Impedance Calculation of Power Distribution Networks for High-Speed DRAM Module Design (고속DRAM모듈 설계에 대한 전원평면의 임피던스계산)

  • A systematic design approach for Power distribution network (PDN) is presented aiming at applications to DRAM module designs. Three main stages are comprised in this design approach: modeling and simulation of a PDN based on a two-dimensional transmission line structure employing a partial element equivalent circuit (PEEC); verification of the simulation results through comparison to measured values; and design space scanning with PDN parameters. Impedance characteristics for do-coupling capacitors are analyzed to devise an effective way to stabilize power and ground plane Performance within a target level of disturbances. Self-impedance and transfer-impedance are studied in terms of distance between circuit features and the size of do-coupling capacitors. A simple equation has been derived to find the do-coupling capacitance values yielding impedance lower than design target, and thereby reducing the overall computation time. The effectiveness of the design methodology has been demonstrated using a DRAM module with discrete do-coupling capacitors and a strip structure.

Design of a Micro-strip Patch Array Antenna using CRLH Transmission Line Power Divider Supporting Infinite Wavelength (무한파장 전파특성을 갖는 CRLH 전송선로 전력 분배기를 이용한 마이크로스트립 패치 배열 안테나의 설계)

  • In this paper, an equally spaced $3{\times}2$ microstrip patch array antenna based on the fundamental infinite wavelength supported by the composite right/left-handed (CRLH) transmission line (TL) is proposed. The proposed CRLH TL unit cell consists of an inter-digit capacitor to realize left-handed (LH) series capacitance and non-symmetric shunt meander line with a shorted via to realize LH shunt inductance. At the infinite wavelength frequency of 2.09 GHz a 6-port series power divider consisting of a 19 unit cells shows a maximum magnitude difference of 0.73 dB and a $0.52^{\circ}$ maximum phase difference between output ports. The measured resonant frequency and maximum gain of the fabricated array antenna is 2.09 GHz and 10.98 dBi, respectively.

A Power Plane Using the Hybrid-Cell EBG Structure for the Suppression of GBN/SSN (GBN/SSN 억제를 위한 이종 셀 EBG 구조를 갖는 전원면)

  • In this paper, a novel power/ground plane using the hybrid-cell electromagnetic band-gap(EBG) structure is proposed for the wide-band suppression of the ground bound noise(GBN) or simultaneous switching noise(SSN). The -30 dB stopband of the proposed structure starts from a few hundred MHz where the GBN/SSN energy is dominant. The distinctive features of this new structure are the thin spiral strip line and hybrid-cells. They realize the enhanced inductance and the shorter period of the EBG lattice. As a result, the lower cut-off frequency and bandwidth of the -30 dB stopband becomes lower and wider, respectively. In addition, the proposed structure has smaller number of resonance modes between power/ground planes and performs a low EMI behavior compared with the reference board.

  • The highest priority of the cruise trip is the safety and comfort of its passengers. Though the cruise lines take every appropriate measure to ensure that their Passengers are safe and experience enjoyable vacations it is hard to fulfill all passenger's personnel requirement with limited number of crews. Generally, each passenger is issued an identification card which contains their digital photo and personal identification information on a magnetic strip that he or she must present when entering or leaving the ship. This technology allows the ship to know which Passengers and crew members are on board and which are not. However, this system has some limitations of functions and usage. To support each passenger as his or her personal liking, additional number of crews or some kind of new system is needed. In this paper, the crew support system based on sensor network using wireless and wired communication technologies was studied. To design the system, PLC(Power Line Communication) system and ZigBee based passenger location recognition, classification system has studied experimentally. By using this system, crews can serve passengers more closely and personally with less effort.

Studies on a Feasibility of Swine Farm Wastewater Treatment using Microbial Fuel Cell (미생물연료전지의 가축분뇨 처리 가능성 연구)

  • In this study the feasibility of simultaneous electricity generation and treatment of swine farm wastewater using microbial fuel cells (MFCs) was examined. Two single-chamber MFCs containing an anode filled with different ratio of graphite felt and stainless-steel cross strip was used in all tests. The proportion of stainless-steel cross strip to graphite felt in the anode of control microbial fuel cell (CMFC) was higher than that of swine microbial fuel cell (SMFC) to reduce construction costs. SMFCs produced a stable current of 18 mA by swine wastewater with chemical oxygen demand (COD) of $3.167{\pm}80\;mg/L$ after enriched. The maximum power density and current density of SMFCs were $680\;mW/m^3$ and $3,770\;mA/m^3$, respectively. In the CMFC, power density and current density was lower than that of SMFC. CODs decreased by the SMFC and CMFC from $3.167{\pm}80$ to $865{\pm}21$ and $930{\pm}14\;mg/L$, achieving 72.7% and 70.6% COD removal, respectively. The suspended solid (SS) of both fuel cells was also reduced over 99% ($4,533{\pm}67$ to $24.0{\pm}6.0\;mg/L$). The concentration of nutritive salts, ${NH_4}^+$, ${NO_3}^-$, and ${PO_4}^{3-}$, dropped by 65.4%, 57.5%, and 73.7% by the SMFC, respectively. These results were similar with those of CMFC. These results show that the microbial fuel cells using electrode with mix stainless-steel cross strip and graphite felt can treat the swine wastewater simultaneously with an electricity generation from swine wastewater.

