In order to simulate a free surface flow in a trench channel, a three-dimensional incompressible unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes (RANS) equations are closed with the ${\kappa}-{\epsilon}$ model. The artificial compressibility (AC) method is used. Because the pressure fields can be coupled directly with the velocity fields, the incompressible Navier-Stokes (INS) equations can be solved for the unknown variables such as velocity components and pressure. The governing equations are discretized in a conservation form using a second order accurate finite volume method on non-staggered grids. In order to prevent the oscillatory behavior of computed solutions known as odd-even decoupling, an artificial dissipation using the flux-difference splitting upwind scheme is applied. To enhance the efficiency and robustness of the numerical algorithm, the implicit method of the Beam and Warming method is employed. The treatment of the free surface, so-called interface-tracking method, is proposed using the free surface evolution equation and the kinematic free surface boundary conditions at the free surface instead of the dynamic free surface boundary condition. AC method in this paper can be applied only to the hydrodynamic pressure using the decomposition into hydrostatic pressure and hydrodynamic pressure components. In this study, the boundary-fitted grids are used and advanced each time the free surface moved. The accuracy of our RANS solver is compared with the laboratory experimental and numerical data for a fully turbulent shallow-water trench flow. The algorithm yields practically identical velocity profiles that are in good overall agreement with the laboratory experimental measurement for the turbulent flow.

The effects of carburizing pressure and gas ratio on vacuum carburizing properties (uniformity and surface characteristics) have been studied through the analyses of carbon concentration, hardness, surface color, surface roughness and type of carbon bonding. AISI 4115 steel specimens were carburized with various pressures (1, 5, and 10 Torr) at different locations (P1, P2, P3, P4, P5, and P6) inside a furnace held at 950 ℃. Since the carburizing pressure represents the density of the carburizing gas, it plays an important role in improving the carburizing uniformity according to locations in the furnace. As the carburizing pressure increased, the carburizing uniformity according to the sample location was improved, but the surface of the carburized specimen was discolored due to the residual acetylene gas, which does not contribute to the carburizing reaction. Therefore, the carburizing uniformity and surface discoloration have been improved by injecting acetylene gas (carburizing gas) and nitrogen gas (non-reactive gas) in a specific ratio.
The goals of the paper are to understand the impact damage behavior and identify the effect of surface protective materials on impact resistance in filament wound composite pressure vessels. For these, a series of low velocity impact tests was performed on specimens cutting from the full scale pressure vessel by the instrumented impact testing machine. The specimens are classified into two types, which are with and without surface protective material. The visualization for impact damage by two different impactors is made by metallurgical microscope. Based on the impact force history and damage, the impact resistance parameters were employed, rod its validity in identifying the damage resistance of filament wound composite pressure vessel was reviewed. As the results, the impact resistance of the filament wound composites and its dependency on the surface protective material were evaluated quantitatively

Sloshing phenomenon is a complicated free surface flow problem that increases the dynamic pressure on the sidewalls and the bottom of the storage tanks. When the storage tanks are partially filled, it is essential to be able to evaluate the fluid dynamic loads on the tank's perimeter. In this paper, a numerical code was developed to determine the pressure distribution on the rectangular and trapezoidal storage tanks' perimeters due to liquid sloshing phenomenon. Assuming the fluid to be inviscid, the Laplace equation and the nonlinear free surface boundary conditions were solved using coupled boundary element - finite element method. The code performance for sloshing modeling was validated using Nakayama and Washizu's results. Finally, this code was used for partially filled rectangular and trapezoidal storage tanks and free surface displacement, pressure distribution and horizontal and vertical forces exerted on the tanks' perimeters due to liquid sloshing phenomenon were estimated and discussed.

Effect of calendering on structural and surface properties of sheets made of various pulp was investigated. BKP, BCTMP and KOCC were used as raw materials for handsheets and sheets were calendered at the different calendering temperature and pressure conditions. Caliper, air permeability, and PPS roughness were reduced by calendering, but their effects were a little different depending on pulp type and calendering condition. Increase of density with increase of calendering Pressure was remarkable on sheet made of BCTMP or KOCC, and the effect of temperature was more significant than pressure. PPS roughness of sheet made of BCTMP or KOCC was reduced by calendering, but BKP sheet showed little reduction of roughness at higher calendering pressure. The compressibility of sheet increased logarithmetically with calendering pressure and surface compressibility of KOCC sheet was relatively higher than other pulps.

The establishment of the technology for evaluating friction resistance and pipe pressure and the relation of the fluid characteristics and pumpability of concrete is essential for the evaluation of concrete pumping performance for high speed construction of super-tall building. So, this study focuses on quantitative evaluation of concrete fluid characteristics and surface friction resistance under the change of concrete mix proportion and pumping condition. In this study, we measured the rheology of concrete and pipe pressure and surface friction characteristics when pumping. And, relations between the rheology characteristics of concrete and pumping performance was investigated by experiment. As the result of the experiment, high regression between the surface friction and pressure gradient was confirmed. And, prediction model to evaluate the friction resistance coefficient and pipe pressure reduction coefficient was suggested.

This paper reports the fabrication and characterization of surface micromachined poly 3C-SiC capacitive pressure sensors on silicon wafer operable in touch mode and normal mode for high temperature applications. FEM(finite elements method) simulation has been performed to verify the analytical mode. The sensing capacitor of the capacitive pressure sensor is composed of the upper metal and the poly 3C-SiC layer. Measurements have been performed in a temperature range from $25^{\circ}C$ to $500^{\circ}C$. Fabrication process of designed poly 3C-SiC touch mode capacitive pressure sensor was optimized and would be applicable to capacitive pressure sensors that are required high precision and sensitivity at high pressure and temperature.
The pressure in a water-entry induced cavity, is analyzed up to the closed cavity (bubble). Water-entry is a highly transient phenomenon, and the evolution of the water-entry cavity must be explained by considering the entry speed, shape of the solid body, atmosphere pressure, and cavity pressure as the primary variables. This work is an extension of the cavity dynamics model recently reported by Lee (l997a). To extend the model for a wide range of entry speeds the cavity pressure is calculated from a one-dimensional quasi-steady flow model. The estimation of the cavity pressure allows us to explain the experimentally observed surface closure phenomena at low entry speeds. Predictions for the time of surface closure are compared with the published experimental data.

Tunnel boring machines combined with the earth pressure balanced shield method (EPB shield TBMs) have been adopted in urban areas as they allow excavation of tunnels with limited ground deformation through continuous and repetitive excavation and support. Nevertheless, the expansion of TBM construction requires much more minor and exquisitely controlled surface settlement to prevent economic loss. Several parametric studies controlling the tunnel's geometry, ground properties, and TBM operational factors assuming ordinary conditions for EPB shield TBM excavation have been conducted, but the impact of excessive excavation on the induced settlement has not been adequately studied. This study conducted a numerical evaluation of surface settlement induced by the ground loss from face imbalance, excessive excavation, and tail void grouting. The numerical model was constructed using FLAC3D and validated by comparing its result with the field data from literature. Then, parametric studies were conducted by controlling the ground stiffness, face pressure, tail void grouting pressure, and additional volume of muck discharge. As a result, the contribution of these operational factors to the surface settlement appeared differently depending on the ground stiffness. Except for the ground stiffness as the dominant factor, the order of variation of surface settlement was investigated, and the volume of additional muck discharge was found to be the largest, followed by the face pressure and tail void grouting pressure. The results from this study are expected to contribute to the development of settlement prediction models and understanding the surface settlement behavior induced by TBM excavation.
