Numerical Study on the Joints between Precast Post-Tensioned Segments

  • This paper presents a numerical procedure for analyzing the joints between precast post-tensioned segments. A computer program for the analysis of reinforced concrete structures was run for this problem. Models of material nonlinearity considered in this study include tensile, compressive and shear models for cracked concrete and a model for reinforcing steel with smeared crack. An unbonded tendon element based on the finite element method, that can describe the interaction between the tendon and concrete of prestressed concrete member, was experimentally investigated. A joint element is newly developed to predict the inelastic behavior of the joints between segmental members. The proposed numerical method for the joints between precast post-tensioned segments was verified by comparison of its results with reliable experimental results.

Dynamic Characteristic of Post-tensioned Void Slab (포스트텐션 중공슬래브의 동적 특성)

  • Post-tensioned void slab is frequently used for improving the deflection and sound proofing. Two one story 8m spanned structures were built. One structure applied post-tensioned solid slab, but the other did post-tensioned void slab. Dynamic characteristics, which is natural frequency and damping ratio, was compared between that of solid slab and void slab before and after post tension. The natural frequency of void slab was greater than that of solid slab before and after post tension. It was shown that damping ratio of solid slab and void slab was almost same at two stages.

  • A post-tensioned reinforced concrete slab bridge is analyzed by specially orthotropic laminate theory. Symmetrically reinforced slab with tension and compression steel is considered for convenience of analysis. Each longitudinal and transverse steel layer is regarded as a lamina, and material constants of each lamina is calculated by the use of the rule of mixture. This bridge is under uniformly distributed vertical loads, and axial loads and end moments due to post-tensioning. In this paper, finite difference method is used for numerical analysis of this bridge. Theory and analysis method of specially orthotropic laminate plates used in this paper can be used for design of new bridges, and maintenance and repair of old bridges.

  • A post-tensioned steel plate girder bridge with cross-beams is analyzed by specially orthotropic laminate theory. The cross-sections of both girders and cross-beams are WF types. The result is compared with that of the beam theory. This bridge with simple support is under uniformly distributed vertical load, and axial loads and moment due to post-tension. In this paper, finite difference method for numerical analysis of simple supported bridge is developed. Relatively exact solution is obtained even with small number of meshes. Theory and analysis method of specially orthotropic laminate plates used in this paper can be used in design of new bridges, and maintenance and repair of old bridges.

  • The first thing in developing precast post-tensioned concrete frame system verify the shear resistance capacity of the beam-column connection at which the transfer of member forces become discontinuous. Complying with the necessity of such experimental research, shear tests have been performed for six test specimens which were cast and cured at Dong-Ah Concrete Manufacturing Company and post-tensioning at Concrete Laboratory of Inha University. Shear key and magnitude of post-tensioned force are taken test variables. From the test results, it has been observed that the shear resistance of the specimens attained to higher values than those of theoritical calculations based on the shear friction with shear friction coefficient being 0.6.

  • In the post-tensioned concrete member, additional reinforcement is required to prevent failure in the anchorage zone. In this study, the details of reinforcement suitable for the anchorage zone of the post-tensioned concrete member using circular anchorage was proposed based on the experimental results. The tests were conducted with the compressive strength of concrete and reinforcement types as variables. The experimental results indicated that the additional reinforcement for the anchorage zone is required when the compressive strength of concrete is less than 17.5 MPa. U-shaped reinforcement shows most effective performance in terms of maximum strength and cracks patterns.

Longitudinal anti-cracking analysis for post-tensioned voided slab bridges

  • Post-tensioned concrete voided slab girders are widely used in highway bridge constructions. To obtain greater section hollow rate and reduce the self-weight, the plate thickness of slab girders are designed to be small with the adoption of flat anchorage system. Since large prestress is applied to the anchor end section, it was found that longitudinal shear cracks are easy to occur along the voided slab girder. The reason is the existence of great shearing effect at the junction area between web and bottom (top) plate in the anchor end section. This paper focuses on the longitudinal anti-cracking problem at the anchor end of post-tensioned concrete voided slab girders. Two possible models for longitudinal anticracking analysis are proposed. Differential element analysis method is adopted to derive the solving formula of the critical cracking state, and then the practical analysis method for longitudinal anti-cracking is established. The influence of some factors on the longitudinal anti-cracking ability is studied. Results show that the section dimensions (thickness of bottom, web and top plate) and prestress eccentricity on web plate are the main factors that influence the anti-cracking ability. Moreover, the proposed method is applied into three engineering examples to make longitudinal anti-cracking verification for the girders. According to the verification results, the design improvements for these girders are determined.

Analytical Study on Structural Behaviors of Post-Tensioned Column-Base Connections for Steel Modular Structures (철골 모듈러 구조물의 포스트텐션 기둥-바닥 접합부 거동에 대한 해석적 연구)

  • Modular structures are relatively lightweight compared to reinforced-concrete or steel structures. However, it is difficult to achieve structural integrity between the columns of unit modules in a modular structure, which causes undesirable effects on the lateral force resistance capacity against wind and earthquake loads. This is more prominent in modular structures whose overall heights are greater. Hence, a post-tensioned modular structural system is proposed herein to improve the lateral force resistance capacity of a typical modular structure. A post-tensioned column-base connection, which is the main component of the proposed modular structural system, is configured with shapes and characteristics that allow inducing self-centering behaviors. Finite element analysis was then performed to investigate the hysteretic behaviors of the post-tensioned column-base connection. The analysis results show that the hysteretic behaviors are significantly affected by the initial tension forces and beam-column connection details at the base.

Shear Modeling Tests for Post-Tensioned Composite Segmental Beams (세그멘탈 합성보 접합부 전단 모델 시험)

  • A precast concrete beam which is larger than the limits of domestic transportation regulation in weight, length, and volume is divided into three parts, transported separately, and erected with a composite beam by post-tensioning in site. Shear tests are performed on the post-tensioned composite segmental beam models with 1/2 scale. The jacking force and the ratio of area of shear key to beam section are major experimental variables. Nine shear strength are resulted from the tests with two variables. Rational equation for estimation of shear strength are obtained from the regression analysis on test results.

Flexural Behavior of Post-tensioned Lightweight Concrete Continuous One-Way Slabs

  • In this experimental study, six post-tensioned light weight concrete (LWC) continuous one-way slabs were tested in the following manner: the flexural behaviors of the members were compared with the calculations from the existing standards. The test also examined the effect of prestressing in tendons and proper prestress conditions to reduce the deflection and crack width, and to enhance the flexural capacity and ductility of LWC members. Flexural capacity and stress increments in unbonded tendons of the specimens were compared with those of the simply supported normal and the lightweight concrete members. The suggested safety limit from the American Concrete Institute (ACI) regulation on the maximum capacity and the stress incremental in unbonded tendons were also compared with the test results under simple and continuous supporting conditions.
