  • In this study, the preliminary risk assessment for the underground storage tanks(UST) in Chunchon city was implemented using the geographical information system(GIS). The estimation variables, such as the installation year, storage capacity, the distances from streams, and from groundwater pumping wells, were selected to estimate the relative risk levels. The weighting factors were given to all the estimation variables. Cumulative scores were induced by the combination of all the scores of the corresponding variables using the buffering technique and the overlay analysis in ArcView. Using the these process, the relative risk level of each UST was estimated. Some sites in this study are simplified and reduced because the number of useable data are limited or too enormous. Thus the selection of the comprehensive estimation variables and the proper weighting values are required for the future study. The methodology in this study could be served not only for the preliminary risk assessment of UST but also for the selection of the proper location of new and old UST. And, it can be used for the effective management system of UST.

  • Preliminary feasibility study(PFS) was introduced in 1999 by financial authority to encourage a cautious approach to new large-scale public investment project. As it applied cost-benefit analysis as prime measure for decision-making, various issues have been arisen concerning feasibility analysis on R&D programs. This work is intended to suggest standard approaches to be established in PFS on R&D program as follows: 1. The issue questions can be induced in a standard way by 15 representative questions and their correlation with evaluation criteria. 2. The analyzing strategy can be standardized by establishing standards for classification of R&D effects and R&D logic analysis.

  • The use of Field-Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) in the development of safety-related Human-Machine Interface (HMI) systems has gained much momentum in nuclear applications. Recently, one of the application areas for the Advanced Power Reactor 1400 (APR1400) is in the development of the advanced Component Interface Module (CIM) of the Engineered Safety Features Actuation System (ESFAS). Using systems engineering approach, we have developed a new FPGA-based advanced CIM software. The first step of our software development process involves the Preliminary Hazard Analysis (PHA) based on the previous CIM design. In this paper, we describe the qualitative approach used in performing the preliminary hazard analysis. The paper presents the methodology for applying a modified Hazard and Operability (HAZOP) procedure for the conduct of PHA which resulted in a qualitative risk-ranking scheme that informed the decisions for the safety criteria in the requirements specification phase. The qualitative approach provided the justification for design changes during the advanced CIM software development process.

  • Generally, the time history analysis among seismic response analyses of a structure needs more times than static analysis. Therefore the mechanical model of a structure has been used as a simple lumped parameter model in time history analysis. For the most cases, the simple mechanical model shows the similar results to that of detailed finite element model. so it is reasonable to use the simple mode] in preliminary analysis. In seismic design of liquid storage tank, such as LNG storage tank, the lumped parameter mode] also is being used in preliminary analysis, however sometimes shows the differences to the results of detailed finite element model. Therefore in this study, the dynamic characteristics between lumped parameter model and detailed finite model is compared for the variables such as height/diameter of liquid-storage tank and thickness of wall, then the applicability of beam mode] to the seismic response analysis are evaluated for some liquid storage tanks.

  • This study attempted to present the direction of the documentation strategy to lay the foundation for preserving and using the modern and contemporary publishing culture in Daegu. To this end, the authors applied the phase of the "documentation area definition and preliminary analysis" suggested in Hackman's model. In the preliminary analysis phase, the authors investigated the cases of documentation on specific topics and conducted interviews with those concerned with documenting the publishing culture of Daegu. The findings of interviews were presented by the categories, such as "the value of Daegu's modern and contemporary publishing culture," "the object and method of collection," "documentation group," and "difficulties and limitations." With these findings, the authors proposed the main elements of a documentation strategy and revised it based on the feedback from two archivists. The proposed elements consist of the purpose, temporal, geographical, and morphological ranges, roles by group, reference sources, prior work, and the consideration for collection and operation. The preliminary analysis of this study will serve as a foundation for preserving and transmitting Daegu's publishing culture.

  • The turbine is an important component and has a significant impact on the thermodynamic efficiency of the organic Rankine cycle. A precise preliminary design is essential to developing efficient turbines. In addition, performance analysis and structural analysis are needed to evaluate the performance and structural safety. However, there are only a few exclusive studies on the development process of the radial inflow turbines for the organic Rankine cycle (ORC). In this study, a preliminary design of the ORC radial inflow turbine was performed. Subsequently, the performance and structural analysis were also carried out. The RTDM, which was developed as an in-house code, was used in the preliminary design process. The results of the performance analysis were found to be in good agreement with target performances. Structural analysis of the designed turbine was also carried out in order to determine whether the material selection for this study is suitable for the flow conditions of the designed turbine, and it was found that the selected aluminum alloy is suitable for the designed turbine. However, the reliability of the preliminary design algorithms and numerical methods should be strictly verified by an actual experimental test.

  • Nonlinear static analysis and preliminary evaluation were performed in this study to evaluate the seismic performance of unreinforced masonry buildings subjected to various soil conditions based on the revised Korean Building Code. Preliminary evaluation scores and nonlinear static analyses indicated that all buildings were susceptible to collapse and did not reach their target performance. Therefore, retrofit of those building models was carried out through a systematic procedure to determine areas to be strengthened. It was possible to make most building models satisfy performance objectives through the reinforcement alone of damaged external shear walls. However, the application of a preliminary evaluation procedure to retrofit design was found to be too conservative because all the retrofitted building models verified with nonlinear static analysis failed to satisfy performance objectives. Therefore, it is possible to economically retrofit unreinforced masonry buildings through the fortification of external walls if a simple evaluation procedure that can efficiently specify vulnerable parts is developed.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop an instrument to assess nursing professional pride. Methods: Fifty-six preliminary items were identified through literature review and focus group interview of nurses working in a hospital. Of these, 45 preliminary instruments were completed over 0.80 of content validity index. To verify the reliability and validity of the preliminary instrument, data were collected from 294 nurses. The data were analyzed using factor analysis and multidimensional scaling analysis. Results: From the factor analysis, 27 significant items were divided into 5 subscales. These subscales were as follows: feeling of vocation, role satisfaction, role of problem solver, self-achievement, and willingness to stay. The nursing professional pride also established criterion-related validity, discriminant validity, and group validity. Cronbach's α of the instrument was .92, and the subscales ranged from .74 to .85. Conclusion: The developed scale for nursing professional pride shows validity and reliability. The significance of this study is the development of an instrument capable of measuring nursing professional pride. To verify the relevance of this instrument, conducting comparative studies is suggested.
