  • Black-tailed gulls (Larus crassirostris) produce alarm calls apparently related to their anti-predator behaviors, but the hypothesis that the calls are actually used as functionally referential alarm signals has not yet been tested. In this study, we performed a series of experiments using visual (a stuffed goshawk: Accipiter gentilis) and acoustic (alarm calls and a control vocalization) stimuli at 15 sites in Sinjindo-ri and Dowhang-ri, Taean-gun, Chungnam province to examine anti-predator responses of the gulls to alarm calls in playback trials. We found that the gulls' visual recognition of a perched hawk model in the absence of alarm vocalizations was weak or absent because the model was noticed in only two out of 16 trials. The gulls' responses to playbacks of the alarm call only and the alarm call with a visual stimulus differed from responses to the control vocalization in latency to approach, time mobbing, and the percentage of gulls responding, while the responses to alarm call only differed from alarm call with a visual stimulus in latency to first fly, latency to call, and time mobbing. The results of this study suggest that alarm calls of black-tailed gulls are used to elicit appropriate anti-predator behaviors that are intensified when a predator is detected visually.

  • The stink bug, Eocanthecona furcellata (Wolff.) is a natural and potential biocontrol agent of Spilarctia obliqua (Walk.). The present investigation reveals the biology, predatory efficiency and reproductive parameters of the predator which feeds on S. obliqua caterpillars in mulberry plantation. In order to find out the role of prey sine on the biology of the predators the predatory insects were separately fed with small and large caterpillars of S. obliqua. The incubation period of the eggs of E. furcellata was 8.37${\pm}$0.44 days, while the nymphal duration varied as per the prey sine. The predator when supplied with small larvae of prey, consumed 61.1 larvae and completed nymphal stage in 19.9 days; while those fed with larger prey, consumed 36.1 larvae and completed their nymphal stage in 21.55 days. The prey size also influences the reproductive parameters of the predator, The adult female predator is more voracious feeder than the adult male and consumed 41.9${\pm}$0.64 small larvae and 42.2${\pm}$0.87 large larvae during their life span. The longevity of male and female was observed as 20.7 and 29.4 days respectively. Visualization of the predator as well as the movement of the prey increases the predatory efficiency. Scanning electron microscopic studies on the feeding part explain its support in effective predation. Field observations indicated a drastic fall in the incidence of the mulberry pest, S. obliqua with the increased population E. furcellata in mulberry plantation.

  • In this paper, we investigate the dynamics of the mathematical model of two non-interacting preys in presence of their common natural enemy (predator) based on the non-autonomous differential equations. We establish sufficient conditions for the permanence, extinction and global stability in the general non-autonomous case. In the periodic case, by means of the continuation theorem in coincidence degree theory, we establish a set of sufficient conditions for the existence of a positive periodic solutions with strictly positive components. Also, we give some sufficient conditions for the global asymptotic stability of the positive periodic solution.

  • In the present paper we consider a differential-algebraic prey-predator model with stage structure for prey and harvesting of predator species. Stability and instability of the equilibrium points are discussed and it is observed that the model exhibits a singular induced bifurcation when the economic profit is zero. It indicates that the zero economic profit brings impulse, i.e. rapid expansion of the population and the system collapses. For the purpose of stabilizing the system around the positive equilibrium, a state feedback controller is designed. Finally, numerical simulations are given to show the consistency with theoretical analysis.

  • In this paper, we study a delayed predator-prey system with Holling type IV functional response incorporating the effect of habitat complexity. The results show that there exist stability switches and Hopf bifurcation occurs while the delay crosses a set of critical values. The explicit formulas which determine the direction and stability of Hopf bifurcation are obtained by the normal form theory and the center manifold theorem.

  • This paper treats the conditions for the existence and stability properties of stationary solutions of a predator-prey interaction with self and cross-diffusion. We show that at a certain critical value a diffusion driven instability occurs, i.e. the stationary solution stays stable with respect to the kinetic system (the system without diffusion) but becomes unstable with respect to the system with diffusion and that Turing instability takes place. We note that the cross-diffusion increase or decrease a Turing space (the space which the emergence of spatial patterns is holding) compared to the Turing space with self-diffusion, i.e. the cross-diffusion response is an important factor that should not be ignored when pattern emerges.

  • We consider a delayed predator prey model. The local stability and Hopf bifurcation results are stated taking the time delay as a control parameter. We apply multiple scale analysis to analyze the effects of additive white noises near the Hopf bifurcation point at the positive interior equilibrium state. The governing equations for the amplitude of oscillations on a slow time scale are derived. We identify the process of amplitude of oscillations and derive its transient properties. We show that oscillations, which would decay in the deterministic system whenever time delay lies below its critical value, persists for long time under the validity of multiple scale analysis.

  • In this paper, we consider a discrete ratio-dependent predator-prey system with harvesting effect. In order to investigate dynamical behaviors of this system, first we find out all fixed points of the system and then classify their stabilities by using their Jacobian matrices and local stability method. Next, we display some numerical examples to substantiate theoretical results and finally, we show numerically, by means of a bifurcation diagram, that various dynamical behaviors including cycles, periodic doubling bifurcation and chaotic bands can be existed.
