  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of temperament and stress coping strategies on adolescents' psychological well-being. Three hundred and ninety nine middle and high school students in Seoul participated in this study. Temperament, stress coping strategies, and psychological well-being were evaluated by self-report questionnaires. Data were analyzed using Cronbach's alpha, frequencies, percentiles, means, standard deviations, two-way ANOVAs, Pearson's correlations and hierarchical multiple regression analyses. The results were as follows: First, there were significant differences in psychological well-being as a function of gender and school levels. Second, temperament and stress coping strategies were related to psychological well-being in adolescents. In the sub factor of temperament, activity and persistency were positively associated with psychological well-being, whereas rigidity was negatively related to psychological well-being. Among stress coping strategies, problem-focused strategy was positively associated with psychological well-being, whereas emotion-discharge strategy and affective-regulation strategy were negatively related to psychological well-being. Third, hierarchical multiple regression revealed that problem-focused strategy and emotion-discharge strategy were influential factors in explaining the level of psychological well-being controlling for gender, school levels and temperament of the adolescents. These findings suggest that stress coping strategy should be considered to promote the level of psychological well-being of adolescents.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of empathic ability and campus life stress on the stress coping behaviors among 395 dental hygiene students. The analysis was performed using PASW Statistics ver. 18.0, and the following conclusions were obtained. The empathic concern factor was the highest in the subscale of empathic ability (3.60). The interpersonal relationship stress was 1.65 and the task-related stress was 2.72. The stress coping behaviors were the highest among the sub-domains, with 3.69 for wishful thinking. The differences of stress coping behaviors according to general characteristics were as follows. The lower the age and grade, the higher the problem-focused coping; when they were religious there was a high pursuit of seeking social support. When they were satisfied with their economic level, wishful thinking was high. There was a low negative correlation between empathic concern and interpersonal relationship stress in campus life (p<0.01). There was a positive correlation between personal distress and task-related stress (p<0.001). The relationship between empathic ability and stress coping behaviors was most associated with personal distress and wishful thinking. Among the sub-domains of stress coping behaviors, factors that have a common impact on personal distress and seeking social support are viewpoint acceptance. Factors supporting emotional focus and wishful thinking were task-related stress. Dental hygiene students are not able to completely eliminate the stress that they are actually under. However, as the research results show, it is necessary to use stress coping techniques to cope effectively with individual tendencies and situations, and to improve the ability to sympathize with another individual.

  • The purpose of this study was to explore the effects of difficult temperament and mothers' reactions to child negative emotion on child emotion regulation strategies. Mothers of 253 preschoolers(Mage=4.04yrs.) responded to questionnaires on child temperament, mothers' reactions to child negative emotion, and child emotion regulation strategy. The results of regression analysis revealed that; 1) child difficult temperament positively predicted child's aggressive or outburst/appealing strategies whereas negatively predicted avoidance/none strategy; 2) child difficult temperament was not the variable predicting positive coping strategy, but mothers' emotion-focused or problem-focused reactions predicted child positive coping strategy whereas punitive or distress reactions predicted either aggressive or avoidance/none strategy; 3) child temperament moderated the link between mothers' reactions to child's negative emotion expression and child emotion regulation strategies. In particular, children with higher difficult temperament showed higher aggressive strategy under mothers' higher distress or punitive reaction and lower emotion focused or problem focused reaction. On the other hand, children with lower difficult temperament only showed avoidance/ none strategy when mothers showed higher minimization or punitive reaction. The results of current study underscore both child temperament, mothers' reactions and their interactions in predicting child emotion regulation strategies.

  • Objectives : The purpose of this study is to investigate the minor stress in daily life related to undergoing hemodialysis and the relationship between minor stresses, coping skills, and subjective quality of life among the patients with end stage renal disease. Methods : Seventy seven patients on hemodialysis were enrolled in this study. Minor stress was assessed with daily stress inventory-Korean version(K-DSI), ways of coping checklist identified the use of the following coping strategies:problem-focused, seek social support, emotion-focused coping and wishful thinking. Socio-demographic data were obtained and World Health Organization-Quality of Life Scale(brief form) was also administered to subjects. Results : Participants mean age was 55.92±13.71 years. The mean of the event, impact and impact/event (I/E) ratio scores of K-DSI were 29.06±21.57, 88.69±75.88 and 2.92±1.11, respectively. These scores were much higher than normative data of K-DSI. Among the 5 categories of this inventory, the scores of cognitive stressors were highest. 5 categories of the inventory showed positive relationship with way of coping subscales, which showed coefficient of correlation between 0.259(p<.01) and 0.495(p<.001). However, no significant correlation was found between minor stress subscales and quality of life. Hemodialysis patients in our study used more emotional-focused coping methods, which was considered as passive way of cope than problem-orientated coping methods. Conclusion : The main findings of this study indicated that patients on hemodialysis showed higher level of perceived minor stress than normal population. The patients treated with hemodialysis tend to use passive way of coping primarily. For assessing the stress in patients on hemodialysis, clinician has to consider both level of perceived minor stress and the ways of coping the patients primarily use.