  • Synthetic Aperture Radars(SAR) are used mainly for high-resolution imaging of the terrain. This paper describes the 16$\times$16 array antenna designed for an X-band, automobile-based SAR(AutoSAR) system. This antenna has the structure of several layers such as radome, radiators, slots, feed network, and honeycomb cores. Each layer is adhesively bonded to meet different combination of structural and electrical design requirements. Using the Strip-Slot-Foam-Inverted-Patch(SSFIP) structure and dogbone slots, a wide bandwidth and a structural hardness were achieved. Measurement results were compared with simulation results. It was observed that the SAR antenna had a bandwidth of 1.7 GHz, side-lobe levels of less than -20 dB, half-power beamwidth of 5$^{\circ}$, and gains of 25.0 dBi. The observed results show that the designed array antenna is suitable for the broadband AutoSAR system.

Computation of High Temperature Friction Coefficient of SCM435 Steel (SCM435 강의 고온마찰계수 계산)

  • In this study, an approach designed to compute high temperature friction coefficients for SCM 435 steel through a pilot hot rolling test and a finite element analysis, is proposed. Single pass pilot hot flat rolling tests with reduction ratios varying from 20 to 40% were carried out at temperatures ranging from 900 to $1200^{\circ}C$. In the proposed approach, the friction coefficient is calculated by comparing the measured strip spread and the roll force with the simulation results. This study showed that the temperature and reduction ratio had a significant influence on the friction coefficient. As both material temperature and reduction ratio become higher, the friction coefficient increases monotonically. This finding is not in agreement with the Ekelund model, which is widely used in the analysis of the hot rolling process. In the present work, the friction coefficient at a reduction ratio of 40% was found to be 1.2 times greater than that at a reduction of 30%. This higher friction coefficient means that an increment of the roll thrust force is expected at the next stand. Therefore, a roll pass designer must understand this phenomenon in order to adjust the reduction ratio at the stands while keeping the driving power, the roll housing structure and the work roll strength within the allowable range.

  • A very abnormal vibration was occurred at the LP(low pressure) turbine continuously during the pre-operation for a 550MW class USC(ultra super critical) steam turbine. This vibration was initiated at the rotating speed of about 3,450rpm and then the vibration amplitude was highly increased the number by $2{\sim}3$ times with the increase of the rotating speed to the rated speed(3,600rpm). In this paper, this abnormal vibration named spike vibration. This spike vibration was caused by the rubbing between the rotating bucket tip seal and the Lower Half of spill strip. Also, this paper presents the mechanism of the spike vibration and the proper method to eliminate this abnormal vibration problem. This result would be good practice to find the solution of similar high vibration in the USC steam turbines for power plant as well as industrial rotating machineries.

Controlling a lamprey-based robot with an electronic nervous system

  • We are developing a biomimetic robot based on the Sea Lamprey. The robot consists of a cylindrical electronics bay propelled by an undulatory body axis. Shape memory alloy (SMA) actuators generate propagating flexion waves in five undulatory segments of a polyurethane strip. The behavior of the robot is controlled by an electronic nervous system (ENS) composed of networks of discrete-time map-based neurons and synapses that execute on a digital signal processing chip. Motor neuron action potentials gate power transistors that apply current to the SMA actuators. The ENS consists of a set of segmental central pattern generators (CPGs), modulated by layered command and coordinating neuron networks, that integrate input from exteroceptive sensors including a compass, accelerometers, inclinometers and a short baseline sonar array (SBA). The CPGs instantiate the 3-element hemi-segmental network model established from physiological studies. Anterior and posterior propagating pathways between CPGs mediate intersegmental coordination to generate flexion waves for forward and backward swimming. The command network mediates layered exteroceptive reflexes for homing, primary orientation, and impediment compensation. The SBA allows homing on a sonar beacon by indicating deviations in azimuth and inclination. Inclinometers actuate a bending segment between the hull and undulator to allow climb and dive. Accelerometers can distinguish collisions from impediment to allow compensatory reflexes. Modulatory commands mediate speed control and turning. A SBA communications interface is being developed to allow supervised reactive autonomy.

A Flat-Plate Antenna Employing Semi-Annular Slots for Satellite Broadcast Reception (반원형 고리 슬롯을 이용한 평판형 위성방송 수신 안테나)

  • In this paper, we proposed a flate-plate antenna employing semi-annular slots for satellite broadcast reception. The radiating element of the antenna is dual annular slots fed by a strip dipole, which have a wider bandwidth than the rectangular slot. A $16{\times}16$ array antenna is designed using stripline T-junction power dividers. Measurements of the fabricated antenna show a gain of 28.0$\~$29.5 dB in 11.7$\~$12.8 GHz frequency range.
