The Effects of BLS Training on CPR Attitudes of Primary School Students (기본 심폐소생술 교육이 초등학생의 심폐소생술 태도에 미치는 효과)

  • Purpose: In order to elucidate the effects of BLS (Basic Life Support) education for primary students, we analyzed data collected using a questionnaire on attitude toward CPR. Methods: Students were divided into two groups, the experimental group with BLS education and the control group without BLS education. Data was collected after BLS education for the experimental group. While they were learning BLS, the control group completed the questionnaire. Results: There were significant statistical differences in the total score of students' attitudes. The students in the experimental group indicated a more positive attitude toward CPR than the others. Conclusion: This study showed that BLS education had a positive influence on elementary students' attitudes toward CPR. We expect that the result will contribute to the spread of CPR and the reduction of mortality.

Studies on Food Safety Knowledge of College Students according to Mass-Media Impact (대중매체 영향에 따른 일부 대학생의 식품안전 지식 조사)

  • This study was conducted to assess food safety knowledge of college students according to mass-media reports. To accomplish this, a survey was conducted to investigate the reliability, of primary mass-media sources on Bovine Spongiform Encephalopathy(BSE) as well as the preferences of college students. The most common sources of media consumed by male and female students were terrestrial television(TV)(60%), the internet(21%), and newspapers(11%) and terrestrial TV(60%), newspapers (18%), and the internet(17%), respectively. The preferences for media of major and non-major students were terrestrial TV(64%), newspapers(17%), and the internet(14%) and terrestrial TV(51%), the internet(22%), and newspapers(19%), respectively. The reliability of media as viewed by male students were as follows: terrestrial TV(53%) and the internet(40%), whereas for female students, these values were terrestrial TV(55%) and the internet(37%). The reliability of media as viewed by major and non-major students was as follows: terrestrial TV(67%) and the internet(28%), and terrestrial TV(44%) and the internet(44%), respectively. In the case of male students, the primary sources for information regarding BSE were terrestrial TV(54%) and the internet(38%), whereas for female students, the primary sources were terrestrial TV(57%) and internet (37%). In the case of major students, the primary sources for information regarding BSE were terrestrial TV(52%) and the Internet(40%), and for non-major students, the internet(47%) and terrestrial TV(39%). Both male and female students were found to have less knowledge regarding prions, SRM(Specified Risk Materials), MM(methionine-methionine) type genes, and cow above 30 months associated with BSE compared to the other factors associated with this disease. The BSE-related knowledge held by major and non-major students was revealed unknown more than the majority of responses. Based on these results, greater effort should be made to provide meaningful information to improve the food-safety knowledge of college students according to mass-media.

A Study on Application of Teaching-Learning Program based on Constructivist Views for Mathematically gifted Students in Primary School (초등 영재 교육에서의 구성주의 교수.학습 모형 적용 연구 - 알고리즘 문제를 중심으로 -)

  • The purpose of this paper is to analyze teaching-learning program which can be applied to mathematically gifted students in primary school, Our program is based on constructivist views on teaching and learning of mathematics. Mainly, we study the algorithmic thinking of mathematically gifted students in primary school in connection with the network problems; Eulerian graph problem, the minimum connector problem, and the shortest path problem, The above 3-subjects are not familiar with primary school mathematics, so that we adapt teaching-learning model based on the social constructivism. To achieve the purpose of this study, seventeen students in primary school participated in the study, and video type(observation) and student's mathematical note were used for collecting data while the students studied. The results of our study were summarized as follows: First, network problems based on teaching-learning model of constructivist views help students learn the algorithmic thinking. Second, the teaching-learning model based on constructivist views gives an opportunity of various mathematical thinking experience. Finally, the teaching-learning model based on constructivist views needs more the ability of teacher's research and the time of teaching for students than an ordinary teaching-learning model.

Effect of Menstrugole on primary dysmenorrhea: a randomized clinical trial

  • Objective Primary dysmenorrhea occurs in more than 50% of women of reproductive age. This survey evaluated the effects of Menstrugole on the alleviation of primary dysmenorrhea. Methods This study was performed in western Iran between August 15 and December 15, 2017, in female students with primary dysmenorrhea. The students were randomly divided into 2 groups and received placebo or a Menstrugole capsule for 3 days in each of 2 menstrual cycles. The visual analog scale was used to assess pain severity. The ${\chi}^2$-test, one-way analysis of variance, and the paired t-test were used for statistical evaluation. Results We compared the severity of pain between the 2 groups. There was a significant change in the mean pain score during the first (P<0.001) and second months (P<0.001) after the use of Menstrugole, compared with that in the placebo group. Conclusion Menstrugole decreased pain severity in female students, and can be considered by health care providers for treatment of primary dysmenorrhea.

