  • A R-S-S-R three dimensional mechanism is designed for crank-rocker type through the optimization technique. The nonlinear kinematic equation of the mechanism is formulated by adopting the concept of structural error and precision points. Taking this equation as an objective function, the required mechanism is optimally synthesized by the Fletcher-Davidon-Powell's method of optimization techniques. The structural errors due to the various positions of precision points are compared, and the results from the use of two penalty functions suggested respectively by Fiacco-McCormick and by Powell are also compared on their effectiveness. The mobility of the optimally designed mechanism is checked for the possibility of its motion, and when a mechanism is optimally designed, it is strongly suggested that the mobility must be checked on the designed mechanism.

  • The current procedure to design hydraulic structures in a small basin area is to estimate the probable rainfall depth using rainfall intensity formula. The estimation of probable rainfall depth has many uncertainties inherent with it. However, it has been inevitable to simplify the nonlinearity if the rainfall in practice. This study attend to address a method which can model the nonlinearity in order to derive better rainfall intensity formula for the estimation of probable rainfall depth. The results show that genetic algorithm is more reliable and accurate than trial-and-error method or nonlinear programming technique(Powell's method) in the derivation of the rainfall intensity formula.

  • Accurate inference of parameters of a stochastic rainfall generation model is essential to improve the applicability of the rainfall generation model which modeled the rainfall process and the structure of rainfall events. In this study, the model parameters of a stochastic rainfall generation model, NSRPM (Neyman-Scott rectangular pulse model), were estimated using DFP (Davidon-Fletcher-Powell), GA (genetic algorithm), Nelder-Mead, and DE (differential evolution) methods. Summer season hourly rainfall data of 20 rainfall observation sites within the Nakdong river basin from 1973 to 2017 were used to estimate parameters and the regional applicability of inference methods were analyzed. Overall results demonstrated that DE and Nelder-Mead methods generate better results than that of DFP and GA methods.

  • We present a new technique for removing interior knots of parametric B-spline curves. An initial curve is constructed by continuous $L_{\infty}$ approximation proposed by Eck and Hadenfeld. We employ Hausdorff distance to measure the shape difference between the original curve and the initial one. The final curve is obtained by minimizing their Hausdorff distance. We demonstrate the effectiveness of our technique with experimental results on various types of planar and spatial curves.

  • This paper suggests a method for optimal power assignment of the satellite transponder input carriers in the Multi-level & Multi-bandwidth system. The interference and the noise effects analyzed for the optimal power assignment are intermodulation product caused by the nonlinear transponder characteristics, adjacent channel interference, co-channel interference, and thermal noise in the satellite link. The Fletcher- Powell algorithm is used to determine the optimal input carrier power. The performance criteria for optimal power assignment is classified into 4 categories according to the CNR of destination receiver earth station to meet the requirement for various satellite link environment. We have performed mathematical analysis of objective functions and their derivatives for use in the Fletcher-Powell algorithm, and presented various simulation results based on mathematical analysis. Since the satellite link, it is meaningful to model and analyze these effects in a unified manner and present the method for optimal power assignment of transponder input carriers.

  • A stochastic rainfall model, NSRPM (Neyman-Scott Rectangular Pulse Model), is able to reflect the cluster characteristics of rainfall events which is unable in the RPM (Rectangular Pulse Model). Therefore NSRPM has advantage in the hydrological applications. The NSRPM consists of five model parameters and the parameters are estimated using optimization techniques such as DFP (Davidon-Fletcher-Powell) method and genetic algorithm. However the DFP method is very sensitive in initial values and is easily converge to local minimum. Also genetic algorithm has disadvantage of long computation time. Nelder-Mead method has several advantages of short computation time and no need of a proper initial value. In this study, the applicability of parameter estimation methods was evaluated using rainfall data of 59 national rainfall networks from 1973-2011. Overall results demonstrated that accuracy in parameter estimation is in the order of Nelder-Mead method, genetic algorithm, and DFP method.

  • In this paper, we propose and efficient curve reconstruction method based on the classical least-square fitting scheme. Specifically, given planar sample points equipped with normals, we reconstruct the objective curve as the zero set of a hierarchical implicit ZP(Zwart-Powell)-spline that can recover large holes of dataset without loosing the fine details. As regularizers, we adopted two: a Tikhonov regularizer to reduce the singularity of the linear system and a discrete Laplacian operator to smooth out the isocurves. Benchmark tests with quantitative measurements are done and our method shows much better quality than polynomial methods. Compared with the hierarchical bi-quadratic spline for datasets with holes, our method results in compatible quality but with less than 90% computational overhead.

  • Recently, deep excavation for high-rise buildings occurs frequently to accommodate the rapidly increasing population in urban area. The stability of the earth retaining structures for deep excavation becomes more critical. The behavior of the earth retaining structures should be accurately predicted in a design stage, but the predicted behavior is different from the measured data due to uncertain soil properties and problems in construction. In this study the back-analysis using Powell's optimization theory was performed to match the measured deflection and results obtained from back-analysis were presented.
