  • The feasibility of the application of terahertz electromagnetic waves in the diagnosis of prostate cancer was examined. Four samples of incomplete cancerous prostatic paraffin-embedded tissues were examined using terahertz spectral imaging (TPI) system and the results obtained by comparing the absorption coefficient and refractive index of prostate tumor, normal prostate tissue and smooth muscle from one of the paraffin tissue masses examined were reported. Three hundred and sixty cases of absorption coefficients from one of the paraffin tissues examined were used as raw data to classify these three tissues using the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) and Least Squares Support Vector Machine (LS-SVM). An excellent classification with an accuracy of 92.22% in the prediction set was achieved. Using the distribution information of THz reflection signal intensity from sample surface and absorption coefficient of the sample, an attempt was made to use the TPI system to identify the boundaries of the different tissues involved (prostate tumors, normal and smooth muscles). The location of three identified regions in the terahertz images (frequency domain slice absorption coefficient imaging, 1.2 THz) were compared with those obtained from the histopathologic examination. The tissue tumor region had a distinctively visible color and could well be distinguished from other tissue regions in terahertz images. Results indicate that a THz spectroscopy imaging system can be efficiently used in conjunction with the proposed advanced computer-based mathematical analysis method to identify tumor regions in the paraffin tissue mass of prostate cancer.

  • Restoration, prediction and noise analysis of geomagnetic data measured in the Korean Peninsula were performed. Restoration methods based on an optimized principal component analysis (PCA) and the geostatistical kriging approach were proposed, and its effectiveness was also interpreted. The PCA-based method seemed to be effective to restore the periodical signals and the geostatistical approach was stable to fill the gaps of measurements. To analyze the noise level for each observatory, the geomagnetic time-series was plotted by scattergram which reflects the spatial variation, using data observed during same period. The scattergram showed that the observation made at Cheongyang seemed to have better quality in spatial continuity and stability, and the restoration result was also better than that of Icheon site. For the restoration, both of the methods, geostatistical and optimizaed PCA, showed stable result when the missing of observation was within 20 points. However, in case of more missing observations than 20 points and prediction problem, the optimized PCA seemed to be closer to the real observation considering the frequency-domain characteristics. The prediction using the optimized PCA seems to be plausible for one day of period for interpretation.

  • To develop a new quality control method for the evaluation of Korean instant noodle soups, the chemical characteristics of roasted red pepper powder (RRP), mixed with lard were investigated while in storage at $65^{\circ}C$ for 6 weeks. The moisture contents of the RRP increased but the crude protein and crude lipid contents decreased up to 4 weeks of storage. The pH value decreased and the acid value increased steadily during storage. Both the American Spice Trade Association (ASTA) value that indicates redness of red pepper, and the CIE L, a, and b values decreased remarkably during storage. The fatty acids of the RRP oil were primarily oleic acid (33.4%), linoleic acid (30.8%), and palmitic acid (21.2%). The composition of fatty acids did not significantly change after 6 weeks of storage (p>0.05). Regarding the free fatty acid (FFA) composition of the RRP oil, palmitic acid (36.5%) was the principal component. The total amount of FFA and the amount of each individual FFA increased remarkably during storage. In addition, the ratio of free unsaturated fatty acids to free saturated fatty acids increased during storage.

  • PURPOSES : Daejeon is basically divided into an old downtown and a new downtown, and the recent relocation of the Chungcheongnam-do Provincial Government of Republic of Korea from the old downtown and the opening of governmental buildings in the new downtown as well have made this new downtown only densely populated with industrial and business facilities. Such changes in the downtowns have promoted the conditions of the new downtown while, consequently, dragging down the old downtown. Out of concern for those unbalanced developments of the two downtowns, Daejeon is now carrying out several city projects to revive the old downtown. In the light of that, as a part of the project to promote the old downtown, this study aims to conduct an evaluation on landscape of the culture and arts street in Daeheungdong which was built upon those ideas of a theme street project by Daejeon. METHODS : Based on the findings from the questionnaire not only on the components that would design the streetscape of the culture and arts street but also on the public satisfaction with the streetscape, the study defined how those changes in the components affect emotional factors of the pedestrians. In order to achieve the research goal, the study made changes in D/H ratio of the street structural components as well as the roadside trees. In terms of the questionnaire method, the study used the SD scale, and proceeded with its investigation through the frequency analysis, the principal component analysis (the factor analysis) and the structural equation model. RESULTS : According to the results from the factor analysis and the regression analysis, of those three factors, such as the openness, the comfortable sensation and the safety, the openness followed by the comfortable sensation and the safety was determined to have the most positive influence on the total satisfaction. The structural model analysis reported that the D/H and the structural components of the roadside trees and planting have a positive effect on the emotional image, and this emotional image also appeared to be positively related to the total satisfaction. CONCLUSIONS : This study looked into how the changes in the street structural components of the culture and arts street in Daeheungdong would affect the satisfaction with the streetscape, and finally confirmed that the D/H and the planting are what would have a positive effect on this satisfaction. What has been learned from this study will be the basic data to figure out how to promote and improve the culture and arts street in Daeheung-dong as this data will also help designing and developing of those specialized streets in other regions.