Emerging Role of Primary Leader in Group Interaction with Mechanics Problems During Upper-level Mechanics Course

  • According to social constructivism, group interaction is very important when students construct their knowledge. Many researchers have developed methods of teaching on the basis of group interaction because they recognized the importance of group interaction. There are a large variety of issues related to group interaction including group size, the gender and ability composition of groups, seating arrangements, textbook use, gestures, and role assignments. However, research on group interaction in science learning is still insufficient. In this study, we focused upon the emerging role of the primary leader. We investigated the primary leader's diverse role when students are solving mechanics problems. The participants were one group composed of three students in an upper-level mechanics class. To analyze these students' group interactions, their verbal interactions during meetings were videotaped and audiotaped during one-semester period. We also conducted interviews with the three students and analyzed their reports. As a result, we could find a special student who had the role of primary leader. We could also find the leader's three different leadership roles in different problem situations by inductively; explainer, facilitator and evaluator. Group interaction had different aspect according to the different role of leaders. The group interactions were the most active when the leader played the role of facilitator.

A Review of the Literature on Primary Students' Science-Related Attitudes (초등학생들의 과학 관련 태도에 대한 문헌 연구)

  • This study aimed to investigate primary students' science-related attitudes through the literature review. Ninety-four papers published in domestic science education journals, since 1990, were collected and were followed by content analysis. In this study, science-related attitude was conceptualized as attitude toward science, scientist, science-related occupations, and school science, which is composed of cognitive, affective and behavioral domains. Based on the conceptualization, the instruments used for measuring students' attitudes were analyzed. The analysis of definition of science-related attitude in the articles showed different foci on cognitive, affective and behavioral domains. To suggest the effective instruction for enhancing students' science-related attitudes, this study identified students' attitude with gender, grade, residence and achievement level. The result showed that male, urban, higher-grade and better performed students had more positive attitude than female, rural, lower-grade and less performed students. As for the factors in science-related attitude, I categorized the factors into personal, environmental and pedagogical aspects, and found that psychological elements in all domains were most influential to students' change of science-related attitudes. It is interesting to note that students showed dichotomous views about experiment and that task-oriented instruction failed to enhance students' attitude. Based on the research findings, this study suggests effective instruction for improving students' attitudes and future research for science education.

Studies on the Food Safety-Related Informations of College Students (대학생의 식품 안전 관련 정보에 관한 연구)

In addition, the important determining factors for the food purchase of male and female students both were the orders of taste, hygiene, price. The preferences for meats and the beef-alternative meats of male and female students were the orders of pork, chicken. Based on these results, greater efforts should be made to provide meaningful information regarding the safe production and distribution of meats.

An applied English drama in primary English education (초등영어교육에서의 영어연극 활용법)

  • This study aims to illustrate the value of teaching English drama in the course of teaching primary English and suggests a model for primary English drama in an English camp for Children. Drama is the world of assumption where language is used just like in real life. It has a positive effect on foreign language learning by encouraging the operation of certain psychological factors which facilitate oral communication. Dramatic techniques such as storytelling, role play, chant, song and games can be used in the EFL classroom to help bring about such results. Meanwhile, making a primary English drama in an English camp for Children would be practical mode to attain the essential purpose of EFL teaching particularly to get over the drawbacks of Korean students' communicative competence under the school's inflexible EFL education curriculum. In this paper, I will present the effectiveness of English drama and the skills for using it with ESL students and suggest some notes that can be used to reinforce the goals set out from the position of the teacher, student and teaching material. It is confirmed that the trained leader, students' affirmative attitude and systematic teaching materials are needed to maximize the effects of drama activities. In addition to that, there will be showed a model of instruction targeted to the primary students learning English in an English camp for Children.

Effects of Forest Experience Activity on the Attitude toward Forest and Personality of Primary School Students

  • The present study aimed to identify the importance of forest experience activity by examining what effects forest experience activity has on primary school students. The study population consisted of 108 students enrolled as fourth graders in primary schools in Chuncheon as of November 2017. The study measured the changes in their attitude toward forest and personality from before and after forest experience activity. The results indicated that the primary school students who participated in forest experience activity showed statistically significant increase in attitude toward forest and personality. In other words, the study identified the positive effects of forest experience activity on recognizing the importance of nature and personality building. The present study aimed to test the importance and effects of forest experience through forest experience activity outside of the classroom, as well as to present the validity of promoting forest experience activity.

The Effect of Science Museum Educational Program on Primary School Students' Science Learning Motivation (과학관 교육 프로그램이 초등학생들의 과학 학습 동기에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was to examine science learning motivation of primary students participating in science museum educational programs. The subject was 36 primary students in the programs in a science museum during a month. The questionnaire for this study consisted of items developed by us and some items from Motivated Strategies for Learning Questionnaire developed by Pintrich et al.(2001). The results included primary students' motivation of joining the programs in a science museum, their perceptions about the programs, and the effects of the programs on their science learning motivation. It seemed that the students had the opportunities of doing science activities in the museum on the recommendation of their family or teachers, especially their parents. And they were motivated to participate the programs with interests of science and they were interested in the activities in the programs. The statistics showed that the program have an positive effects on the students' self efficacies and values on science tasks. Based on this results, discussion and implications were presented.
