The purpose of this study was to provide basic materials needed to enhance quality of organizational life by identifying the improvements of labor union management in the perspective of hospital organization management. Materials were collected from administrators, nurses and medical technicians in target hospitals from March 3 to March 3 to March 30, 2010 through survey questionnaires. The main results of this study were as follows: 1. The commitment level of the subjects according to their satisfaction was higher when the administrators both in Private hospitals and Public hospitals were not satisfied in their works. 2. The commitment level of the subjects according to the subjects' job dedication level was higher those who had higher emotional attachment to their job in all vocations in both Private hospitals and Public hospitals. 3. The commitment level of the subjects according to the subjects' labor union involvement was higher in those who had higher satisfaction in labor union and perceived their colleagues' attitudes more positively in all vocations in both Private Hospitals and Public Hospitals. 4. From the results of multiple regression analysis to identify major influencing factors of labor union commitment level, In Private hospital employees, those who had senior officer posts in labor union and higher normative commitment showed higher commitment union. Therefore hospital managers should have democratic and flexible attitudes toward labor union. Additionally, as colleagues attitudes is important determinant in union commitment, hospital managers should have countermeasures to enhance the work atmosphere of hospital employees.
Objectives : The rapidly changing consumer-centric and customer-oriented nature of the medical environment results in significant cognitive load. We aimed to clarify the situation of emotional labor and job stress among hospital employees and seek policies and hospital management for employees' emotions. Methods : The study was conducted through a questionnaire about emotional labor and job stress among 554 individuals working in Seoul, in 9 national, public, and private hospitals. Results : The results of the emotional labor and job stress questionnaire showed statistically significant differences in surface behavior and job stress; both had higher values in employees from the private hospitals than employees from public hospitals. Conclusions : This study found that the stress of emotional labor is a serious problem in government medical institutions. In addition, these institutions need to provide internal customer satisfaction through the hospital ombudsman and harmonize work and healing programs by including plans for improvement.
Purpose / Approach : This study aims to analyze the level of public service motivation and its antecedents by using survey data of 1,498 professional employees in public and private hospitals. Findings : Among job-related, organization-related, and socialization-related factors of professional employees, the socialization factors have a strong effect on individual's overall and the four sub-dimensions of public service motivation. While the effect of organizational identification is prominent in the public hospital, professional identification is more powerful in the private hospital. Person-job fit and person-organizational value fit also play a significant role in determining public service motivation. Organizational vision salience in public hospital has negative effect on public service motivation and attraction-to-public-service dimension. The significant determinants and its effect size are different according to hospital type and each sub-dimension of public service motivation. Practical Implications : The empirical findings show that individual's level of public service motivation in hospitals could be enhanced through the interaction between individual and their organization, and various organization-related factors. Further implications of the study are discussed from human resource management perspective in hospitals.

Objectives Many studies have reported noticeable increases in the proportion of employees working either relatively short or relatively long hours. Such trends have been accompanied by an increasing concern that how much subjective mental well-being of employees would be influenced by their hours of work. The aim of this study was to investigate the association between work hours and clinically relevant depressive symptoms with demographic variables adjusted. Methods Participants were employees of a total of 56 private companies and local government organizations in Korea, aged 19 to 65 years. A self-report questionnaire that included items on working hour, job stress, levels of depression, and socio-demographic factors was administered to 15360 Korean employees, with 14477 valid responses. Hierarchical linear regression analyses, adjusted for sociodemographic factors, job related demographic factors, job stress, were used additionally to estimate the association between working hours and depressive scores. Results We found that working more than 40 hours per week correlated positively with the level of depressive symptoms after adjusting for demographic variables and the level of job stress. Furthermore, working 40 or fewer hours per week correlated negatively with the level of depressive symptoms. Being younger (β = -0.078, β = -0.099), being a female (β = 2.770, β = 1.268), and possessing a lower level of education (β = -0.315, β = -1.125) were significantly associated with higher level of depressive symptoms in all respondents. Conclusions Both of working excessively long or short hours is significantly associated with the prevalence of depressive symptoms. Establishing proper office hours for employees is critical to improving the quality of working conditions and maintaining good mental health in the workplace.
