Mathematics preservice teachers' Mathematical Content Knowledge ("MCK") includes not only knowledge for mathematics, but also academic knowledge for school mathematics and mathematical process knowledge. We can consider the items in PISA 2012 as suitable tools to assess process knowledge as well as mathematical content knowledge because these items are developed by competent international educational experts. Therefore, the responses to items with the low percentage of correct answers in conjunction with the mathematical contents were analyzed with focus on FMC. The results showed the reasoning competency in responses using the conditions of the problem and of understanding the conditions after reading the complex problems within the context (i.e. the reasoning and argumentation competency, and communication competency) requires improvements. Furthermore the results indicated the errors due to a lack of ability of devising strategies for problem solving. Based on the foregoing results, the implications towards the directions of the education for the preservice mathematics teachers have been derived.
This study investigated elementary preservice teachers' conceptions of a generating line, an ambiguous concept in school mathematics. The preservice teachers' conceptions of a generating line can be classified into four types: (a) only cones have generating lines, (b) only cones and cylinders have generating lines, (c) solids of revolution have generating lines, (d) straight lines on the lateral surface are generating lines. 22.1% of all preservice teachers believed that only cones have generating lines, and most of them followed the definition of a generating line presented in elementary mathematics textbooks. The conception that only cones and cylinders have generating lines was the least investigated. However, since there were instances where generating lines were defined with the use of a director curve, it became important to explore topics more thoroughly, such as generating lines of a truncated cone. 27.9% of all preservice teachers believed that solids of revolution have generating lines. This conception was marked by differing opinions on whether spheres also have generating lines. The conception that straight lines on the lateral surface are generating lines was the most frequently investigated. This conception differs from the traditional view in school mathematics because it suggests using a director curve to define generating lines. Based on these analysis results, the researcher developed specific teaching methods that considered both subject matter knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge for preservice teachers. In addition, the researcher proposed a consensus definition of a generating line in mathematics education.

The data for the present paper was a part of a large research project conducted to assess preservice teachers' knowledge related to fractions and place value at a southwestern public university in 2007. The study utilized convenience sampling, consisting of 150 elementary preservice teachers who were enrolled in a mathematics methods course before their student teaching. The results demonstrated preservice teachers' knowledge of teaching comparison, addition, subtraction, and multiplication of fractions was insufficient even though these should be basic knowledge. Teacher preparation programs should emphasize profound knowledge for teaching fractions using representations.
The purpose of this study was to investigate the preservice elementary teachers' knowledge of division through open-ended problems focused on the following perspectives in understanding division : connectedness between procedural and conceptual knowledge as well as the knowledge of units. Results indicates that the preservice elementary teachers showed low level of understanding of division such as the making word problem including division of fractions and the identification of the units in division operation.
A case study was conducted to investigate the understandings of the subject matter knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge held by 63 elementary preservice teachers in dealing with the division by a fraction. The study results showed that, in terms of the subject matter knowledge, the preservice teachers did not have a conceptual understanding of the division by a fraction and, in terms of the pedagogical content knowledge, they depended heavily on algorithms without a conceptual understanding of the meaning of the division by a fraction.
There is no doubt about the importance of teacher knowledge for good teaching. Many researches attempted to conceptualize elements and features of teacher knowledge for teaching in a quantitative way. Unlike existing researches, this article suggests an interpretation of preservice teacher knowledge in the field of geometry using the Shulman - Fischbein framework in a qualitative way. Seven female preservice teachers voluntarily participated in this research and they performed a series of written tasks that asked their subject matter knowledge (SMK) and pedagogical content knowledge (PCK). Their responses were analyzed according to mathematical algorithmic -, formal -, and intuitive - SMK and PCK. The interpretation revealed that preservice teachers had overally strong SMK, their deeply rooted SMK did not change, their SMK affected their PCK, they had appropriate PCK with regard to knowledge of student, and they tended to less focus on mathematical intuitive - PCK when they considered instructional strategies. The understanding of preservice teachers' knowledge throughout the analysis using Shulman-Fischbein framework will be able to help design teacher preparation programs.
This research aims to conduct the teaching experiment based on the constructivism to elementary preservice teachers and report on how they construct and develop the mathematical knowledge on ratio concept. Furthermore, this research aims to examine the significances and difficulties of "constructivist teaching experiment" which are conceived by elementary preservice teachers. As the results of this research, I identified the possibilities and limits of mathematical knowledge construction by elementary preservice teachers in the "constructivist teaching experiment". And the elementary preservice teachers pointed out the significances of "constructivist teaching experiment" such as the experience of prior thinking on the concept to be learned, the deep understanding on the concept, the active participation to the lesson, and the experience of learning process of elementary students. Also they pointed out the difficulties of "constructivist teaching experiment" such as the consumption of much time to carry out the constructivist teaching, the absence of direct feedbacks by teacher, and the adaption on the constructivist lesson.
This study systematically examined the influence of preservice teachers' self-efficacy and AI anxiety, on the intention to use AI programs 'knock-knock! mathematics expedition' in mathematics lessons based on a technology acceptance model. The research model was established with variables including self-efficacy, AI anxiety, perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, and intention of use from 254 pre-service teachers. The structural relationships and direct and indirect effects between these variables were examined through structural equation modeling. The results indicated that self-efficacy significantly affected perceived ease of use, perceived usefulness, and intention to use. In contrast, AI anxiety did not significantly influence perceived ease of use and perceived usefulness. Perceived ease of use significantly affected perceived usefulness and intention to use and perceived usefulness significantly affected intention to use. The findings offer insights and strategies for encouraging the use of 'knock-knock! mathematics expedition' by preservice teachers in mathematics lessons.
Recently, as the educational paradigm shifts from teacher-centered to learner-centered, the active construction of knowledge of learners is becoming more important. Accordingly, classes using mathematical modeling are receiving attention. However, existing research is focused on teachers or middle and high school students, so it is difficult to apply the contents and results of the research to preservice teachers. Therefore, in this study, the experience of mathematical modeling was examined for elementary school preservice teachers. And we looked at how positive experiences of mathematical modeling change their perceptions. As a result of the study, elementary school preservice teachers had very little experience in mathematical modeling during their school days. In addition, it was found that the perceptions changed more positively than when a theoretical class on mathematical modeling was conducted, rather than when the experience of mathematical modeling was actually shared. Based on the results of this study, implications were suggested in the course of training preservice teachers.
This study examined the relationship between preservice teachers' mathematical understanding and problem posing in fractions multiplication and division. To this purpose, 41 preservice teachers performed visual representation and problem posing tasks for fraction multiplication and division, measured their mathematical understanding and problem posing ability, and examined the relationship between mathematical understanding and problem posing ability using cross-tabulation analysis. As a result, most of the preservice teachers showed conceptual understanding of fraction multiplication and division, and five types of difficulties appeared. In problem posing, most of the preservice teachers failed to pose a math problem that could be solved, and four types of difficulties appeared. As a result of cross-tabulation analysis, the degree of mathematical understanding was related to the ability to pose problems. Based on these results, implications for preservice teachers' mathematical understanding and problem posing were suggested.
