PURPOSES : In this study, noise reduction effect of a two-layer porous asphalt pavement was investigated through site measurement and computer simulation. METHODS : To examine noise reduction effect, a 3 km long quiet pavement was installed by removing previous normal pavement, which had a rather low porosity. The studied site was a high-rise apartment building surrounded by the quiet pavement and Seoul ring road with heavy traffic volume, indicating relatively high background noise. RESULTS : The measurement result before and after installing the quiet pavement showed a noise reduction effect of 4.3 dB(A) at a distance of 7.5 m from the road. After validating the accuracy of simulation using SoundPLAN, the reduction in SPL(sound pressure level) at the facades by the quiet pavement was predicted by considering five different road conditions generating traffic noise from each road or in the combination of the quiet pavement and Seoul ring road. In the case of no noise from Seoul ring road, noise reduction at the facades was 4.2 dB(A) on average for 702 housing units. With background noise from Seoul ring road, however, the average SPL decreased to 2.0 dB(A). Regarding subjective response of noise, the number of housing units with a noise reduction of over 3 dB(A) was 229 out of 706 units (approximately 32%). For 77 housing units, the noise reduction was between 1~3 dB(A), while it was less than 1 dB(A) for 400 housing units. CONCLUSIONS : The overall result indicates that the quiet pavement is useful to reduce noise evenly at low and high floors compared to noise barriers, especially in the urban situation where background noise is low.
This study evaluates the properties of porous concrete for pavement according to content of silica fume and steel fiber. The results of the test indicate that in every condition, the void ratio and the coefficient of water permeability of porous concrete for pavement satisfy both the domestic standards and proposition values. Among the properties of strength, the compressive strength satisfies the standards in the specification of KNHC as for every factor of mixture but in the case of the flexural strength, more than $0.6vol.\%$ of steel fiber satisfied the JCI proposition values. The case when silica fume and steel fiber are used simultaneously presents the strongest durability and Noise Reduction Coefficient is 0.48 to prove that it possesses almost $50\%$ sound absorption.
Recently, concrete has been made porous and used for sound absorption, water permeation, vegetation and water purification according to void characteristics. Many studies are carried out on the utilization of sewage sludge, fly ash and waste concrete to reduce the environmental load. This study was performed to evaluate the void, strength, relationship between void and strength, permeability and chemical resistance properties of porous polymer concrete for pavement with different fillers. An unsaturated polyester resin was used as a binder, crushed stone and natural sand were used as an aggregate and bottom ash, fly ash and blast furnace slag were used as fillers. The mix proportions were determined to satisfy the requirement for the permeability coefficient, $1{\times}10^{-2}$ cm/s for general permeable cement concrete pavement in Korea. The void ratios of porous polymer concrete with fillers were in the range of $18{\sim}23%$. The compressive strength and flexural load of porous polymer concrete with fillers were in the range of $19{\sim}22$ MPa and $18{\sim}24$ KN, respectively. The permeability coefficients of porous polymer concrete with fillers were in the range of $5.5{\times}10^{-1}{\sim}9.7{\times}10^{-2}$ cm/s. At the sulfuric acid resistance, the weight reduction ratios of porous polymer concrete immersed during 8-week in 5% $H_{2}SO_{4}$ were in the range of $1.08{\sim}3.56%$.
This study evaluates the physical mchanical properties, durability of porous concrete for pavement according to content of polymer and steel fiber to elicit the presentation of data and the way to enhance its function for the practical field application of porous concrete as a material of pavement. The results of the test indicate that in every condition, the void ratio and the coefficient of water permeability of porous concrete for pavement satisfy both the domestic standards and proposition values. Among the properties of strength, the compressive strength satisfies the standards in the specification of Korea National Housing Corporation as for every factor of mixture but in the case of the flexural strength, more than 0.6Vol.% of steel fiber satisfied the Japan Concrete Institute proposition values. The case when 0.6Vol.% of steel fiber and 10Wt.% of polymer are used at the same time shows that the loss rate of mass by Cantabro test became 36.7% better and freeze-thaw resistance became 33% better.
PURPOSES : Skid resistance on pavements plays an important role in reducing the risk of vehicle skidding on wet surface particularly. Almost 9.3 percent of traffic accidents were occurred under rainy condition and these are over-represented in terms of the severity of the crashes. Recently, unusual weather conditions referred widely as the intensified rainfalls justify the need of a systematic management of skid resistance. In this context, the study carried out the observational study on the skid resistance characteristics of different types of pavement with the time passage. METHODS : This study measured the skid resistance with Pavement Friction Tester at three times within five years. The skid resistance measurement has followed the method suggested by ASTM. RESULTS : As the main results under the scope of this study, skid resistance of asphalt concrete has not nearly reduced with time. On the contrary, skid resistance of cement concrete has been rapidly reduced with time though the highest resistance was gained at the early observation. Porous asphalt concrete shows a steady decrease of skid resistance with time, anyway, the reduction rate according to the increase of measurement speeds is relatively lower than the others. CONCLUSIONS : Based on our study, skid resistance of the pavement should be regarded as one of the pavement management system, so periodic measurement should be made to assure road safety as a whole.
Research on permeable pavement like asphalt and concrete pavement with porous structure has been increasing due to environmental and functional need such as reduction of run off and flood. This study was performed to evaluate void ratio, permeability coefficient, and compressive strength of permeable polymer concrete (PPC) using crushed and recycled coarse aggregate that is obtained from waste concrete. Also, 6 mm length of polypropylene fiber was used to increase toughness and interlocking between aggregate and aggregate surrounded by binder. Binder and filler used were unsaturated polyester resin and CaCO3, respectively. The mix proportions were determined to satisfy the requirement for the workability and slump according to aggregate sizes 5~10 mm. In the test results, regardless of kinds of aggregates and fiber contents, the void ratio, permeability coefficient and compressive strength of all types of PPC showed the higher than the criterion of porous concrete that is used in permeable pavement in Korea. Also, strengths of PPC with increase polypropylene fiber volume fraction showed slightly increased tendency due to increase binder with increase of fiber volume fraction. Accordingly, polypropylene fiber and recycled coarse aggregate can be used for permeable pavement.
Water retaining pavement is a pavement to lower the surface temperature by using evaporation of the water that the pavement contains when the pavement is heated by the sun in the daytime. The objective of this study is to develop water retaining materials. In this study we evaluated the practical application of a sepiolite and a charcoal as a water retaining material. We produced dense grade asphalt pavement, porous asphalt pavement, semi-rigid Pavement, semi-rigid pavement included a charcoal and semi-rigid pavement included a sepiolite, and then tested surface temperature characteristics. The test result says that water retaining pavements using a sepiolite and a charcoal lower surface temperature more than $10^{\circ}C$ compared to dense grade asphalt pavement. We confirm the practical application of a sepiolite and a charcoal as a water retaining material according to the test results.
