering work on supplier assessment from the viewpoint of manufacturability. The proposed assessment model classifies assessment indices into six criteria, which have been drawn by intensive survey and analysis of the mold industry. Actual assessment indices for each criterion are also presented along with an exemplary evaluation result.

  • The purpose of this paper is to study the links between manufacturing strategy and change programs of manufacturing firms in Korea. The nature of our analysis is more descriptive than normative or confirmative. First, we investigate the linkage between manufacturing strategy, manufacturing capability, change programs and performance measurement systems. Secondly, we intend to explore an empirical typology of manufacturing strategy and change programs. The initial findings of the study are as follows: Linkage between manufacturing strategy and change programs of manufacturing firms was not apparent. Flexibility as a strategic priority is positively related to the innovative change programs. There are two distinctive strategies of manufacturing firms in Korea, namely, quality strategy and balanced strategy. We identified three types of change programs, which are incremental change, administrative innovation, and process innovation. Incremental change group has represented low factor score in the change program dimensions. The firms in administrative innovation group mainly depend on information systems and business reengineering. Korean manufacturing firms seem to pursue process improvement by trying simultaneously incremental change in the process, managerial process improvement, and a little bit of innovative change. Performance variable utilization of the firms are not significantly different along with manufacturing strategies and change programs. We found, however, learning and improvement performance dimension is significantly related to flexibility variables. Process innovation group marked high score in usage of learning and improvement indices. The findings of this study seem to have various implications on realigning the manufacturing strategy, change programs, and performance systems in Korean firms.

  • This paper proposes a simple but effective design method of PID control using a numerical optimization method. In order to achieve both stability and performance, gain and phase margins and performance indices of step response directly compose of the cost function. Hence, the proposed approach is a multiobjective optimization problem. The main effectiveness of this approach results from the strong capability of the used optimization method. A one-dimensional example concerning gain margin illustrates the practical applicability of the optimization method. The present approach has many degrees of freedom in controller design by only adjusting related weight constants. The attained PID controller is compared with Wang#s and Ho#s methods, IAE, and ISE for a high-order process, and the simulation result for various design targets shows that the proposed approach achieves desired time-domain performance with a guarantee of frequency-domain stability.