This study examined the perceptions of emotional labor among the National General Hospital and Private General Hospital in Chungcheong area. The purpose of this study is to examine the perceptions difference of public and private general hospitals. In addition, we tried to analyze the effect of emotional labor on organizational commitment by distinguishing between workers in National and Private General Hospitals. The purpose of this study is to provide the theoretical base data for mitigating emotional labor of hospital workers in the future. The results of the analysis are as follows: First, In the case of employees working at the National General Hospital, the influence of the emotional labor of the hospital workers on the organizational commitment of the hospital workers increased as the frequency of emotional expression increased. However, it was found that as attentiveness of emotional expression and emotive dissonance deepened, the degree of organizational commitment of hospital workers decreased. On the other hand, the influence of emotional labor of the hospital workers on the organizational commitment of the hospital workers in the Private General Hospital was found to be better in the organizational commitment as they pay more attention to emotional expression. However, in the case of emotive dissonance, The more deeply emotive dissonance, the less the organizational commitment of Private General Hospital workers. Second, the frequency of emotional expression in the hospital workers' perception difference of emotional labor was higher than that of the National General Hospitals. However, in the variety of emotional expression, it was confirmed that the employees of the Private General Hospitals had more varied expressions of emotions than those of the National General hospitals. In addition, it was found that the difference of recognition of the organizational commitment of the hospital workers according to the type of hospital work was higher in the organizational commitment of the employees of the National General Hospital than those of the Private General Hospitals.
The purpose of this study was to empirically investigate the relationship between hospital employeesʼ perceptions of organizational politics, organizational effectiveness such as job satisfaction, organizational commitment, and turnover intention. We also evaluated the moderating effect of organizational trust on the relationships between POPs and organizational effectiveness. By analyzing 726 employeesʼ data including physicians, nurses, medical technicians, and administrators from one private hospital, POPs was found to have had a highly negative relationship with job satisfaction and organizational commitment while a highly positive relationship with turnover intention. Furthermore, organizational trust moderated the relationship between POPs and job satisfaction, and also POPs and turnover intention, while no moderating effect appeared between POPs and organizational commitment. Within the organization, employees who are in a group with high organizational trust have low job satisfaction and high turnover intention when they have high POPs rather than a group with low organizational trust. Further the implications of these results and future directions of the study have been discussed.

The purpose of this study is to analyze job stress factors of hospital workers, which has an effect on their turnover intention. For identifying the influences on turnover intention, types of hospitals (university hospital, general hospital, private hospital) and types of workers(office workers, technical workers, and nursing staffs) were categorized. We went to the hospitals and carried out the survey under the cooperation with the concerned hospitals. The period of survey was from 23. Sep. 2013 to 30. Oct. 2013, and 293 worker participated in the survey. On the basis of the previous study, the measurement of job stress factors and turnover intention was set up as the survey method, and its reliability and validity were measured. The stress factors were subdivided into seven factors; occupational climate, organizational system, autonomy job control, uncertainty of getting a new job, job ability to perform, job demand, job ambiance. The value of job stress factors by the measuring instrument, Cronbach's Alpha, was 0.805 and the value of the subordination variable of turnover intention was 0.881. IBM SPSS Statistics 21 was used as the statistic analysis tool and the descriptive statistics about job stress factors. As a result, the turnover intention were analyzed depending on the types of hospitals, job groups, working years, and gender. Result shows that the job stress factors are differed according to the types of hospitals, and these job stress factors have influence on turnover intention. Therefore, it could be considered that, if the hospital managers find out the major job stress factors of their employees and resolve them in advance, the job stress of the hospital workers and their turnover intention can be reduced.