  • A quicker method was developed for foliar analysis in diagnosis of nitrogen in apple trees based on multivariate calibration procedure using partial least squares regression (PLSR) and principal component regression (PCR) to establish the relationship between reflectance spectra in the near infrared region and nitrogen content of fresh- and dry-leaf. Several spectral pre-processing methods such as smoothing, mean normalization, multiplicative scatter correction (MSC) and derivatives were used to improve the robustness and performance of the calibration models. Norris first derivative with a seven point segment and a gap of six points on MSC gave the best result of partial least squares-1 PLS-1) model for dry-leaf samples with root mean square error of prediction (RMSEP) equal to $0.699g\;kg^{-1}$, and that the Savitzky-Golay first derivate with a seven point convolution and a quadratic polynomial on MSC gave the best results of PLS-1 model for fresh-samples with RMSEP of $1.202g\;kg^{-1}$. The best PCR model was obtained with Savitzky-Golay first derivative using a seven point convolution and a quadratic polynomial on mean normalization for dry leaf samples with RMSEP of $0.553g\;kg^{-1}$, and obtained with the Savitzky-Golay first derivate using a seven point convolution and a quadratic polynomial for fresh samples with RMSEP of $1.047g\;kg^{-1}$. The results indicate that nitrogen can be determined by the near infrared reflectance (NIR) technology for fresh- and dry-leaf of apple.

  • The objective of this study was to investigate the most effective analysis methods for palatability grading of Hanwoo beef by comparing the results of discriminant analysis with sensory data. The sensory data were obtained from sensory testing by 1,300 consumers evaluated tenderness, juiciness, flavor-likeness and overall acceptability of Hanwoo beef samples prepared by boiling, roasting and grilling cooking methods. For the discriminant analysis with one factor, overall acceptability, the linear discriminant functions and the non-parametric discriminant function with the Gaussian kernel were estimated. The linear discriminant functions were simple and easy to understand while the non-parametric discriminant functions were not explicit and had the problem of selection of kernel function and bandwidth. With the three palatability factors such as tenderness, juiciness and flavor-likeness, the canonical discriminant analysis was used and the ability of classification was calculated with the accurate classification rate and the error rate. The canonical discriminant analysis did not need the specific distributional assumptions and only used the principal component and canonical correlation. Also, it contained the function of 3 factors (tenderness, juiciness and flavor-likeness) and accurate classification rate was similar with the other discriminant methods. Therefore, the canonical discriminant analysis was the most proper method to analyze the palatability grading of Hanwoo beef.

  • This study evaluates psychometric properties of the Revised Memory and Behavioral Problems Checklist(RMBPC) in Korean version. The sample includes 387 South Korean family caregivers who provide the majority of day to day tasks and emotional care for their older family members with physical and/or cognitive disabilities. The psychometric properties of the RMBPC are verified by item analysis, exploratory factor analysis(EFA) & confirmatory factor analysis(CFA). For cross-validity, the randomly divided two samples are used: one sample for EFA(n=193, 387/2) and the other sample for CFA(n=194, 387/2). The internal consistency of the K-RMBPC is excellent, and the convergent and criterion-related validity of the K-RMBPC with related variables is empirically confirmed. An EFA based on the Principal Component Analysis(PCA) method with varimax rotation explains 65.85% of variance accounted for by the three factors. A CFA also verifies that the model fit was acceptable. The shorter Korean version of the RMBPC is found reliable and valid. The translated checklist would be very useful for clinical and research settings by (a) focusing on observable, conceptually relevant, potentially modifiable behaviors and (b) using objective criteria within a self-administered framework, to enable clinicians and researchers to pinpoint areas of disturbance and target intervention goals for patients and caregivers in a cost-effective manner.

