• The influence of observations on the misclassification probability in multiple discriminant analysis under the equal covariance assumption is investigated by the local influence method. Under an appropriate perturbation we can get information about influential observations and outliers by studying the curvatures and the associated direction vectors of the perturbation-formed surface of the misclassification probability. We show that the influence function method gives essentially the same information as the direction vector of the maximum slope. An illustrative example is given for the effectiveness of the local influence method.

  • This letter presents an alternative analytical expression for computing the probability of an M-ary phase shift keying (MPSK) wedge-shaped region in an additive white Gaussian noise channel. The expression is represented by the cumulative distribution function of known noncentral F-distribution. Computer simulation results demonstrate the validity of our analytical expression for the exact computation of the symbol error probability of an MPSK system with phase error.

  • A systematic procedure of probability analysis for general distributions is developed based on the first four moments estimated from polynomial interpolation of the system response function and the Pearson system. The function approximation is based on a specially selected experimental region for accuracy and the number of function evaluations is taken equal to that of the unknown coefficient for efficiency. For this purpose, three error-minimizing conditions are proposed and corresponding canonical experimental regions are formed for popular probability. This approach is applied to study the stochastic properties of the performance functions of a MEMS structure, which has quite large fabrication errors compared to other structures. Especially, the vibratory micro-gyroscope is studied using the statistical moments and probability density function (PDF) of the performance function to be the difference between resonant frequencies corresponding to sensing and driving mode. The results show that it is very sensitive to the fabrication errors and that the types of PDF of each variable also affect the stochastic properties of the performance function although they have same the mean and variance.

  • A mismatch between the training and the test conditions often causes a drastic decrease in the performance of the speech recognition systems. In this paper, non-linear transformation techniques based on histogram equalization in the acoustic feature space are studied for reducing the mismatched condition. The purpose of histogram equalization(HEQ) is to convert the probability distribution of test speech into the probability distribution of training speech. While conventional histogram equalization methods consider only the probability distribution of a test speech, for noise-corrupted test speech, its probability distribution is also distorted. The transformation function obtained by this distorted probability distribution maybe bring about miss-transformation of feature vectors, and this causes the performance of histogram equalization to decrease. Therefore, this paper proposes a new method of calculating noise-removed probability distribution by using assumption that the CDF of noisy speech feature vectors consists of component of speech feature vectors and component of noise feature vectors, and this compensated probability distribution is used in HEQ process. In the AURORA-2 framework, the proposed method reduced the error rate by over $44\%$ in clean training condition compared to the baseline system. For multi training condition, the proposed methods are also better than the baseline system.

  • The survivability of the naval ship is the capability of a warship to avoid or withstand a hostile environment. The survivability of the naval ship assessed by three categories (susceptibility, vulnerability and recoverability). The magnitude of susceptibility of a warship encountering with threat is dependent upon the attributes of detection equipment and weapon system. In this paper, as a part of a naval ship's survivability analysis, an assessment process model for the ship's susceptibility analysis technique is developed. Naval ship's survivability emphasizing the susceptibility is assessed by the probability of detection, and the probability of hit. Considering the radar cross section (RCS), the assessment procedure for the susceptibility is described. It's emphasizing the simplified calculation model based on the probability density function for probability of hit. Assuming the probability of hit given a both single-hit and multiple-hit, the susceptibility is accessed for a RCS and the hit probability for a rectangular target is applied for a given threat.

  • In this paper, we study the saddlepoint approximations for the ratio of independent random variables. In Section 2, we derive the saddlepoint approximation to the probability density function. In Section 3, we represent a numerical example which shows that the errors are small even for small sample size.