Objectives: This research was conducted to recognize dental health care employees' awareness of patient safety culture and to examine the association between awareness of patient safety culture and patient safety activities. Methods: The subject of this research includes the dental health care employees from 11 different dental hospitals in the nation, dental offices in the 6 different general hospitals in Seoul, and 4 different private dental offices in 2014. A self-reported questionnaire was completed by 485 dental health care employees from March 17 to April 3, 2014. Multiple regression models were used in the analysis. Results: First, the dental health employees' awareness of patient safety culture was 3.25 on average. The extent of patient safety activities was 2.75. The behavior of the supervisor/manager and the adequate explanation showed positive correlation with r=0.213 (p<0.001). The process of communication and the preventative inspection of the medical equipment showed negative correlation with r=-0.258 (p<0.001), and especially the awareness of patient safety culture and the infection control exercise showed the most significant correlation (r=0.293, p<0.001). Second, hospital environment factor of patient safety perceptions positively were related to most of patient safety management activities after controlling several covariates. Conclusions: The result of this research showed that most of the patient safety culture perceptions positively were correlated with patient safety activities. We also found that proper hospital environment, simple communication process, and positive perceptions for patient safety level were more likely to perform patient safety management activities after controlling several covariates. Improving the patient safety perceptions of dental hospital workers is an important consideration.

Design scheme drawings of the two major corporate hospitals - Asan Medical Center and Samsung Medical Center - are analysed in the aspect of floor area distributions and their proportions for various users and user-functions. Primary users of hospitals are categorized into three ; patients, employees and others. Then, patient spaces are subdivided into patient private, patient/medical, patient/support staff, patient/nursing, patient/guardian, patient common ; employee spaces into doctors, trainees, doctors common, nurses, support staffs, non-medical staffs, employee common ; others spaces into subcontractors, general publics, non-living, and internal circulation. The purpose of this research is to develop a user-focused insight into hospital spaces and a new method of hospital programming and design.
Objectives : The purpose of this study was to investigate regional commitment index(RGI) of hospital in Korea, and the relationship RGI and hospital characteristics, such as foundation, region, size. Therefore, we are to suggest fundamental information to make and evaluate healthcare resource policy in hospital- and government-level. Methods : The 'Patient Survey 2002(administered by Ministry of Health and Social Welfare(MOHW)' was analyzed. We selected the patient data of the hospitals above 100 beds. Then, we calculated the RGI, number of same cases divided by all cases in each hospital. By using SPSS/win ver 14.0, statistical analysis such as t-test, ANOVA, correlational and regression analysis was carried out. Results : The results are as follows. 1. Overall mean and standard deviation of RGI were revealed as 0.805${\pm}$0.225 in inpatients, and 0.871${\pm}$0.184 in outpatient. The median of inpatients' and outpatients' RGI were 0.890 and 0.933. The RGI of inpatients of private hospitals were revealed significantly higher than that of the public(public: 0.727, private: 0.822). However, outpatients' RGI was not revealed as significantly different. 2. The RGI of general specialty hospitals were significantly lower than others, therefore we could think that more inpatients and outpatients of general specialty hospitals flowed in from others province or metropolitan cities than other hospital types. 3. The RGI of hospitals holding above 400 beds were significantly lower than others in inpatients and outpatients. 5. The RGI of hospitals were significantly different among sixteen province and metropolitan cities. The RGI inpatients of Gwangju and Daejon metropolitan city were lowest sub-group(0.659, 0.664), and the RGI inpatients of Jeju was revealed as highest, 0.979. 6. Available beds, total doctors, and total employees were negatively correlated with RGI of inpatients and outpatients. 7. The significant influencing factors to RGI of inpatients and outpatients were appeared samely such as available beds, wide healthcare region, hospital size, and foundation type. Conclusions : It is considered that RGI of hospital represent competitive power in healthcare market. Also, the competitive advantage and quality of hospital clustered by characteristics could made out by RGI. Therefore, the results of this study would be useful to develop and evaluate hospital policy of individual hospital or local government.
