  • The purpose of this study was to evaluate the spatial changes of mesial-in rotated maxillary molar and opposite anchor tooth during derotation by the precision transpalatal arch (TPA) with the use of a new typodont simulation system, the Calorific machine system, which was designed to observe the whole process of tooth movement. The maxillary right first molar was used for the anchor tooth and the maxillary left first molar was used for the mesial-in rotated tooth, and the angle of rotation was increased to 20,40, and 60. A passive precision TPA was fabricated and then activated by bending the left arm to 20, 40, and 60. Each experiment was repeated five times under the same conditions and analyzed by ANOVA and Tucky's Studentized Range (HSD) test. In the occlusal plane, when the bending angle of precision TPA was increased, the mesiobuccal cusp of the rotated molar moved more buccally (p<0.001) and less distally (p<0.001) while the distolingual cusp moved in the mesiopalatal direction. In the sagittal plane, the palatal roots of the derotated molar moved mesially (p<0.001). In the traverse plane, the derotated molar showed slight extrusion (p<0.001). The upper right first molar, which was used as an anchor tooth, showed clinically insignificant movement across all three planes.

  • In early design stage, the simulation of interior noise is useful for the enhancement of the noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) performance in a vehicle. The traditional transfer path analysis (TPA) technology cannot simulate the interior noise since it uses the experimental method. In order to solve this problem, in this paper, the hybrid TPA is developed as the novel approach. The hybrid TPA uses the simulated excitation force as the input force, which excites the flexible body of a car at the mount point, while the traditional TPA uses the measured force. This simulated force is obtained by numerical analysis for the FE (finite element) model of a powertrain. The interior noise is predicted by multiplying the simulated force by the vibro-acoustic transfer function (VATF) of the vehicle. The VATF is the acoustic response in the compartment of a car to the input force at the mount point of the powertrain in the flexible car body. The trend of the predicted interior noise based on the hybrid TPA very well corresponds to the measured interior noise, although there is some difference due to not only the experimental error and the simulation error but also the effect of the air-borne path.

  • The excitation force of a powertrain is one of major sources for the interior noise of a vehicle. This paper presents a novel approach to predict the interior noise caused by the vibration of the power rain by using the hybrid TPA (transfer path analysis) method. Although the traditional transfer path analysis (TPA) is useful for the identification of powertrain noise sources, it is difficult to modify the structure of a powertrain by using the experimental method for the reduction of vibration and noise. In order to solve this problem, the vibration of the power rain in a vehicle is numerically analyzed by using the finite element method (FEM). The vibration of the other parts in a vehicle is investigated by using the experimental method based on vibrato-acoustic transfer function (VATF) analysis. These two methods are combined for the prediction of interior noise caused by a power rain. Throughout this research, two papers are presented. This paper presents a simulation of the excitation force of the power rain exciting the vehicle body based on numerical simulation. The other paper presents a prediction of interior noise based on the hybrid TPA, which uses the VATF of the car body and the excitation force predicted in this paper.

  • Dr. Youn-Sic Chun and coworkers invented the new machine for getting information about the relative effectiveness of the orthodontic appliances and we named it Calorific machine. The author and colleagues used this machine to compare with tooth moving mechanism by 3 types of the insertion method of precision-TPA for derotating the posterior teeth. We measured the distance of tooth movement and found out the rotational center on the occlusal X-ray film and the tooth movement on the occlusogram and then processed paired t-test by SAS program, The results were as follows : 1. In the intermolar width, the mesial insertion method showed the loss oi distance, and the other methods(-distal insertion method, mesial expansion method-) showed the increase of distance. 2. In the arch length, the distal insertion method was exhibited as most recommandable way for increasing the arch length .3. The rotation center of the mesial insertion method for derotating the molar, was located between mesial pit and central pit of the lower End molar. And, in the distal insertion method, it was located between distal pit and distolingual cusp, and in the mesial expansion method was located at distal pit.

  • A scheme to control the laser power and the exposure time was studied to fabricate precise microstructures using the nanostereolithography (nSL) process. Some recent works have shown that a three-dimensional (3D) microstructure can be fabricated by the photopolymerizing process which is induced by two-photon absorption (TPA) with a femtosecond pulse laser. TPA provides the ability to confine photochemical and physical reactions within the order of laser wavelength, so neardiffraction limit features can be produced. In the nSL process, voxels are continuously generated to form a layer and then another layer is stacked in the normal direction of a plane to construct a 3D structure. Thus, fabrication of a voxel with low aspect ratio and small diameter is one of the most important parameters for fabricating precise 3D microstructures. In this work, the mechanism of a voxel formation is studied and a scheme on the control of laser power and exposure for minimizing aspect ratio of a voxel is proposed.

  • Development of maskless lithography techniques can provide a potential solution for the photomask cost issue. Furthermore, it could open a market for small scale manufacturing applications. Since femtosecond lasers have been found suitable for processing of a wide range of materials with sub-micrometer resolution, it is attractive to use this technique for maskless lithography. As a femtosecond laser has recently been developed, both of high power and high photon density are easily obtained. The high photon density results in photopolymerization of photoresist whose absorption spectrum is shorter than that of the femtosecond laser. The maskless lithography using the two-photon absorption (TPA) makes micro structures. In this paper, we present a femtosecond laser direct write lithography for submicron PR patterning, which show great potential for future application.

  • A laser beam expanding technique is employed to fabricate precise nano-patterns in a nano-replication printing (nRP) process. In the nRP process, some patterns can be fabricated in the range of several microns inside on a polymerizable resin by using a volume-pixel (voxel) matrix that is transformed from a two-tone bitmap figure file. The liquid monomers are polymerized by means of a two-photon-absorption (TPA) phenomenon that is induced by a femtosecond (fs)-pulse laser. The yokels are generated consecutively to merge into adjoining yokels in the process of fabricating a pattern. The resolution of a fabricated pattern can be obtained under the diffraction limit of a laser beam by the two-photon absorbed polymerization (TPP). In this work, a beam-expanding technique has been applied to enlarge a working area and to fabricate precise patterns. Through this work, a working area is expanded by the technique as much as 2.5 times compared with a case of without a beam expanding technique, and precision of outside patterns is improved.

  • A vacuum pressure-difference technique for making a nano-precision replica is investigated for various applications. Master patterns for replication were fabricated using a nano-replication printing (nRP) process. In the nRP process, any picture and pattern can be replicated from a bitmap figure file in the range of several micrometers with resolution of 200nm. A liquid-state monomer is solidified by two-photon absorption (TPA) induced by a femto-second laser according to a voxel matrix scanning. After polymerization, the remaining monomers were removed simply by using ethanol droplets. And then, a gold metal layer of about 30nm thickness was deposited on the fabricated master patterns prior to polydimethylsiloxane molding for preventing bonding between the master and the polydimethylsiloxane mold. A few gold particles attached on the polydimethylsiloxane stamp during detaching process were removed by a gold selecting etchant. After fabricating the polydimethylsiloxane mold, a nano-precision polydimethylsiloxane replica was reproduced. More precise replica was produced by the vacuum pressure-difference technique that is proposed in this paper. Through this study, direct patterning on a glass plate, replicating a polydimethylsiloxane mold, and reproducing polydimethylsiloxane replica are demonstrated with a vacuum pressure-difference technique for various micro/nano-applications.
