  • In this study, we investigated the preservice elementary school teachers' self-images of science teaching and the factors influencing their formation by using Draw-A-Science-Teacher-Test Checklist (DASTT-C). One-hundred eighty-two sophomores and 183 seniors were selected from the departments of science and non-science education in three national universities of education. DASTT-C was administered to the sophomores at the beginning of the Spring Semester, and to the seniors at the beginning of the Fall Semester. Analyses of the results revealed that the self-images of science teaching of the seniors were more student-centered than those of the sophomores in the department of science education. However, there was no significant difference between the DASTT-C scores of the sophomores and the seniors in the department of non-science education. Many sophomores answered that the main factors affecting their self-images of science teaching were teaching-learning experiences in elementary, middle and high schools. However, many seniors cited the content and teaching methods in science education courses as well as direct or indirect teaching-learning experiences in teaching practices regardless of the departments. Educational implications of these findings are discussed.

  • Teachers' conception about the nature of science is considered to be an important factor to improve the students' conceptions of that. It is assumed that teachers' conception of the nature of science may be influenced by their views of learning. The first purpose of this study was to investigate the exploratory relationships between teachers' conceptions about the nature of science and their views of learning. The second one was to compare the their conceptions and views of learning before and after science education lectures during 1 semester. We administered the questionnaires for the nature of science and for constructivist's learning, respectively, consisted of 5 dimensions (relativism-positivism; inductivism- deductivism; decontextualism-contextualism; content-process; instrumentalism-realism) and of 6 aspects (student; learning; instruction; teacher; curriculum; evaluations) were administered to 57 pre-service elementary teachers (female=44; male=13) before and after lectures. In pre-test it was revealed that respondents had not the consistent conceptions about the nature of science. The conception of relativism was more dominant than those of positivism, deductivism than inductivism, decontextualism than contextualism, process than content and instrumentalism than realism. They had more constructivist views in the respect of process of learning than in other respects, that is, students, instruction, teacher, curriculum and evaluation. But no significant correlations between the dimensions of the nature of science and the aspects of the views of learning suggest that constructivst views of learning was not deeply related with their conceptions of the nature of science. In post-test we had similar results with those of the pre-test, but the process-content dimensions of the nature of science was correlated with the constuctivist views of learning. Therefore we concluded that elementary pre-service teachers had the constructivist views of learning which was isolated with their conceptions of the nature of science although they had science educations course. We need to develop the course to make the conceptions of the nature of science relate view of learning.

  • Telepresence robot-assisted learning can provide opportunities of education for students who are in vulnerable physical, intellectual, cultural or environmental conditions. It is to be applied in international virtual education for global citizenship education. To date, the study of acceptance model has been conducted only for preservice teachers, and post-intention for use is not considered. This paper identified whether there are significant differences by gender or years of experience from elementary school teachers on it and the basic factors that affect the acceptance intentions for it. Factors related to intention to use for a telepresence robot were investigated, and a questionnaire about post-intention for use was made after participants operated. The results showed that elementary school teachers did not have a significant difference in each factor by gender. The experienced teachers showed no difficulty in using it. It was shown that PU, ATT, PENJ, SI and Ttrust were all extremely significant factors to affect acceptance intentions. It will be possible to establish educational information policies based on the acceptance intentions of elementary school teachers on telepresence robot-assisted learning.

  • The purpose of this study is to explore the possibility of enhancing teachers' pedagogical design capacity using ChatGPT. For this purpose, a survey was conducted to investigate preservice teachers' perceptions of ChatGPT, and lesson plans created using ChatGPT were analyzed from the perspectives of design elements, conversations with ChatGPT, and information transforming. The results showed that pre-service teachers have a rather passive attitude toward the use of ChatGPT, and that teacher moderation and ChatGPT characteristics affect pre-service teachers' perceptions of the use of ChatGPT. In addition, pre-service teachers mainly used ChatGPT for motivational activities and play activities, and there were significant differences in the level of utilization of ChatGPT among individuals, i.e., how they interacted with ChatGPT and how they transformed information. Based on these findings, we explored the possibility of using ChatGPT for teacher professional development and teacher education.

  • The purpose of this study was to make a suggestion for the direction of writing textbook by comparing and analyzing the contents about 'Adiabatic Change' in earth science I textbooks. For this study, six textbooks were chosen among the eight government-authorized earth science I textbooks that were in general use in schools. Based on the researcher's preview of the six chosen textbooks, three categories were established as a criteria for analysis of the contents of 'adiabatic change': definitions, illustrations, and experiments. Thirty five preservice secondary teachers participated in analyzing the six textbooks based on the above three categories. Each of the six books was given an alphabet from A to F. The analysis results were as follows: Textbook A was turned out as the best textbook in the category of definition, textbook C as the best in the category of illustration, and textbook B as the best in the category of experiment about the concept of 'adiabatic change'. However, each of the six earth science textbooks showed an insufficient part in one way or the other. The results imply that the inaccurate and inappropriate information would not only make the students difficult to understand the adiabatic change but also lead them to some level of misconceptions. Therefore, there need to reconstruct the contents of textbooks to be more systematic, accurate, and complete.

  • Using six preservice teachers as subjects, this was purpose to research about concepts in understanding carbon cycle, which of concepts were related to the conception of the system, and finally whether or not the systems thinking was sufficiently around carbon cycle. To achieve this study purpose , an instrument related to carbon cycle was developed and administered to the six teachers. The study found that a total of 42 conceptions within the system were concepts related to carbon cycle. The consisted of 15 conceptions in atmosphere, 11 in atmosphere 9 in hydrosphere, and 7 in lithosphere. In aspect of applying the system thinking, 4 subjects who couldn't compose the feedback loop in their causal map failed to apply this type of thinking. The other two who applied systems thinking had 2 and 1 feedback loop each, in their causal maps. But, one of the feedback loop from the subject who made two was based on unscientific reasoning. As a result, the subjects had lower understanding of concepts related to carbon cycle in lithosphere than in atmosphere, atmosphere, and hydrosphere. Futhermore, the subjects' application of the earth systems thinking on carbon was at a low standard.

  • In this study, we investigated the characteristics of the individual processes of pre-service chemistry teachers in making written test items. For this, we analyzed the think-aloud processes of eight pre-service chemistry teachers while making six written test items about gas laws and their in-depth interview scripts. The characteristics of the processes were found to be divided into six categories; the lack of systemicity in planning stage for making written test items, the lack of awareness and consideration for the interrelationship between instruction and assessment, the diverse criteria in determining test item types, the difficulties in judging behavioral domains and difficulties of items in the table of specification, the limitation in using teacher's guides and misunderstanding of teacher's guides, and the limitation in point and/or content of review and differences depending on the time of review. These can provide some significant guidelines and implications in finding ways to improve pre-service chemistry teachers' ability to make written test items.
