A large eddy simulation(LES) is performed for turbulent flow around a bluff body inside a sudden expansion cylinder chamber, a configuration which resembles a premixed gas turbine combustor. To promote turbulent mixing and to accommodate flame stability, a flame holder is installed inside the combustion chamber. The Smagorinsky model is employed and the calculated Reynolds number is 5,000 based on the bulk velocity and the diameter of the inlet pipe. The simulation code is constructed by using a general coordinate system based on the physical contravariant velocity components. The predicted turbulent statistics are evaluated by comparing them with the laser-doppler velocimetry (LDV) measurement data. The agreement of LES with the experimental data is shown to be satisfactory. Emphasis is placed on the time-dependent evolutions of turbulent vortical structure behind the flame holder. The numerical flow visualizations depict the behavior of large-scale vortices. The turbulent mixing process behind the flame holder is analyzed by visualizing the sectional views of vortical structure.

The design of the fuel injector is one of the important operating factors that determine the extent of mixing of air and fuel in an MEMS gas turbine engine. In this study, we consider a system with three inlet ports with each port having multiple injectors. We perform a parametric study by varying the arrangement of fuel injectors and difference of ratio of fuel supply. The results are presented in terms of the premixed flow distribution and equivalence ratio.
Experimental study was conducted to investigate the effect of EGR(exhaust gas recirculation) on engine noise using single cylinder combustion ignition engine. Under constant engine rotary speed of 1200 RPM, 8 mg fuel quantity was injected with 15, 18 and 21% of oxygen ratio and 1400 bar of injection pressure. Using the in-cylinder pressure data acquired by a piezoelectric transducer, the engine performance parameters were calculated. Radiated engine noise measured for 10 seconds was analyzed using spectral characteristics and sound quality metrics such as loudness, sharpness, roughness. From the obtained engine performance parameters and sound quality metrics, effect of oxygen ratio of the premixed air, start of injection timing on frequency characteristic and sound quality metrics were analyzed. Correlation analysis was conducted between MPRR(maximum pressure rise rate), RI(ringing intensity) and sound quality metrics. RI was identified as the most important factor having influence on the sound quality metrics.

A numerical simulation of flame propagation in a micro combustor was carried out. Combustor has a sub -millimeter depth cylindrical internal volume and axisymmetric one-dimensional was used to simplify the geometry. Semi-empirical heat transfer model was used to account for the heat loss to the walls during the flame propagation. A detailed chemical kinetics model of $H_2/Air$ with 10 species and 16 reaction steps was used to calculate the combustion. An operator-splitting PISO scheme that is non-iterative, time-dependent, and implicit was used to solve the system of transport equations. The computation was validated for adiabatic flame propagation and showed good agreement with existing results of adiabatic flame propagation. A full simulation including the heat loss model was carried out and results were compared with measurements made at corresponding test conditions. The heat loss that adds its significance at smaller value of combust or height obviously affected the flame propagation speed as final temperature of the burnt gas inside the combustor. Also, the distribution of gas properties such as temperature and species concentration showed wide variation inside the combustor, which affected the evaluation of total work available of the gases.
The Measurement of concentration patterns for $C_2$, CH and OH radicals in the premixed propane-air flame could be managed through an image processing technique. This technique was applied to the three kinds of flames on a bunsen burner-mixtures of fuel to be lean, optimum and excessive respectively. The image processing system was complished by treating single wavelength flame images around the eac radical luminescence band, which was obtained by using a set of narrow band pass filters, an image intensifier, CCD and PC. It was possible to observe and predict the reaction zone and the concentration distribution of the radicals, Spatial distribution of each radicals in the raaction zone gave us enough informations to analyze the reaction mechanisms in $C_mH_n$ combustion process. According to this informations, the image of $C_2$ radical exists at front zone, following the images of CH and OH radicals at downstream.

High-frequency combustion instability results from a feedback coupling between the unsteady heat release rate and the acoustic waves formed resonantly in the combustion chamber. It can be modeled as thermoacoustic problems with various degrees of the assumptions and simplifications. This paper presents numerical analysis of self-excited combustion instabilities in a variable-length lean-premixed combustor and designs of passive control devices such as baffle and acoustic resonators in a framework of 3-D FEM Helmholtz solver. Nonlinear behaviors such as steep-fronted shock waves and a finite amplitude limit cycle are also investigated with a compressible flow simulation technique.
This study described the experimental investigations of combustion instability in a model gas turbine combustor. Strong coupling between pressure oscillations and unsteady heat release excites a self-sustained acoustic wave, which results in a loud and annoyed sound, and may also lead to a structural damage to the combustion system. In this study, in order to examine the combustion instability phenomenon of a dual swirling combustor configuration, the information of heat release and pressure fluctuation period with respect to the variation in both thermal power and combustor length was collected experimentally. As a result, the fundamental acoustic frequency turned out to increase with the increasing thermal power without respect to the combustor length. The frequency response to the combustor length was found to have two distinct regimes. In a higher power regime the frequency significantly decreases with the combustor length, as it is expected from the resonance of gas column. However, in a lower power regime it is almost insensitive to the combustor length. This insensitive response might be a result of the beating phenomenon between the interacting pilot and main flames with different periods.

Controlled Auto Ignition(CAI) combustion has great potential in achieving significant increase in engine efficiency, while simultaneously reducing exhaust emissions. The process itself involves the auto ignition and subsequent simultaneous combustion of a premixed charge. In this study, NVO(Negative Valve Overlap) system was applied to a CAI engine in order to use residual gas. The fuel was injected directly to the cylinder under the high temperature condition resulting from heating the intake port to initiate CAI combustion. This paper introduced the valve timing strategy and experimental set-up. From this study, the effect of engine speed and valve timing on CAI combustion and exhaust emissions was clarified. In addition, stratified charge method was used to extend CAI operating region.

Experimental study was carried out in an atmospheric pressure, laboratory-scale dump combustor showing features of combustion instabilities. Flame structure and heat release rates were obtained from OH emission spectroscopy. Qualitative comparisons were made between line-integrated OH chemiluminescence image and Abel-transformed one. Local Rayleigh index distributions were also examined. Mean temperature, normalized standard deviation and temperature fluctuations were measured by coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy (CARS). To see the periodic behavior of oscillating flames, phase-resolved measurements were performed with respect to the pressure wave in the combustor. Results on system damping and driving characteristics were provided as a function of equivalence ratio. It also could be observed that phase resolved temperatures have been changed in a well-defined manner, while its difference between maximum and minimum reached up to 280K. These results would be expected to play an important role in better understanding of driving mechanisms and thermo-acoustic interactions.

The laminar burning velocity of endothermic fuel surrogates is measured in this study, in order to investigate combustion characteristics of aviation fuel after being used as coolant in an active cooling system of a hypersonic flight vehicle. A Bunsen burner was manufactured such that the laminar burning velocity can be taken for two types of surrogate fuels, SF-1 and 2. The results showed that the burning velocity of surrogate fuels was faster at high equivalence ratio conditions than that of the reference fuel (RF), and specifically, the velocity of SF-1 had the maximum value at the highest equivalence ratio compared with those of SF-2 and RF.
