  • The purpose of this study is to define the special characteristics of the neoclassic style in eighteenth to nineteenth century fashion. Researching into philosophy and aesthetics in eighteenth to nineteenth century, the characteristics of the neoclassic style in fashion is considered the clarity of form, the utility of function, and the sensuality combined with body. The results of this study are as follows: The clarify of form is found in geometric form based on anatomical truth of the human body in relation with rational and scientific thoughts. The utility of function is found in simple and suitable construction considering purely practical purpose of dresses. The sensuality combined with body is found in natural silhouette dress alluding naked body in connection with Rousseau' naturalism. Understanding aesthetic value of the neoclassic style will help to develop fashion designs associated with neoclassical forms.

  • Recently, performance based seismic design (PBSD) methods in numerous forms have been suggested and widely studied as a new concept of seismic design. The PBDSs are far from being practical due to complexity of algorithms resided in the design philosophy In this paper, optimal seismic design method based on displacement coefficient method (DCM) described in FEMA 273 is developed. As an optimizer simple genetic algorithms are used for implementations. In the optimization problem formulated in this paper, strength design criteria, stiffness design criteria, and nonlinear response criteria specified in DCM are included in design constraints. The optimal performance based design(OPBD) method is applied to seismic design of a 9-story two-dimensional steel frame structures.

  • A pilot parent education program composed of 8 two-hour sessions was developed on the philosophy of a democratic parent-child relationship. The program focused not only on a concept of personal respect toward children but on change in parenting behaviors through a process of problem-solving. Problem-solving was implemented by encouraging active participation of parents in developing an understanding of the causes of problem behavior and searching for their own solutions. 19 mothers aged 29 to 37 were pre- and post-tested. Two months later, 15 of them responded to a questionnaire (follow-up test). Their concepts of children and parenting behaviors changed dramatically shortly after participation in the program. However, results of the follow-up test showed the such gains are not always long lasting. This implies that further investigation is needed for helping mothers retain the effectiveness of the program.

  • This paper proposes Headed bar as reinforcement of beam-column joint, and proves seismic performance and reduction of reinforcement congestion. In these case, the use of Headed bars have obvious advantages. The greatest benefit of using Headed bars is not only improved structural performance of beam-column joints, but also the ease of fabrication, construction, and placement. Three-dimensional finite element analysis model is compared with test program which was fulfilled by the proposed model with Headed bar. Also, the plastic hinge region is relocated to the center of the longitudinal beam length according to the strong column-weak beam design philosophy, so Headed bar is used as the joint reinforcement. Therefore, this paper presents results of a computer analysis of a practical solution for relocating potential beam plastic hinge regions by the placing of straight - Headed bar.

  • The OAI(Open Archives Initiative) is an evolving protocol and philosophy regarding interoperability for digital libraries. This protocol has its roots in an effort to enhance access to digital libraries as a means of increasing the availability of scholarship communication. Thus, this research outlines the history of the OAI protocol, the basic model of SP(service provider)/DP(data provider), and the prerequisites to implement the OAI protocol. Viewed in this light, this paper also describes the experiences of KERIS project of SP/DP model and lists the differences between prerequisites and KERIS case.

  • Many different schemes of the adaptive observer and controller have been developed for both continuous and discrete systems. In this paper we have presented a new scheme of the reduced order adaptive observer for the single input discrete linear time invariant plant. The output equation of the plant, is transformed into the bilinear form in terms of system parameters and the states of the state variable filters. Using the plant output equation the discrete implicit adaptive observer based on the similar philosophy to Nuyan and Carroll is derived and the parameter adaptation algorithm is derived based on the exponentially weighted least square method. The adaptive model following control system is also constructed according to the proposed observer scheme. The proposed observer and controller are rather than simple structure and have a fast adaptive algorithm, so it may be expected that the scheme is suitable to the practical application of control system design. The effectiveness of the algorithm and structure is illustrated by the computer simulation of a third order system. The simulation results show that the convergence speed is proportinal to the increasing of weighting factor alpha, and that the full order and reduced order observer have similar convergence characteristics.

  • Correlations between "The Book of Changes" and medicine originate from the first publication of the book. Korean Traditional Medicine is no exception in following this tendency of making connections between the two fields. A Chinese medical text, "의학정전" is the most frequently cited text in a Korean medical text "Euirimchalyo". Upon examining the two texts focusing on the 종창, 임폐문 that discusses 비괘, it could be seen that Euirimchalyo edited out the philosophical contents of 의학정전 as much as possible. Thus, on examination of the text, it can be concluded that 의림촬요 takes no part in the Korean history of medical philosophy. This indicates that 의림촬요 is a medical text that purses practicality and efficiency though selectively summarizing.

  • In this paper, we argue that for general education in engineering, humanistic education is important, thus we propose an illustration of course outline. Recent general education for engineering is focused on only more practical, socially oriented courses, for example, business, law, economics, and entrepreneurship. While these courses are helpful for engineering students, humanistic education is more fundamental for improving the students' capacity for insight, originality and constructing the holistic view. We propose a course "Philosophy of Time and Space" as an example which fit this purpose.

  • The purpose of this study is to compare and analyze the educational philosophy, goal, method, content, and environment of ecologically-oriented alternative elementary schools and suggest several practical methods for alternative education. Both ecologism and alternative education pursue sustainable values. The educational content of ecologically-oriented alternative elementary schools, analyzed from the view of sustainable development, focuses most on the natural resources, biodiversity, and sustainable food production, and also include human rights, peace and security, unification, cultural diversity, and health food in terms of the social sustainability and sustainable production and consumption concerning economic sustainability. This study should help environmental education become establish its possibility and position as alternative education and be recognized of its educational value. Furthermore, based on the cases of ecologically-oriented alternative elementary schools that are becoming 'garden of environmental education' as sustainable development education, it should lead to 'education communicating with environmental education at schools'.