  • This study is designed to investigate what elders think about the meaning of aging. We have used Q-methods to identify meaning of aging from elders, and developed self-referenced surveys to analyze characteristics In this study, we used a non-structured method to select Q sampling. From 183 Q populations, we selected 36 Q sampling. A total of 32 persons sixty-years or older were randomly selected for P samples, When the Q-sorting was complete, we interviewed the participants at both end of the extremes(agree or disagree), and documented their responses. We used PC QUANL to process the data and used principal component analysis for Q factor analysis. There were five subjective types for the meaning of aging by elders. Of the 32 P-samples of elders, 11 were identified as Type 1, 7 as Type 2, 2 as Type 3, 8 as Type 4, and 4 as Type 5. Type 1 : 'Matured elders' Elders wished the well being of their children, thought older persons should maintain good health, worried about becoming senile, and dependent God believing in life after death. Type 2 : 'Assertive-Rights' Elders categorized as Assertive-Rights insisted on their rights to life as a person. Type 2 elders characterized themselves as people who should keep themselves healthy, become weak and lack sexual desires, act selfish like a child, need to be protected, and be financially independent. Type 3 : 'Passive-Dependents' Elders characterize themselves as those who pray for their children's well being, worry about the children even after their death. and becoming senile. Type 4 : 'Hopeless' The 'Hopeless' type of elders characterized aging as a time to pray for their children, insignificant beings, thoughts were selfish and child-like, poor, worried about going senile, regret their life overall, and preferred to die than to live as an old person. Type 5 : 'Attached-Present' The 'Attached-Present' type of elders thought elderly characterized themselves as acting selfish and child-like, wiser, anxious, regret their life, stand aloof of greed and worldly things, being a model for the society, and deserving to be treated with filial respect. Thus far, Korean elders seemed to have a positive and negative meaning of aging due to the current changes in the society, value system, and family structures. The above five subjective meanings of aging confirm that we need to approach and nurse the elderly differently. Years of aging are a part of and a natural process of life with various physical, psychological, and sociological changes. Nurses need to assist elderly to find the positive meaning of their life by providing appropriate physical, psychological, and social support at an earlier stage in nursing. Based on this study, we could derive the following two implication from the perspectives of science of nursing to care for elders. 1) Based on the studies investigating the type of meaning of aging, we could develop tools to assist in nursing intervention programs for elderly. 2) Based on research on the meaning of aging for different developmental stages of life, we could develop a model for roles for different family members in nursing and caring for the elders.

  • Cathodic protection is recognized as the most cost-effective and technically appropriate corrosion prevention method for the submerged zone of offshore structures, ships, and deep-sea facilities. When cathodic protection is applied, the cathodic currents cause dissolved oxygen reduction, generating hydroxyl ions near the polarized surface that increase the interfacial pH and result in enhanced carbonate ion concentration and precipitation of an inorganic layer whose principal component is calcium carbonate. Depending on the potential, magnesium hydroxide can also precipitate. This mixed deposit is generally called "calcareous deposit." This layer functions as a barrier against the corrosive environment, leading to a decrease in current demand. Hence, the importance of calcareous deposits for the effective, efficient operation of marine cathodic protection systems is recognized by engineers and scientists concerned with cathodic protection in submerged marine environments. Calcareous deposit formation on a marine structure depends on the potential, current, pH, temperature, pressure, sea-water chemistry, flow, and time; deposit quality is significantly influenced by these factors. This study determines how calcareous deposits form in sea water, and assesses the interrelationship of formation conditions (such as the sea water temperature and surface condition of steel), deposited structure, and properties and the effectiveness of the cathodic protection.

  • This study was performed to grasp the relation between the effect and the satisfaction of a mouth gymnastics program on the promotion of oral function of old persons. The experimental group of 47 old persons conducted a mouth gymnastics exercise two times every week for 12 weeks, while the control group of 39 old persons carrying out physical examinations. The mean salivary secretion in the experimental group was 0.075 ml and more than 0.046 ml in the control group. Maximum mouth opening in the experimental group, 4.12 cm, was higher than 3.92 cm in the control. Oral diadochokinesis in experimental and control group was 1.69 times per second and 1.65, respectively. The result of principal component analysis by Quartimax method with Kaiser normalization showed that program prevalence prediction of mouth-gymnastics exercise was high, and it is estimated that this exercise program would be more popular for health promotion of old persons. From the correlation analysis, mouth gymnastics exercise made salivary flow increase(r=.592), this exercise should be recommended actively for improving mouth health of old persons. Also more modification is required for old persons with difficulty in mouth gymnastics exercise. Some movements of the mouth gymnastics exercise need be modified, and then the exercise should be publicized as one of the ways to improve holistic health of the aged.
