  • Computer aided engineering (CAE) is a systematic approach to develop a better product/application with maximum possible options and minimum transition time. This paper presents a comprehensive feasibility analysis of various CAE techniques for evaluation and optimization of power electronic converters and systems. Different CAE methods for analysis, design, and performance improvement are classified. In addition, their advantages compared to the conventional workbench experimental methods are explained in detail and through examples.

  • Recently, the power consumption of integrated circuits has been attracting increasing attention. Many techniques have been studied to improve the power efficiency of digital signal processing units such as fast Fourier transform (FFT) processors, which are popularly employed in both traditional research fields, such as satellite communications, and thriving consumer electronics, such as wireless communications. This paper presents solutions based on parallel architectures for high throughput and power efficient FFT cores. Different combinations of hybrid low-power techniques are exploited to reduce power consumption, such as multiplierless units which replace the complex multipliers in FFTs, low-power commutators based on an advanced interconnection, and parallel-pipelined architectures. A number of FFT cores are implemented and evaluated for their power/area performance. The results show that up to 38% and 55% power savings can be achieved by the proposed pipelined FFTs and parallel-pipelined FFTs respectively, compared to the conventional pipelined FFT processor architectures.

  • In this paper, a power electronic converter which is composed of two converters - bidirectional AC/DC converter and Series Active Power Filter (SAPF), is discussed. Structural schemas and ways of operation of control systems of converters, which are used to eliminate non sinusoidal parts of the network source voltage, are presented. At the same time, the control used stabilizes the value of the voltage feeding the load. Taking in consideration the combined functions which the device executes, it may be called Unified Voltage Conditioner - UVC.

  • In general wireless power transfer systems (WPTSs), power transfer is controlled by the wireless communication between a transmitter (Tx) and a receiver (Rx). However, WPTS is difficult to apply in electronic products that do not have batteries, such as TVs. A WPTS with resonators based on a transformer of LLC series resonant converter is proposed in this study to eliminate wireless communication units between a Tx and an Rx. The proposed system operates at the boundary of the resonance frequency, and the required power can be stably supplied to authorized devices even though some misalignment occurs. Moreover, standby power standards for the electronic product can be satisfied.

  • This paper discusses a simple control approach for a Unified Power Conditioner (UPC) system to achieve power quality compensation at the point of common coupling in distribution systems. The proposed Instantaneous Power Estimation Algorithm (IPEA) for shunt and series active power filters uses a simple mathematical concept that reduces the complexity in the design of the controller. The performance of a UPC is verified with a system subjected to voltage distortions, sags/swells and unbalanced loads using MATLAB/SIMULINK. The simulation study shows that a UPC with the proposed control algorithm can effectively compensate for voltage and current harmonics, unbalance and reactive power. The control algorithm is experimentally implemented using dSPACE DS1104 and its effectiveness has been verified.

  • In this work, our goal is to develop a fast and accurate power model of the ARM926EJ-S processor in the industrial design environment. Compared with existing work on processor power modeling which focuses on the power states of processor core, our model mostly focuses on the cache power model. It gives more than 93% accuracy and 1600 times speedup compared with post-layout gate-level power estimation. We also address two practical issues in applying the processor power model to the real design environment. One is to incorporate the power model into an existing commercial instruction set simulator. The other is the re-characterization of power model parameters to cope with different gate-level netlists of the processor obtained from different design teams and different fabrication technology.
